Garrett Scholes is the main antagonist of the Black Mirror episode "Hated in the Nation".

He is a former lead Programmer at Granula and the creators of ADIs, who replaced Bees. However, Scholes was shown to be vengeful when one of his co-workers nearly killed herself due to internet hate, causing him to teach them all a lesson online.

He was portrayed by Duncan Pow.

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Spread the #DeathTo hashtag campaign, and when many people voted on the death of a woman named Jo Powers, he hacked into a ADI and made it burrow in her brain, causing pain so extreme, she killer herself by cutting her own neck.
  • When a American rapper named Tusk got the most votes on #DeathTo, he hacked another ADI and burrowed it into his head. He later was killed when a CAT scan caused the ADI to rip out of his head.
  • When Blue and Parke attempt to rescue Clara Meades, the next one on the ranking, he hacked an entire colony of ADIs to swarm the safe house, killing Clara the same way.
  • He caused the internet to spread into a panic and riot about everything, causing people to start using #DeathTo ironically and towards people they hated, such as the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Tom Pickering.
  • Tricked the NCIA and DCI to accidentally activate all the ADIs, making them all send out to murder 387,036 people who used the #DeathTo hashtag, one of these being Nick Parsons, who did it on Garret himself. It’s clear that they would have died the same way, mutilating themselves to death in order to get the pain to stop.
  • Successfully flees the country in order to escape his actions, last scene changing his appearance and fleeing a small town, although Blue is on hot pursuit to presumably catch him.
  • While he has no lines and he only appears at the end of the episode, he has enough personality due to having a clear intelligence and his extremist goal.
  • Stands out in Black Mirror for having the highest kill count in the franchise, along with the extra layer of the torture of the ADIs getting burrowed into the victims heads.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He has a genuine tragic past, having grown vengeful after his his flat age and coworker Tess attempted suicide due to cyber bullying.
  • He is a well intentioned extremist, as he wanted to teach a lesson and make the, face the consequences of their actions, and not hide behind anonymity.
  • He showed to have loved his flatmate and coworker Tess, saving her when she tried killing herself and starting his villainy in order to get revenge on what they did to her.
