Galbatorix is the main antagonist of The Inheritance Cycle. He is a former Dragon Rider who became the king of Alagaësia through sheer brute force.

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- He proves even before the story how much he doesn't care about his allies (for example the Violators of oath) and that everything for him is just pragmatic.
Background[]
- He tried to kill some Urgals with his dragon, which is what got the dragon killed.
- Killed a rider who helped him in stealing an dragon egg, a few years before the downing of the riders.
- Betrayed the Dragon Riders when they refused to gave him another dragon, corrupt 13 Violators of oath and beside them, he kill all the riders, their dragons and their leader, Vrael. He also stole from them the dragons' hearts. According to Oromis he also personally hunted down and killed his teachers.
- By means of conquest, he became a king and caused all the Dwarves and the Elves to hide from him while trying as much as possible to eliminate the Varden who rebelled against him. He also murdered so many dragons that they were believed to be extinct.
- Forced dead dragons to fight for him by using their hearts.
- He forced a wild dragon named Shruikan to become his companion, disrupting his mind.
- He cares little for his citizens and raises their taxes. Also he restores the slave traders to be legal.
- He executed people who told the truth about Alageiza and made sure to maintain a lie that he was protecting the kingdom from the Varden's so-called disturbing of the peace.
- Gave permission to evil creatures like Ra'zac (or Lethrblaka) or Shades to abuse his citizens to his purposes.
Eragon, Eldest, and Brisingr[]
- By Durza - a shade creature and his men he tried to discover the location of a dragon egg that was stolen and tortured people who been in its way, include a woman elf that nearly to killed.
- Built an Urgals army to destroy his rebels - The Varden and the Dwarfs whole.
- When he got Murtagh as captive of his spies he discovers his true name, bends him to his will as well as the dragon hatched for him. It also seems to increase the dimensions of the young dragon stings in an illogical way that is explained to harm the dragon's soul.
- He sends an army with Murtagh and his dragon to fight his former allies for destroyed the little country Surda, because they help to his rebels.
- Raised an army of laughing halflings sent to strike down the Warden warriors, who did not understand their power and during this time makes sure that Eragon is busy fighting against Murtagh to taking him captive.
- When Oromis and his big Dragon come to fight on Gil'ead he take control on Murtagh's mind to use him for killing them.
Inheritance[]
- Taken as captured Nasuada, the leader of the Varden for convince her to turn against her people for his sake and when she refused he abused her physically and mentally.
- After he find the Name of Names he manipulating all the magic powers to work as he wishes, destroying his opponents' weapons and their ability against him.
- Using two children from his town as hostages for Aragon and his allies to surrender to him.
- Tried to force his enemies to kneel before him. when Eragon refused he fight on him physical and mental.
- Conducts a mental duel with Eragon in which it turns out that this gives him terrible sexual pleasure.
- While one could argue he felt some regret on his crimes before his death, this is caused by Eragon and the dragons' magic, so it doesn't count.
- There is no indication he sincerely cares for Murtagh; listening to him and forsaking his betrayal is presumably out of pragmatism, and either way, he eventually attempted to fight and kill him.
- He commits suicide by a large dangerous explosion, killing his enemies in the process.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He has tragedy of losing his first dragon and becoming insane due to his unstable mental state, which made him rebel against the Riders. However, he was cruel even then, so it's only a minor prevention.
- He cared about his first dragon and likely Shruikan, the last dragon, as he was shocked by his death.
Trivia[]
- Unlike his novel counterpart, his film counterpart doesn't count as NPE due to lacking a tragic background, characterization and a clear motive.
