This seems like a good time for a drink and a cold, calculated speech with sinister overtones. A speech about politics. About order. Brotherhood. Power. But speeches are for campaigning. Now, is the time for action.
~ Evil Morty after having the Shadow Council of Ricks killed.
Disapprove all you want! Tonight, the quality of dialogue stops mattering. Tonight, I do that thing I wanna do, with the Curve thing!
~ Evil Morty before initiating his destruction of the Central Finite Curve.
Every version of us has spent every version of all of our lives in one infinite crib built around an infinite f***ing baby. And I'm leaving it. That's what makes me "evil" - being sick of him.
~ Evil Morty explaining his hatred of Ricks.

Morty Smith of Dimension 79⊢⊇V, better known by his nickname Evil Morty, is the main antagonist of the Adult Swim science-fiction animated series Rick and Morty. He is an alternate version and the archenemy of Morty Smith who has grown to despise the several versions of his grandfather Rick Sanchez. After weaseling his way to the top of the Citadel of Ricks, he orchestrated a master plan to escape the Central Finite Curve in which every Rick-dominated universe exists and finally be free of his grandfather's influence.

He was voiced by the series' co-creator Justin Roiland until season 7, who also voiced formerly Rick Prime in the same series and the Earl of Lemongrab in Adventure Time. From season 7 onwards, he is voiced by Harry Belden.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Unlike most Mortys who are kind-hearted and empathetic, even the ones who experienced the same tragedies as him, Evil Morty is a complete and utter psychopath with care for nobody but himself who has no legitimate redeeming qualities:
    • Despite despising Ricks for their horrible treatment and abuse towards Mortys, he is not an extremist or anti-villain but rather a hypocrite as like the other Ricks he hates, he is fully willing to harm other Mortys for his own benefit. When he obtains the power and resources to end the corruption after becoming president, he doesn’t as his goal is self-admittedly just to bail on the citadel because he doesn't care, almost making his tragedy completely invalid.
    • While he does team up with Rick C-137 and Morty Prime to defeat Rick Prime (whose arguably even more evil than him), this is purely pragmatic on his part and despite no longer having hostility towards the duo as well as deciding not to use the Omega Device to the infinite versions of Rick and Morty, this is out of not wanting to create enemies or having vengeful Beths or Summers come after him.
    • While he did allow Rick to get his revenge on Rick Prime for no pragmatic reasons, this was likely not out of honor but wanting Rick to understand the emptiness of finally fulfilling his revenge.
  • He has killed thousands to millions of versions of himself and his grandfather Rick Sanchez. While it's safe to say that many of them deserve it, those Ricks likely have genuine loved ones and family members (like alternate versions of Beth and Summer Smith or even their Morty companions) that have now had their friend/relative cruelly taken from them.
  • It's implied that he was behind the events of the Wormageddon ARG, since the Citadel was the original home for the egg containing the worms.
  • Although his kill count is less than that of Rick C-137 and Rick Prime, he had less resources than them at least initially due to "being a Morty" with no powerful gadgets at his disposal, while also standing out for his brutal torture of hundreds to thousands of Morties.
  • Even though he has a few comedic moments, such as stating the quality of dialogue will stop mattering and trying to trick Morty Prime into sitting on a toilet, they are too brief to be detracting and he is mostly taken seriously in each of his appearances.
  • Even before becoming evil, it is implied he already had a cynical personality, as he had satanic posters in his room.
  • He intoxicated and brainwashed his own grandfather when he was drunken, turning him into a puppet that he could control, which is made worse by the fact that he had some awareness of his actions and would become suicidal to the point he would later beg other Mortys to kill him so he can escape death.
  • He broke into the Morty Agency and had his Rick shoot the Fat Rick shopkeeper and an approaching security guard Rick so he could break in and erase his record in the Morty Directory to remain anonymous and commit his atrocities undercover and then used his Rick to go on a killing spree across the multiverse, shooting at least 27 Ricks dead in front of their families and kidnapping hundreds of Mortys, which he would then strap to a large machine where they were placed in constant agony (despite Ricks claims that only five are necessary) while other Mortys were held as prisoners.
    • Furthermore, he framed every murder on C-137 by hacking into his portal gun in order to lure him to his base, causing him to be hunted by Riq IV and the other Council Members.
  • Upon capturing Rick, he scanned his brain in order to gain information about the Central Finite Curve and how to destroy it. Although he only gets halfway the first time before being interrupted by the freed Mortys killing Evil Rick, he eventually completes the scan when he meets them again.
  • After sneaking onto the Citadel, he ran for president and used his charisma to gain the public's approval. After succeeding in the presidential debate, he fired Campaign Manager Morty for his lack of faith in him, leading to the Morty attempting to assassinate him after discovering his true colors. This attempt not only failed, but backfired due to giving Evil Morty a sympathy vote from the public and allowing him to win by a landslide, while Campaign Manager Morty was executed via jettison into space, presumably under Evil Morty's orders.
  • He ruled the Citadel as a dictator, executing multiple of its inhabitants shortly after being elected. This included, but was not limited to, members of the Shadow Council of Ricks who didn't support his reign.
    • This included, but was not limited to, members of the Shadow Council of Ricks who didn't support his reign. This is a rather minor crime however since the Council's members clearly deserved it for their horrid actions.
    • He had several deformed Mortys work in mines as slaves, and he used all the clones from Operation Phoenix as fuel for the machine that would break through the Central Finite Curve.
  • He had violently killed almost everyone in the Citadel as part of his plan to break through the Central Finite Curve, even having individuals who tried to escape using Project Phoenix get blended alive. He likely ended up killing everyone except Rick C-137 and Morty Prime as the Citadel is later shown to be a barren ghost-town.
  • He quickly shot another Rick who was begging for his life in Rick Prime's death games with no hesitation (although it did turn out he was feigning for sympathy, it is still insensitive on his part.)
  • He stole Rick Prime's Omega Device and threatens to use it to kill infinite versions of them if Rick and Morty come after him.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He has a genuine tragic backstory, as his main objective was to escape the Central Finite Curve and get away from Rick, which is very understandable given how Ricks went out of their way to manufacture Mortys and use them as human shields or cloaking devices to avoid having their unique brainwaves detected by other groups or villains. In his past, it was seen that he would be raised by a neglectful Rick who abused him and forced him to go on adventures, then saw what is presumably his own death via holding death crystals. With everything he has experienced, his victory is played for some sympathy, as he managed to successfully escape Rick's influence and is at peace in his own world knowing he doesn't have to be chained down by Rick anymore.

Trivia[]

  • Although Evil Morty's character arc has seemingly finished, his status may change if he returns in the future. After helping Rick and Morty defeat Rick Prime and no longer having any hostility towards them, it is possible he could begin to show redeeming qualities.
