I am Doctor Starline, and I am indeed the one behind your present concerns.
~ Dr. Starline introducing himself to Sonic.
Dr. Starline: I will restore you to your former glory. Dr. Eggman will be reborn!
Mr. Tinker
: But I'm not him! I don't want to be Eggman!
Dr. Starline
: And he certainly wouldn't want to be you. Just sit back, relax, and think of Eggman Land.
~ Dr. Starline before torturing Mr. Tinker to turn him back into Dr. Eggman.
Eggman... Doctor Eggman... rejected me. I worked... so hard... to help him. And he robs me! Has me thrown into the wilderness! If he won't accept my help, he'll be made to see! See this frame I prototyped?! It's REVOLUTIONARY! I was going to show him the concept, but now I'll give him a live display! A-A-And it'll run rings around Metal Sonic! Whatever it turns out to be... No sloppily constructed badniks! No overspecialized vanity projects! YES! THAT MEANS YOU, METAL SONIC! BUT A VERSATILE, ROBUST, SUPERIOR CREATION!
~ Dr. Starline's villainous breakdown after being fired by Dr. Eggman, planning to create Surge.

Dr. Starline is the secondary antagonist of the IDW Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series.

He is an anthropomorphic platypus and scientist who is a fanatic of Dr. Eggman. After studying Eggman's career for years, Starline finally met his idol in-person and managed to restore the doctor's lost memories he lost following from his previous defeat. After suffering from Eggman's verbal abuse during the Zombot outbreak, Starline decided to become an independent would-be-conqueror and attempt to upstage Eggman as his superior replacement after failing to gain his recognition and respect. He briefly succeeded in taking over the Eggman Empire but was quickly upstaged by Eggman and ended up perishing as a building collapsed on top of him.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He breaks Rough and Tumble out of jail and has them kidnap Mr. Tinker.
  • Tortures Mr. Tinker to restore his Eggman persona and succeeds when Metal Sonic gives him the final push. By restoring Eggman, Starline is indirectly responsible for all the crimes Eggman commits afterwards, including the Metal Virus.
  • Helps Eggman create and infect the planet with the Metal Virus.
  • Tried to kill Sonic and Silver by blowing up the building they were in.
  • He brings the Deadly Six to Sonic's world with the Warp Topaz in an attempt to get the Zombots under control and they start wreaking havoc with the Metal Virus.
  • He refused to let the heroes use the Warp Topaz. While he was ultimately right, as Silver acknowledged, about it being unstable and it did implode, it was their only option since he had worsened the Metal Virus crisis by summoning the Deadly Six, which he took no responsibility for. Unlike them and Eggman, he still believed in finding a way to control the Metal Virus rather getting rid of it.
  • He breaks Zavok, Rough, Tumble, and Mimic out of jail and has them steal Eggman’s tech for him. He later attempted to kill all of them after they had completed their mission.
  • He hypnotizes Rouge the Bat and has her attack and kidnap Tails.
  • He kidnaps Tails and Rouge on a roller coaster.
  • He sets a bomb off which starts an avalanche coming to White Park Grand Chateau and gave Sonic a choice which was to save the citizens or his friends.
  • He injects the Mechanic with a toxin, threatening to kill him.
  • He kidnaps Belle to use her blueprints to create Surge and Kit.
  • Mentally traumatizes Belle by revealing to her he is the one who killed Eggman's Mr. Tinker persona, which he takes great pleasure in doing.
  • Starline kidnaps Surge and Kit and erases their previous personalities, deeming them "irrelevant" and keeping no records of them.
  • He psychologically abused and tortured Surge and Kit several times using his hypnotic glove.
  • He put Surge and Kit through hundreds of dangerous tests that actually killed them, something he didn’t care about since he could just revive them.
  • He has Surge and Kit burn down a forest, endangering many campers and almost getting a child killed, to try and kill Amy, Tangle, Jewel, and Belle all to emotionally hurt and weaken Sonic.
  • He has Surge and Kit cause an energy surge in Central City, causing property damage and endangering peoples’ lives.
  • When Surge and Kit hack into his computer and find out what he did to them, Starline attacked them so he could hypnotize them and make them forget what they saw, going as far as to electrocute Kit with his Multi-Tool Heel Spurs and temporarily paralyze him.
  • Hacks into Eggman's network and took control of his entire army, in an attempt to take over the world.
  • Even after his death, the trauma he caused Surge is still present, via hallucinations she experiences while wearing the Dynamo Cage. His conditioning on Surge and Kit is also the main reason why Sonic and Tails fail to get through to and redeem them, earning Starline a posthumous victory.
  • He is universally despised by everyone who knew him, if not more than Eggman; the heroes show contempt towards him for his role in restoring Eggman to evil as well as brainwashing and kidnapping them while the other villains loathe him for his cruelties against them; though Sonic states his leniency with villains extends to Starline, he evidently holds a clear dislike for the scientist. Sonic and Surge show no sympathy when learning of his demise and though Belle, who tried to warn him to get out of harm's way, was affected at witnessing it, she gets over it quickly. While Tails openly questioned if it was okay letting Eggman seize the Warp Topaz and discard Starline, and called Eggman out for not acknowledging Starline, they do not make him sympathetic or a scapegoat since it’s not broached further and only because of the terrible things Starline did respectively.
  • While he wasn't taken seriously in-universe and treated as nothing more than a nuisance (primarily mocked as a fanatic trying to imitate Eggman), this is subverted after his death. Surge, while deeming him a weakling upon discovering his demise, is revealed to be fearful of him for all his abuse through having hallucinations of him in a sociopathic light while Sonic and Tails, who referred him as an "Eggman Giga-Fanboy" and "Eggman-Wannabe", are deeply disturbed when they discover what he did to Surge and Kit.
  • While he’s not as heinous as Eggman and Eggman Nega, he still stands out due to his much lower resources and personal villainy towards Belle, Surge, and Kit, as well as the legacy he had after his death.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He shows genuine respect for several people:
    • He admires and respects Dr. Eggman even after the doctor disappointed and mistreated him. He also wanted to rule the world with him as an equal after he conquered the world and prove his methods to do so were better. He even explicitly tells Surge that Eggman isn't to be killed, only Sonic and Tails, rather instead appealed to after taking over his empire, and during their final confrontation, Starline told Eggman that everything he did was for him.
    • He respects Sonic for being a powerful foe and the only individual that could stop Eggman. This respect was maintained even after learning Eggman's defeats were also his own fault rather than just Sonic’s, remarking he was every bit of the powerhouse he thought even if reckless.
    • He shows respect for Tails, who deems as Sonic’s most beneficial ally; initially believing him a narcissist like Eggman when trying to infiltrate his self-imaged lab, he still recognized Tails' skills could be liability to his plans and was impressed with how the fox reinforced his security measures after his experience with the Metal Virus.
