“ | I reject myself! I will eradicate the disease called Quirks from this world... and then, I will save the pure humans from destruction! | „ |
~ Flect Turn |
Flect Turn is a major antagonist in the anime series My Hero Academia, serving as the overarching antagonist of the anime exclusive episode “Long Time No See, Selkie” and the main antagonist of the 2021 film My Hero Academia: Worlds Heroes' Mission.
He is the leader of the terrorist cult group Humarise and Rody Soul's archenemy, who claims to want to prevent the Quirk Doomsday Theory, but actually seeks to kill off all the Pro Heroes and the majority of Quirk users in the world with bombs to collapse society.
He was voiced by Kazuya Nakai in the Japanese version and Robbie Daymond in the English dub.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- He created the terrorist cult known as Humarise with the goal of eradicating all Quirk users other than himself and his followers.
- He had several scientists kidnapped and forced them to assist in making Trigger Bombs by threatening to murder their families, children included. One of the victims was Eddy Soul, who was murdered after he made a key to deactivate the bombs.
- This would lead to Rody and his younger siblings being forced out of their home and living in poverty while being mistreated by others who believed their father willingly joined Humarise, leading to Rody gaining a deep hatred for his father.
- He unleashes one of the Trigger Bombs in a city, which causes the population's Quirks to go out of control and kill thousands of innocent people. What's more, from what was seen, the Quirkless people in the city were heavily traumatized by these deaths (though Humarise was utterly indifferent to this), and several of them are explicitly shown being killed when a female Quirk user loses control of her Quirk and implicitly killed when parts of a building drop onto their cars.
- When one of the scientists flees with information about Humarise, he sends Beros to eliminate him, which leads to the scientist being severely wounded by her. Then, when Deku and Rody retrieve the case, he manipulates the chief of police in Otheon, blaming Deku and Rody for the unsolved murders of twelve people.
- He publicly announces his intention to detonate the bombs and kill all Quirk users, causing widespread panic across the world.
- This is eventually shown to be a ruse when the heroes discover his true goal is actually to lure the heroes to the 25 cities with the Trigger bombs and kill them with the bombs, thus dismantling hero society and allowing Humarise to take over and kill all Quirk users in order to create a new world where only Quirkless people are allowed to live.
- When Deku arrives to try and stop the Trigger Bombs, Flect Turn berates him as "diseased" before attempting to kill him, blasting him many times with lasers.
- Though he is initially amicable with Rody when he attempts to give him the key to deactivate the bombs, when Rody reveals his deception, he becomes enraged and attempts to kill him with his laser system, seriously wounding him in the process.
- Despite claiming to be saving mankind from Quirks based on the Quirk Doomsday Theory, he has no problem enlisting Quirk users into Humarise and offering them protection from mass genocide in exchange for serving him, demonstrating his hypocrisy. Additionally, even when claiming he "loved" humanity, Flect was also willing to blackmail human scientists through force and have their families killed (regardless of whether they were Quirkless or had a Quirk), not to mention that he was willing to let Quirkless people be victims of his bombing attack. If Flect truly wanted to help humanity, he would’ve found ways to support other Quirk users that suffer problems similar to his rather than resorting to genocide, especially with the theory having little scientific proof. All in all, Flect's just looking for an excuse to push his own misery onto others and stroke his own ego as "humanity's savior".
- He never demonstrates any care or respect for the members of Humarise, as seen when he casually dismisses Beros' suicide and refers to her as "expendable".
- Furthermore, minions like Sidero are shown as completely willing to betray Humarise. Bakugo correctly guesses that the Serpenter twins are not genuinely loyal to Humarise but only follow the group out of cowardice to avoid falling victim to the Quirk genocide, further showing the lack of connection between Flect and his minions.
- Overall, Flect Turn stands out as one of the most heinous villains in the entire franchise, even surpassing Overhaul and nearly every other villain in terms of sheer evil due to the thousands of people he killed with his Trigger Bombs and his intention to eradicate all Quirk users in the world, which amounts to approximately 80% of the global population. While Overhaul also intended to commit genocide, it was only a cultural kind, and his plan wouldn't have killed nearly as many people as Flect Turn's would have.
- What's even worse is that by forcing Quirk users to go out of control and destroy everything and everyone around them, he is intentionally creating the very apocalypse that he is supposedly trying to stop.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He has a tragic past where he was never able to touch or hug his parents or friends due to his Quirk and ended up being abandoned by them as a result, pushing him to nearly commit suicide. As a matter of fact, his hatred of his own Quirk is the sole reason why he wanted to kill almost all Quirk users in the world.
- While it's true that his past does hold up, it doesn't hold up too much for reasons Midoriya points out. Flect didn't bother trying to actually control his quirk to connect with others and is just seeking to destroy society in order to push his misery onto others and stroke his own ego as the self-proclaimed "savior of humanity." This is all furthered down when he refuses to accept Deku's words or any responsibility for his decisions and actions, merely screaming at him to shut up and trying to beat him to death with his own fists.
- He has genuine care for his loved ones as he reached out to them when they walked away and was obviously distraught when he was all alone, showing he never lied about caring for people nor did he subvert this in any way.
