Hurts, don't it? That's your blood freezing in your veins. Now you see what keeps everyone in my ship in line. The chains, well, they're really just for show.
~ Finnegrin after using Veinus Frigardis on Rayla, revealing that he used it on his crew as well so they would remain subservient to him.

Finnegrin is a supporting antagonist in the Netflix animated fantasy series The Dragon Prince.

He was the pirate lord of Scumport, and the captain of Sea Legs, who wanted to force Callum to do dark magic for him in order to kill Domina Profundis and rule over the oceans. He was killed by Elmer after he had enough of his abuse.

He was voiced by Tariq Leslie.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • For presumably 40 years, he used his pet crab Shelley to kill sea leviathans and krakens for valuables, which provoked the archdragon of the ocean Domina Profundis.
  • He challenged Domina to take over the ocean. This led to Shelley's death and Finnegrin developing a long-lasting grudge against her, even though it was his own decision to challenge Domina that led to the crab's death.
  • At some point in his life, he took over the town "Scumport", allowing people to commit criminal activities.
  • Emotionally abused his body guard and champion, Elmer, nicknaming him Deadwood, threatening to cut him in pieces if he failed to do what he asked, and admitting to Soren that he doesn't care one bit about him and says that he has a face only a carpenter could love.
  • He was known for tossing his coin to decide the fate of his enemies after capturing them, where he would either drown them or make them wish he did it.
  • He tortured his crew into submission by freezing the blood in their veins.
  • When a Sunfire Elf named Darys challanged him to a duel, he had Elmer beat him to a pulp.
    • While he does nod at Elmer to release Darys after the latter forfeited, it was only because he had no reason to kill him, as he already humiliated him in front of an audience.
  • He planned on using Bait to lure sea leviathan, and even after Ezran made it clear that he didn't want to sell Bait, Finnegrin still offered to allow Ezran to have half of Bait, but he would choose which half.
    • He was also planning to use infant glow toads to do the same, which made Ezran make a plan to enter in Finnegrin's office and steal them from him, as Ezran wanted to free them and stop them from being killed by Finnegrin's greed.
  • When Soren told Finnegrin that he had valuable items on his ship while faking being a businessman, Finnegrin threatened to kill him if he was wasting his time.
  • After capturing Team Zym and their friends, Finnegrin seperated Callum from them so he could talk with him. There, he asked him to make a dark magic spell, and when he refused, Finnegrin had Elmer torture Callum with sea anemones.
  • He planned on killing Domina Profundis with the same dark magic spell Viren used to kill Avizandum so he could take over the ocean.
  • He threatened to cut off the hands of Callum's friends if he didn't make a dark magic spell for him.
  • He tortured Rayla by freezing the blood in their veigns when she tried to attack him, before taunting her and Callum by saying that he used the same spell to make his crew serve him, commenting that the chains he uses on them were "really just for show".
  • He tried to have Rayla fed to a sea leviathan out of spite against Callum after the latter punched him, and refused to change his mind even when Callum told him how to make a dark magic spell capable of killing Domina Profundis.
  • He tried to freeze Callum's blood after he freed himself and saved Rayla, although it failed due to Callum learning the Ocean Arcanum.
  • After failing to use Veinus Frigardis, he tried to have Elmer choke Callum to death.
  • When Soren tried to convince Elmer to change and stand up to Finnegrin, he had Elmer beat him up.
  • When Elmer stood up against him, he stabbed his hand multiple times and demanded Elmer to release him by saying that he owned him.
  • Even after his death, Finnegrin's actions still have impact on Callum, as he was forced to use dark magic to save Rayla, which lead to him developing PTSD over the events that happened in the ship.
  • While he did free Nyx after she told him that Team Zym was looking for a treasure in the Sea of the Castout, this happens offscreen and the details around it are unknown, and he uses freeing Nyx to mock Callum by saying that his friends wouldn't come to save him, as he knew that Callum saw his friends as his greatest strength, and released Nyx to taunt him.
  • Despite the high heinous standards of the Dragon Prince, Finnegrin still stands out by having far lower resources than most of the show's villains, his unique torture methods, and personal villainy.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He is shown to have fondness towards his pet crabs, most notably his late ship Shelley, saying he loved her and part of the reason he wants to kill Domina Profundis is to avenge her death. Although, given his extremely greedy nature and exploiting everyone around him for his personal use, his main reason for wanting to kill Domina being power and his wounded ego, and the fact that Callum shows no sympathy for him even after Finnegrin told him about Shelley's death, makes it a minor prevention. Not to mention that it was his decision to attack Domina that led to the crab being killed in the first place, something he doesn't acknowledge while explaining his motives to Callum.
