General Cryptor, is a major antagonist in the Ninjago franchise.
He serves as the leader of the Nindroid Army under the command of the Digital Overlord during the third season, "Rebooted." He is a ruthless and highly intelligent robotic general, Cryptor is fiercely loyal to the Overlord and plays a central role in the Nindroid plot to conquer Ninjago. He is known for his calculating nature, advanced combat skills, and disdain for the ninjas, particularly Nya and Zane, the ice ninja, whom he sees as an inferior robot and just a tin can with feelings.
He was voiced by Richard Newman.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- He attacked the Ninjas during the Invasion of New Ninjago City, showing his combat skill and efficiency by overpowering Zane and nearly blasting the power station. His motivation was simple: serve the Overlord, ensure the Nindroids' supremacy over humans, and destroy any threats from this goal getting completed.
- He is very abusive towards Min-Droid and even mocks his height on numerous occasions.
- He attacked Jay's parents' home, and he was only stopped due to Jay’s parents preparing a jet pack in case someone attacked them again.
- He showed no mercy when he mocked and terrorized the serpentine tribe, as he attampted to capture Lloyd, who was at this point with the tribe, During his attack, he nearly harmed Skales Jr and even kicked him to the ground, Showing that he won’t hesitate to also harm children.
- In the tie-in novel Who is the Phantom Ninja?, Cryptor and the Nindroids invade Nom Village under the Overlord's orders. They capture the village's mayor and his daughter, Seliel, holding them hostage to ensure the villagers' compliance. The citizens are forced to work in the factory, building more Nindroids under Cryptor's watchful eye his motivations here, is to expand the Nindroid army for the Overlord’s plan.
- Captured Nya, and threatened the ninjas with killing her if they don’t surrender.
- Near the end of the novel, after the ninja and Seliel successfully disrupt his operations, having lost control of the village and the factory, Cryptor reveals his plan to kill the mayor and Seliel (a child) as part of his revenge, and gloatingly warns the ninja of his intentions.
- In the final battle of the novel, Cryptor and his Nindroids are lured into the North Woods by Seliel and the ninja. Despite being outnumbered and ambushed, Cryptor refuses to surrender and leads his forces against the ninja in an attempt to kill them once again.
- He fought Nya twice, whom he frequently mocked during his fights with her, Despite her skill, Cryptor overpowered her with ease, almost killing her.
- He spearheaded the mission to retrieve the Golden Weapons. He orders the Nindroids to kill the Ninjas and piloted the ship with determination, but failed to kill the ninjas, but he was able to obtain the golden weapons, he then gave it to the overlord, meaning he was indirectly responsible for the rampage the overlord caused during his return.
- He then released Cyrus Borg from the Overlord's control just so he could force him to watch the entire city he built get destroyed.
- In his final confrontation with Nya, (where he again tries to kill her), he displayed not only brutality, but also arrogance, taunting her while belittling Min-Droid. His defeat came when he was frozen and shattered by Zane, marking his temporary defeat.
- In Day of The Departed after being revived by Sensei Yang he tries to kill Zane just so he can ressurect himself back into the real world. This is not played for sympathy due to his heinous crimes and has no desire to redeem himself.
- His loyalty to the Overlord is out of fanaticism and not care.
- While Ninjagos heinous standards are massive, he manages to stand out enough for NPE due to his personal cruelty with Cyrus Borg and Seliel, as there’s a whole novel that goes trough the trauma the latter suffered during Cryptor’s enslavement of her village. With Borg, he forced him to watch the Overlord wreak havoc on his city and forced him to see his city get destroyed all for kicks. Cryptor is also one one of the only villains in Ninjago to go out of his way to harm children, this is shown when he puts Seliel in slave labor, and kicked Skales Jr. while attempting to do even more harm to him. This is more then enough for him to pass the baseline for the series.
- He does not lack moral agency. Although he was made by the Overlord to be an evil clone of Zane and mainly follows the Overlords orders. But unlike other Nindroids, Cryptor has extremely high intelligence and displays multiple personality traits like arrogance, sadism and more. Tommy Andreasan even stated that he is designed to be mysteriously intelligent.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He fails the heinous standards to Vangelis. Vangelis’ resources are only slightly higher than Cryptor’s (since Vangelis is just a monarch living on the mountain with a medium-sized beast and some guards at his disposal) but Vangelis pretty much does everything Cryptor does on an even worse level. Cryptor’s slavery and threatening to kill Seliel’s father is bad but it’s pretty tame compared to Vangelis who put the Geckles and Muncee tribe through actual decades of slavery and tried to kill them all with Grief-Bringer once they escape. And while Cryptor is necessary to the Overlord’s plans and stands out more than the other Crystal Council members, Vangelis outdoes him because he’s actually more necessary to the Overlord’s plans and he supplied him the vengestone he needed to turn people into crystal zombies. As an added bonus, Vangelis also had people who knew his true nature get thrown into his pit and eaten by spiders and has threatened to kill his own daughter. So Vangelis is pretty much worse than Cryptor in a lot of ways, and the recourse gap is far to minor for him to not be able to be compared with Cryptor.
