You have no idea how good that felt! I ravaged their entire country with a single bullet! I mean talk about invigorating! Oh, and the best part? The officer that I pretended to be, he was actually a moderate who'd always publicly opposed the military's occupation of Ishval. And listen to this! The poor fool couldn't come up with a plausible defense and they court-martialed him! You know, I don't think I'll ever get over with how easy to manipulate humans are!
~ Envy describing their murder of a child.
You humans don't make any sense to me. You throw away your lives for nothing.
~ Envy to Maes Hughes.

Envy is a major antagonist of the 2001 fantasy manga series, Fullmetal Alchemist, and its direct 2009 anime adaptation Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

A homunculus, they are the fourth of the primary antagonist Father's children, and serves as his field scout and spy in his operation to sacrifice Amestris in order to ascend to godhood, shapeshifting to carry out assassinations or indulge in their sadistic impulses.

Envy has the physical appearance of an toned, androgynous youth, with their true form being that of a large lizard-like monster containing the half-integrated bodies of the various souls that power them. When depowered, they take the form of a small worm-like creature. Envy is a ruthless and malevolent sadist who enjoys tormenting humans. They're also the arch-nemesis of Roy Mustang as they killed Maes Hughes, as well as the arch-enemy of both Edward Elric and Scar.

They were voiced by Minami Takayama in Japanese and Wendy Powell in English.

Their Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Them Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • As a general rule, Envy goes for the most cruel and emotionally crushing way for handling their targets at all times, mocking their weak points and personal flaws in order to get under their skin as much as possible.
  • Prior to the start of the story, Envy deliberately shapeshifts into the form of an Amestrian soldier that had been publicly against the occupation of Ishval to begin with and shoots a young child while looking them dead in the eyes with a sadistic grin. After doing so, Envy brags about the event several years later in front of Edward's face while describing the act joyfully.
    • Doing so, they knowingly set off the Ishvalan genocide under the command of Father, which leads to the deaths of untold hundreds of thousands of innocents and the suffering of numerous survivors on both sides of the conflict. Scar is a notable example of the latter group due to his fall from grace as a young warrior priest turned traumatized serial killer.
    • To make this worse, Envy notes that soldier was court-martialed and likely executed after they framed him for this crime.
  • Together with Lust and Gluttony, they intentionally set off mass chaos in Liore, with Envy assuming the form of Father Cornello after Ed exposes him as a fraud and Lust kills him, intentionally provoking conflict in the town in order to assist in Father's plans by creating further death and chaos.
  • When Maes Hughes, a loving family man, attempts to expose the conspiracy undermining the foundation of Amestris, Envy discovers his intentions and murders him, first imitating the form of his military friend Maria Ross and then his own wife Gracia, using his hesitance in order to shoot and kill him.
  • Attempts to guilt trip the horrified and grief-filled Tim Marcoh with the knowledge of the atrocities he committed in creating the Philosopher's Stone.
  • Manipulates the small 12-year-old girl Mei Chang out of returning to her home country of Xing after being caught as a result of their own hubris and overconfidence, emotionally manipulating the child by posing as being victimized and relating their personal issues to her own.
  • After getting into proper position, they absorb the powers of various Mannequin Soldiers to regain their strength before lunging after Mei Chang in an attempt to murder her, having full intent to do so but being distracted before they could.
  • After being distracted, they reveal in front of Mae Hughes's close friend Roy Mustang that they killed him, mocking his face and death cries, which triggers Roy Mustang's anger into torching them into smithereens.
    • Although Envy is horrified that Roy would set Maes Hughes on fire, this was after Envy said that Roy wouldn’t kill his best friend in their own voice, so it isn’t standards.
  • Attempts to turn the various characters that find them in their diminished form into brutalizing each other by feeding into their deepest impulses and having an emotional breakdown when it fails.
  • When Edward Elric exposes the truth of their emotional neuroses and problems, they choose to kill themself out of shame rather than confront their emotional issues any further, demonstrating their cowardice.
  • Despite numerous moments of being a hilariously pathetic chew toy, their horrifically cruel and sadistic actions are still presented completely seriously within the story and the main characters are absolutely repulsed and disgusted by them.

What Prevents Them from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Despite their seemingly sociopathic nature, Envy genuinely does love and care about the other homunculi, mourning Lust's death and showing anger for Wrath's lack of care for her death and calling out Pride for his lack of care towards his other siblings in the manga.
  • While incredibly pathetic, their death is sympathetic, as their insecurities about lacking any genuine emotional connection to anyone are finally revealed and they are forced to confront the true root of their behavior after being given a momentary second of empathy by Ed, resulting in them emotionally collapsing to the extent that they kill themself while drowning in their own tears. Their death marks the first and last time where they call Ed by his full name instead of the insulting nickname "pipsqueak", implying some sense of respect for the boy.

Trivia[]

  • The 2003 version of Envy do not count as their worst atrocities have too much fridge horror along with being too off-screen.
