Equinox is the main antagonist of the Batman: The Brave and the Bold animated series, specifically the first season.
He is the former apprentice of the Lords of Chaos and Order. However, Equinox rebelled against his masters and wants to recreate the cosmos in his own image to be balanced. He is one of the three arch-nemeses (alongside Joker and Gentleman Ghost) of Batman.
He was voiced by Oded Fehr.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- Even though it's mentioned he is insane, he is still able to come up with complex plans, have sophisticated conversations with other people and justify his worldview, thus he doesn't have moral agency issues due to his insanity.
- In his first appearance, he captures the supervillain Gorilla Grodd and the superhero The Question and tries to burn them both alive because Grodd's actions had threatened the balance and needs to be eliminated, but he also wants to sacrifice The Question because he doesn't want Order to become stronger than Chaos and, thus, people from both alignments would need to be killed. He is only stopped when Batman appears and saves them both.
- After finding out that General Kafka's village had been destroyed by the Global Protection Agency, Equinox manipulates Kafka into trying to destroy New York as a revenge for his village. Equinox tries to orchestrate the events in such way, that a nuclear meltdown would be caused which would destroy all of New York and would balance Kafka's destroyed village. This is only stopped when Batman sacrifices himself to stop the nuclear meltdown and Equinox restores him to life, believing Batman's death at that point in time would unbalance the scales.
- He tries to use an ancient gyroscope to stop the rotation of Earth and leave the planet in a permanent state of balance where it would be half-frozen and half-burned forever.
- He tricks Batman and Dr. Fate into killing him which allows him to ascend to a higher plane of existence where he could draw on both Order and Chaos energies freely. He drains the power of the Lords of Chaos and Order as well as all their other servants until they die and Equinox becomes more powerful than ever.
- His battle with Batman amidst a huge city causes a lot of collateral damage and presumably even some casualties. At one point, Equinox even tries to unroot an entire building and throw it at Batman, uncaring that there might be people inside which causes Batman to teleport both of them in space to avoid the collateral damage.
- Equinox tries to destroy the whole universe because he thinks it's unbalanced and plans to replace it with a new one which would be "perfectly balanced".
- After Batman defeats him and the twelve elements of his consciousness are scattered around time and space, Equinox' hate falls into a giant computer which gives him new life. He tries to kill every variation of Batman in history with killer robots and has captured and tortured Robot Batman for a long period of time. Equinox' hate is only destroyed when multiple versions of Batman unite and destroy his body.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- No matter how insane his motivations are, he is a well-intentioned extremist who believes his actions will balance the scales between Chaos and Order and he wants to create a world and a universe with a perfect balance between the two elements. When Batman manages to prove to Equinox that he himself is not in balance because the Chaos in him is stronger than the Order since he rebelled against his masters out of anger, Equinox has an emotional breakdown because he realizes that if he is not in balance everything he had done had been for nothing which proves his intentions are genuine.
- He has a tragic backstory as he was once an orphan who was chosen by the Lords of Chaos and Order and empowered with both elements to act as an equalizer to keep the universe in balance. However, Equinox' psyche was fractured under the strain of his never-ending responsibilities which caused him to hate his masters and left them, believing he could do a better job of balancing the universe without answering to them.
