Near Pure Evil Wiki
NOTE: This article is a composite of the human Frederick Gideon and the demon that possessed him, as in stark contrast to Eden Hawkins and Lucas Caravaggio, these two evildoers merged into a gestalt entity, sharing identities, ideas, and plans.

I've opened a gateway between the two worlds. A portal to the beyond that mere mortals cannot comprehend. While my fate is likely sealed, I implore you, find this place, and let the staggering power of the other realm wash over this flawed world.
~ Frederick Gideon

Frederick Gideon is one of two main antagonists (alongside Dodge) of the TV series Locke and Key, serving as the unseen overarching antagonist of its first season, the overarching antagonist of its second season and the main antagonist in the third and final season.

He was once a British Captain active during the Revolutionary War and the first to discover the dimension behind the Black Door, at which point an astral entity conjoined with him, and the new conjoined organism was subsequently hanged by the law enforcers of Massachusetts Bay Colony, but not before leaving a message of cosmic ramifications for his descendants to find. In the modern day, he was revived by Eden Hawkins, who he promptly killed before proceeding on a malevolent crusade to destroy the world of men and fuse it with the mysterious world behind the Black Door so he could have more power. In the end, the Lockes gave him his comeuppance, destroying and separating the demon and throwing the now empty meat organism into his own portal of doom.

He was portrayed by Kevin Durand.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

In General[]

  • He believes that the meaning of life is to make people suffer.
  • While his loyalty to Britain was once genuine, he never attempts to return there upon his resurrection, instead seeking to destroy everything, Britain included. While he sees his actions as harsh justice for the other world, that just amounts to "might makes right".
  • While he does have comedic moments, he is still a dangerous adversary and the Lockes take him seriously. Also, before becoming a gestalt entity, he had no comedic moments at all.
  • Given that Sam Lesser has a Freudian Excuse which Gideon lacks, Dodge wants to forcibly reorder humanity according to her own questionable judgment rather than burn it to its core as Gideon wants, and Eden Hawkins is more chaotic neutral than anything else as Gideon is malignant rather than neutral, he is far worse than they are.
  • Despite the series high heinous standard, he easily stands out as its settler, as he has committed countless atrocities while alive and is driven by his sadistic list for destruction and as well as his cold-blooded murder of Peter Locke. His actions still leave a big impact and as well as his desire to destroy the world is something not even Dodge and Sam Lesser sought to do, with the former being disgusted by such cruelty herself.

Background[]

  • In Colonial Times, his main job was to enforce the laws of King George III throughout the Revolutionary War, which he did mercilessly and malevolently. According to Josh Bennett, he terrorized the Northern Shore for years and ruthlessly slaughtered several innocent people he suspected may or may not be rising in opposition against the king.
    • He conducted an investigation on Peter Locke's house due to suspecting he is arming terrorists and keeping contraband items, which initially seemed acceptable until he viciously beat him down and let his soldiers help themselves to Peter's possessions. Then he tried to kill Peter's wife and his underage daughter Miranda via fire just because they were there. When Peter tries to defend them, Gideon stabbed him in the heart, sadistically citing that his death would mean nothing.
  • He allowed a shadow demon to manifest as an orange bullet and possess him. This does nothing to reduce his free will and he retains control of his own actions, fusing so both beings become rendered as one, and it was his decision to become possessed in his pursuit of power and be turned more evil and monstrous still, while it was the demon's decision to enrich Frederick's malice and conjoin with such an obviously evil man.
  • He seeks to mash the keys together and open an evil portal of doom to obliterate Earth in order to gain more power for himself.

Seasons 1 and 2[]

  • Because he opened the portal to the other world, basically most if not all of the negative events of both seasons can be tied right back to him.
  • Upon resurfacing, he drops Eden Hawkins into the core of the Wellhouse. Her cold-blooded murder is even more twisted considering he was in her debt.

Season 3[]

  • He sends the Wheeler twins to harass the Lockes.
  • He scalps the desk clerk and steals weapons from the library.
  • He threatens Dodge into helping him and implies he will kill her otherwise, even though she is possessing a 12-year-old, proving Frederick Gideon would hurt children.
  • He fatally impales Gordie. Made worse is that Gordie has done absolutely nothing to him.
  • He traps Sam Lesser in Gordie's head, resulting in him perishing a second time.
  • He slits a police officer's throat.
  • He steals Josh Bennett's car and ultimately gets it blown up.
  • He destroys the Wellhouse.
  • He tries to push Kinsey into his portal of doom.
  • His actions lead to the Lockes somberly discarding all of the magical keys, leaving them to live completely mundane lives with absolutely no ties to magic in the future.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He clearly has one standard: he is benevolent to his followers, never once mistreating any of them, and they care for him in return. He even freaks out when Howe is about to become consumed by the other world, and is also very protective of Coffey and Bolton.

Trivia[]

  • He is the only villain from the Locke & Key franchise to be Near Pure Evil.
