“ | I don't understand the feelings of the weak. The law of the world is survival of the fittest. It's how the weak are weeded out. It just means those people that died were too weak. It's only natural for the weak to perish. | „ |
~ Esdeath's most famous quote. |
General Esdeath (in Japanese: エスデス, Esudesu) is one of two main antagonists (alongside Prime Minister Honest) of the manga Akame Ga Kill!, and the 2014 anime adaptation of the same name.
She is a high-ranking general of the Empire, one of the most powerful Teigu users in the world and the leader of the Jaegers. She also serves as the biggest physical threat of the series.
Esdeath was responsible for the deaths of millions of people in the north of the country and several other conflicts and war on account of the rebellion against the Empire. She has committed the second largest number of horrible atrocities of any member of the Empire, behind Prime Minister Honest himself. she is also the archenemy of Akame, Tatsumi (whom Esdeath is madly obsessive of), and Najenda.
She was voiced in Japanese by Satomi Akesaka, and by Christine Auten in the English dub.
Her Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- Although Esdeath grew up as the sole survivor of her village, she went far past this tragedy by committing numerous atrocities.
- Even as a kid, she already showed signs of being evil when targeting smaller animals and carving them. During her years in the capital before becoming the general, she attempted to kill Merraid Oarburgh, who was a child at that time. However, out of Esdeath's most cruel acts of killing, this one is probably her most justified since Merraid tried to rape and molest her, even if it was out of self-defense, she wasn't afraid to use much lethal force at her before the latter escaped.
- After becoming general from climbing the highest of the rankings within the Empire and drinking the Teigu Demon's extract, she began committing atrocities as much as she pleases.
- She recruited Liver and his men to become part of her army as the Three Beast Bodyguards during their arrest.
- After conquering the Ban Tribe, she ruthlessly orders her army to pillage their villages while murdering their people, beating them up, and even overseeing some of her man raping people during the massacre. It gets worse when she forced the three leaders of that tribe to watch in horror.
- She had murdered and buried 400,000 lives only using her special attacks from her Teigu Arms.
- Massacred Najenda’s small army of rebels and destroyed Najenda’s arm and eye.
- Tortured and enslaved Prince Numa to break his pride after she massacred all of the Northern tribes' people, only to mock him and kill the latter in one kick.
- At one point in the Manga, when entering the torture chamber, she uses her ice powers on a boiling pot to make the victims on there suffer a slower and more painful death.
- Formed the Jaegers, including Seryu Ubiquitous, the one who murdered Sheele, in hopes to accomplish killing Night Raid.
- When Tatsumi won the fighting tournament, Esdeath chains him up, knocks him out when he tries to resist, and forces him to spend the night with her. Its implied she raped him.
- Although she does it to express her love for him, she frequently would sexually harasses Tatsumi by kissing him and hugging him in between her breasts against his will.
- She punished Wave for letting "Incursio" escape during his encounter with him, though not knowing it was Tatsumi by crushing his legs and in the manga, having Kurome hold a candle to his neck.
- When looking at a certain type of flower, she mentions to Run about its toxicity to wounds, suggesting that she planned to use this as a method of light torture.
- Killed Susanoo during their fight by destroying his core.
- In the manga, cuts one of Leone's breasts just to see if her regenerative abilities are true.
- Reluctantly tries to execute Tatsumi after he stubbornly refuses to join her when she genuinely tries to save him but willingly had no choice.
- In the manga, she created a massive snowstorm that killed almost everyone within the Capitol's nation (including her minions/allies) when she was surrounded during her fight with Akame.
- While she has some humorous moments, specifically her over-the-top ways of expressing her love to Tatsumi, and insulting Prime Minister Honest's gluttonous nature, they are rather brief and have nothing to do with her worst crimes and her reputation as a powerful threat, which are treated with pure horror.
- Overall, Esdeath is the most heinous and destructive villain in the Akame Ga Kill! franchise and she has the highest kill count of any villain in the franchise.
What Prevents Her from Being Pure Evil?[]
- She at least holds some care for her team members in the Jaegers:
- She unmasked Bols to give him more confidence and encouraged him to eat with the others from that one night.
- Comforted Seryu with genuine care when she was still mourning for Captain Ogre.
- However, in the manga she subverts this care when she makes a winter storm in the final battle which endangers her minions as well and shows no regret. She also coldly remarks on Seryu's death as a waste of potential. As such, this redeeming quality only holds up in the anime.
- Her most pivotal prevention trait is that she is genuinely in love with Tatsumi and cared for him no matter how twisted it was. Despite having a perverted lust for him stealing his first kiss and wanting something more, she still genuinely loves him. Even though she did try to kill him willingly, she was reluctant but had no choice as she willed herself enough. In the end, she understands Tatsumi will never love her, but she'll always have a place for him in her heart (showing that she is genuinely insecure). However, the relationship between them is still toxic, as Esdeath chained him and openly said he would change for her sake.
- Even after Tatsumi's death in the anime, she still called him out for being weak but soon dismisses it when she begins mourning for him. In the end, she is last seen hugging Tatsumi's corpse before freezing herself and with him to die together. Although her death in both the Manga and Anime versions alike differ in comparison, in the manga she died alone while in the anime played further in a sympathetic tone.
- She has a sense of affability and honor to her subordinates and her opponents. A notable example is when she fought Susanoo as a warrior in her eyes instead of looking at him like he was a tool.
Trivia[]
- She, alongside Enshin, Merraid Oarburgh, Cosmina and Bach, are the only five Akame Ga Kill! villains to be Near Pure Evil. Apart from them, she was known for having a higher body count of millions of lives she took, not even almost every corrupt noble or official in the Capitol's empire could compete with her, including Aria and Captain Ogre for example. It's true that Esdeath is honorable, protective and affable, but she basically has a heinous standard that allows her to compete with Prime Minister Honest.
- In addition, she's the only Near Pure Evil in the anime version of Akame Ga Kill! as neither Enshin nor the rest don't appear in the anime.
