Sheriff Eric Newlon, also known as John Carver, is the main antagonist of the 2023 film Thanksgiving, and its upcoming sequel.
He is the sheriff of Plymouth, Massachusetts. When his pregnant girlfriend Amanda was accidentally scalped to death by enraged shoppers in a Black Friday riot, Newlon was left traumatized and heartbroken by the death of his girlfriend and unborn child. Years later, he plans on getting revenge by stealing a John Carver mask and axe, aiming to kill anyone he believes was responsible for Amanda's death.
He was portrayed by Patrick Dempsey, who also portrayed Dylan Gould in Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

What Makes Him Close To Being Pure Evil?[]
- He brutally killed many people, such as a waitress named Lizzie (although she was involved in Amanda's death) by having her sliced in half by a dumpster from running it over with his car out of sadism.
- Before killing her, he sliced her hand and dunked her head in a sink before throwing her in an open freezer leaving her stuck.
- He brutally killed a security guard named Manny (who had abandoned his post during Black Friday) by stabbing him with an electric carving knife, then decapitating him with a wire.
- He killed two high schoolers Lonnie and Amy by twisting Lonnie's head and stabbing Amy multiple times while she was hopping on a trampoline. To be fair, Lionel is one of those who crushed to death the young security agent during Thanksgiving.
- He killed Yulia by stabbing corn cob holders in her ears, and disemboweling her on a buzzsaw.
- He decapitated Lionel at a Thanksgiving parade in front of many kids, leaving them traumatized.
- His actions at the parade led to a grandfather in a parade being brutally killed in front of his grandkids.
- He cooked Kathleen alive in an oven, stabbing her with a syringe before killing her in cold blood. Even though it was brutal, it is worth mentioning Kathleen wasn't as moral as anyone may think considering she demanded for the security tapes to be cleared.
- He taunted Jessica and her friends by tying them to a table with the bodies of his victims and used Kathleen's cooked body as the "course."
- He bludgeoned Evan with a hammer in front of his friends, even though Evan is the one who filmed the Black Friday massacre and provoked many people to riot.
- He also tried to force Thomas to eat his own wife's flesh.
- He also continuously taunted Jessica and her friends on social media with threats.
- While it is true that some of Jessica's friends did indirectly provoke the Black Friday massacre, they did not deserve to be murdered. Even if his main motive is to take revenge on those who are responsible for Amanda's death, it goes far beyond extremism due to the sheer brutality of his kills, especially when they weren't all murderers, aside from Lionel and Lizzie.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Evil?[]
- He has a genuinely tragic backstory of losing his lover Amanda Collins and their unborn child during a Black Friday riot. Furthermore, he genuinely loved his lover Amanda Collins, and their unborn child, with their deaths being the sole reason for him becoming a serial killer to take revenge on those he deemed responsible.
- With that said, however, his relationship with Amanda was the result of getting her to cheat on with her husband coupled with his brutality towards the people that didn't deserve to be murdered make this a somewhat minor prevention.
- He has a soft spot for animals, in which after killing Manny, he noticed his cat was hungry and gave it food and some pets, showing he is an animal lover and would never harm them.
