It's the endgame that matters. Ruling the world don't mean shit if you lose it the next day
~ Shimano, explaining to Majima his pragmatic approach to rule the Tojo, after killing the Omi member to avoid being executed for betrayal

Futoshi Shimano is a major antagonist in the Yakuza Saga of the Like a Dragon (Ryū ga Gotoku, formerly known as Yakuza in the west) franchise.

He is one of the two secondary antagonists of Yakuza and its remake Yakuza Kiwami (alongside Goro Majima), a major antagonist in the prequel, Yakuza 0 (specifically being one of the overarching antagonists of Majima's Scenario), and a minor antagonist in Yakuza 2 (and its remake Yakuza Kiwami 2).

He's a former lieutenant of the Dojima Family, before starting his own family, the Shimano Family. Ambitious and ruthless, Shimano seeks to take control of the entire Tojo Clan, by becoming its chairman. He's also the former boss of Goro Majima.

He was voiced by Naomi Kusumi in the Japanese Dub. In the English dub of the the first game, he was voiced by Michael Madsen, who also played Victor Vega in Reservoir Dogs.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

Past[]

  • Along with Shintaro Kazama, he takes part in the Jingweon Massacre, ordered by Sohei Dojima, resulting in the deaths of 33 people. Unlike Kazama, who participated with reluctance and even spared some members like Daejim Kim and Yeongmin Ji, Shimano takes sadistic glee during his killing spree.
  • After Goro Majima defied Kazuo Shibata's orders, Shimano takes him imprisoned in the Hole, where he has Majima repeatedly tortured for a year. He later enslaves him to his oath brother, Sagawa, who forces him to manage the Grand Cabaret Club and gain money for them.

Yakuza 0[]

  • Plans to have control of the Empty Lot, and sell it to the Omi Alliance, to become chairman of the Tojo Clan, proving he doesn't have any loyalty towards the Tojo.
  • Sends Majima to kill Makoto Makimura, the owner of the Empty Lot. Although he secretly wanted to keep Makoto alive and correctly predicted that Majima would have spared Makoto, this is only for pragmatic reasons, as it's would have been much easier for him to take control of the Lot, by having Makoto willingly sold to him, after forming a bond with Majima. He also kept Sagawa in the dark about his plan, and isn't particularly upset of Sagawa's actions, which almost killed Makoto and caused the death of her caretaker, Wen Hai Lee.
  • After his betrayal is discovered, he kills the Omi high-ranking member who was in negotiations with him, to cover his tracks and playing the long game. It's also heavily implied that he framed Sagawa for it, resulting in his death.
  • Although he calls Majima a son and allows him to rejoin the Shimano Family, this seems more for his one-man army and living weapon skills, rather than genuine care.

Yakuza/Yakuza Kiwami[]

  • When his underlings fails to collect from the Stardust Club, after being defeated by Kiryu, he brutally chops two fingers of one of his man. He also says that he was merciful because he was in a good mood.
  • Has Haruka Sawamura, a child, kidnapped by Triad boss Lau Ka Long, to force her mother to give up the 10 millions stolen from the Tojo Clan.
  • Sends Majima to Shangri-La, to kidnap Haruka again, resulting in the Shangri-La's destruction.
  • After following Terada, Shimano-co conspirator and secret ally of Kazama, who was meeting with Kiryu and Kazama, in their hideout, he has his men assault their yacht. He later orders to throw grenades at them, despite his men were still on board.
  • After being defeated, before being shot to death by Terada, he throws a grenade at Haruka out of spite, forcing Kazama to sacrifice his life to protect her.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Despite how brutal he is, he has trouble in passing the heinous standards of the series, as the Jingweon Massacre was under Dojima's orders, and in Yakuza 0, he's a lot less violent than Dojima, who directly tries to kill Makoto, while Shimano is more pragmatic, and holds back his resources. Even his worst action, Majima's torture, is not enough, especially compared to Homare Nishitani III, who enforces even more brutal tortures to his slaves, and is also a sexual deviant.
