“ | I want to explain myself a little. You see, we didn't want to hurt you... before. We didn't want to pull you away from your group or scare you. These aren't things we want to do. They're things we got to do. You and your people took away our home. That's fair play. Now we're out here like everybody else trying to survive. And in order to do that, we have to hunt. Didn't start that way, eating people. It evolved into that. We evolved. We had to. And now we've devolved, into hunters... I just hope you understand that nothing happening to you now is personal. Yeah, you put us in this situation and it is almost kind of a cosmic justice for it to be you, but... we would have done this to anybody. We will. But at the end of the day, no matter how much we hate all this ugly business... A man's got to eat. If it makes you feel any better... You taste much better than we thought you would. | „ |
~ Gareth to Bob while eating his leg in front of him. |
Gareth is a major antagonist from the AMC series The Walking Dead, serving as the secondary antagonist of the second half of Season 4 and one of two main antagonists of the first half of Season 5 (alognside Dawn).
He is the leader of a group of cannibals called "The Hunters" who reside at Terminus, a community of people who falsely claim to be open to new residents, but who are actually cannibals in disguise that lure in survivors to trap and kill them for food.
He was portrayed by Andrew J. West.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- He lured, murdered, and ate dozens of people by pretending to be a benevolent person, only to reveal his true colors and have them locked in train cars before slitting their throats then eating their corpses. Sometimes, the victims would also get bludgeoned to death with bats.
- It's implied that Gareth also had his crew kill and cannibalize children too, as teddy bears and kids toys could be seen amongst the inventory of everyone Gareth and his team killed.
- When his brother Alex died, his body is shown being prepared to be butchered and eaten and revealing that he and his group would eat their own people if they died.
- He locked Rick's group in train cars and planned on killing and eating them.
- He sadistically ate Bob’s leg right in front of him while falsely claiming that it wasn’t personal and took pleasure in tormenting him. He also revealed to Bob that he enjoyed eating people.
- He planned on hunting down and eating all of Rick’s group (possibly including Rick’s infant daughter Judith).
- In his last moments, he tried to convince Rick's group into sparing them despite everything he and his group did to them.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He has a tragic backstory, as he genuinely wanted to help people by turning Terminus into a place of salvation. However, a group of bandits attacked their compound, killing several of his friends then locking Gareth and the rest of his people in train cars, where the bandits starved them for weeks and frequently raped the group's women, Gareth's mother included. To make matters worse, the leader of the group punched Gareth in the face for trying to comfort his mother after they raped her. Eventually, him and his people were able to fight back and regain control of the compound, but these events led to Gareth prioritizing his and his group's well-beings above anyone else, including killing and eating anyone who wasn't with them.
- He has some honor, as he alongside the rest of Terminus, do not commit rape, being disgusted by it. Also, as twisted as it is, he also does at least present people the option to either join them, or become food.
- As previously mentioned, he genuinely loved his mother and was protective of her. He even wanted to get revenge on Carol for killing her (even though he was also at fault for her death, albeit indirectly).
- He cared for his group’s well-being and was very respectful towards them.
Trivia[]
- Both he and his comic counterpart are approved NPE.
- However, his comic self is arguably more heinous due to lacking the tragedy that his TV version experienced. Plus, it's unclear if his comic counterpart cares for his fellow cannibals to the same degree.
