My sister the moon burns brightly tonight. She's very excited of course. Soon we will force our father. Amun Ra, the sun, down on his knees to grovel in the mud for mercy. But there will be no f-cking mercy. I will cut off his head and suck out his brains and spit them into the dust. Ah, they've always worshipped him. My father, that f-cking sun, since they crawled out of caves mortals have adored him. Because they're afraid of the dark. Soon there will be ONLY darkness, and terror will be all they know.
~ Erzsebet declaring her hatred for Ra and her desire to bring eternal night to the earth.
No longer shall we be trapped on the edges of the world in pitiful shadows! The skies will break into obsidian black, and my glory will cover the Earth. And yes, she was once the humble girl who they called mad. But see! She was the messiah the whole time. And now she has the blood of Sekhmet in her veins. All will see and all will bow. She stands here, not only as your queen, but as your god!
~ Erzsebet giving her new era speech to the vampire court.

Countess Erzsebet Báthory, also known as the Vampire Messiah, is the secondary antagonist of Netflix's 2023 animated dark fantasy series Castlevania: Nocturne. She is loosely based on both the real-life historical figure of the same name and the character of Elizabeth Bartley from Castlevania: Bloodlines.

She is a Hungarian noblewoman and alleged serial killer who became a vampire after being fed the blood of the Egyptian war goddess Sekhmet by Drolta Tzuentes. Becoming the self-proclaimed "Vampire Messiah" claiming Sekhmet's powers for herself, Erzsebet now desires to plunge the world into eternal darkness and lead the vampire race to crush the growing French Revolution and conquer the world.

She is voiced by Franka Potente in English and Rica Fukami in the Japanese dub.

Her Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

In General[]

  • Unlike other vampires in the franchise who have tragic backgrounds, a set of standards, or personal beliefs and philosophies that drive them, Erzsebet is an arrogant megalomaniac with almost no redeeming qualities. Everything she does is to satisfy her ego and make the world worship her as a god.
  • She's to date the biggest sadist in the entire series. While most vampires merely kill their victims in a brutal but efficient manner, Erzsebet will personally torture her victims in methodical ways over the course of many days. This was something that carried over from her human lifetime, having tortured many young girls and boys to death.
  • She has no care for her followers, except Drolta, seeing them solely as canon fodder for her conquest and worshippers to appease her god complex.

Background[]

  • As a human, she tortured many children to death before being arrested for her crimes. When Drolta calls her "the most evil woman in the world" for these crimes, she doesn't dispute the claim.
    • It’s also implied that she also murdered her husband, Ferenc Nádasdy.
  • For centuries after her turn into a vampire by Drolta, she would drink Sekhmet's preserved blood to gain the goddess's powers for herself, effectively desecrating the goddess's shrine.
  • Massacred dozens of villages in Russia who she saw as defying the "natural order" by living freely of old aristocratic regimes.
    • At her order, Drolta would kidnap young women from these villages and tie them up in her dungeon, where Erzsebet would subject them to days of torture for her amusement. A little girl was among her victims.
  • When Tera's sister was captured for her to torture, she also turned her into a vampire to use her Speaker magic for her own ends. This led to Tera killing her sister as an act of mercy when she went to rescue her, something that would haunt her forever.
    • When Erzsebet found Tera in her dungeon, she tried to capture her as she fled, likely planning to torture her as well.

Castlevania: Nocturne[]

  • She rallies a cult following of vampires from all over the world to help her wage war on the French Revolution and conquer the world. At her request, the Marquis of Maschoul and his associates would drink the blood of and kill dozens of commoners whose corpses would be used by Emmanuel's Hell Machine to transform them into Night Creatures with which to conquer Europe and eventually the world.
  • She slowly feeds on the blood of the daughter of a revolutionary Drolta had given her out of sadistic lust, eventually turning her into a vampire that obediently served Erzsebet.
  • When discussing tactics with Olrox, she summons a magic sphere to threaten him into bowing to her when he refuses to give her "proper" respect, taking smug satisfaction in making him submit to her. She also reveals she intends to use him to conquer America as her "guide".
  • Reveals her knowledge of Emmanuel's daughter Maria, who she demands he sacrifice to her as a sign of his loyalty, mocking the abbot for breaking his oath of celibacy. This leads to Emmanuel almost sacrificing his daughter on the Altar, even though Erzsebet really wanted to turn her into a vampire.
  • Magically eclipses the sun with her powers before letting her followers terrorize the countryside.
  • Reveals that she wants to turn Maria into a vampire rather than kill her, both to make use of her magical powers and to have a bargaining chip to keep Emmanuel under her control.
  • When Tera offers herself in Maria's place, she painfully transforms her into a vampire in front of Emmanuel and Richter. Maria would be deeply affected by this, becoming vengeful and bitter towards everyone and eventually murders Emmanuel in a fit of rage.
  • When Tera resists her, she holds her close to the sun to slowly burn her, which Tera thankfully avoids by using ice to block the light. She then sends Tera to summon Emmanuel by making her walk through the sunlight barely shielded by a block of ice over her head purely to make her suffer. Also, Erzsebet knew very well that Emmanuel will be upset at seeing Tera walk under the sun.
  • Orders Emmanuel to turn his monks into Night Creatures and is furious when he refuses out of respect for them. When she realizes that Night Creatures can retain their souls and memories, she immediately demands that he resurrect Drolta with the machine and threatens him when he initially refuses.
  • After Drolta is resurrected as a Night Creature, she sends her to massacre the Revolutionary army sent to Paris to transform their corpses into more demons for her army. The captain of this army is devastated when she's resurrected as a slave to her force's enemy.
  • When a minion tells her about Richter, Annette and Alucard's journey to Paris in search of Sekhmet's mummy, she "rewards" him by having him branded on his head against his will out of sadism.
    • When Drolta confronts Olrox over his loyalties, she has Drolta brand him too just to torment and humiliate him.
  • Devours Sekhmet's heart to enhance her powers and conjure another eclipse.
  • Leads an attack on Paris with the intention of destroying the entire city, personally slaughtering dozens of Revolutionary soldiers.
  • Attempts to kill Richter, Annette (possessed by Sekhmet's third soul), Maria, and Juste. At the end of the fight, she tries to blast Annette to distract Richter, who gets injured trying to shield her, before blasting Juste and Maria with magic and rendering them unconscious. She tries to kill Annette and Richter but collapses from exhaustion after the fight took a toll on her.
  • Her crying as Sekhmet's third soul prepares to take her other 2 souls back from her isn't played for sympathy since she's only doing so out of self-pity and denial over her defeat, the moment only further highlighting her feelings of entitlement to Sekhmet's power and how pathetic she truly is in spite of her delusions of godhood.
  • Drolta betraying and killing her to claim Sekhmet's powers for herself doesn't make her a scapegoat as she deserved it for all the death and suffering she was responsible for, with the horror of the scene being more due to it showing how much more dangerous Drolta is than Erzsebet.

What Prevents Her From Being Pure Evil?[]

  • She genuinely mourns Drolta, whose death at Alucard's hands leaves her stricken with grief and vowing revenge on Alucard. She holds a funeral for her and upon learning that Emmanuel's Night Creatures can retain their souls and minds she orders him to resurrect her and is overjoyed when she returns from Hell as a Night Creature. This shows that despite seeing her as a servant, Drolta is the only loved one Erzsebet has.

Trivia[]

  • It’s been heavily theorized that Erzsebet had been the culprit behind the death of her husband, Ferenc Nádasdy, the Black Knight of Hungary, since the “unknown illness” that killed him might not have existed at all, and that it was actually a cover-up story to prevent the public from knowing Erzsebet’s possible betrayal against her spouse. If this was confirmed true, then it would make Erzsebet even worse.
