Doctor Neo Cortex is the main antagonist of Willy the Wombat, the initial concept of Crash Bandicoot. He is an evil scientist who once suffered trauma from the world and now seeks to take revenge on humanity and conquer the world.

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- According to the documents based on the prototype game, Cortex was most likely the one who caused the explosion at his family circus as revenge for abusing him, which ended up killing his family. Note that he was only five when he does it.
- After getting enrolled in a high school as well as receiving abuse from the students and teachers, Cortex, along with his newfound friend N. Brio, destroyed the school, and most of the city by a nuclear explosion in the physics department.
- During Cortex and Brio's quest to find a home, he caused a number of explosions and catastrophes behind, including the Chernobyl explosion. This ended up getting them wanted by international law organizations, until they got some shady land offers in Australia, in which they arrived Wumpa Islands.
- After settling in Wumpa Islands, Cortex now makes plans to get revenge on humanity for the abuse he perceived from them, and dominate the world as well.
- He created the Cortex Vortex, a machine which brainwashes the animals that he kidnapped for mutative experiments. Those animals include Ripper Roo, Pinstripe, Koala Kong, the Komodo Brothers, and Willy. Tawna, who will be Willy's girlfriend, was one of the animals being taken to the Vortex as well.
- This indirectly leads to conflicts between Pinstripe and the Komodo Brothers, because of the rivalry between mammals and reptiles, to the point where they send hitmen to kill each other.
- As Willy went strange and talks in a strange way, Cortex deems him a failure and have him thrown out to the ocean.
- His castle was built with a power station that polluted the Wumpa Islands.
- He has been abusive towards his subordinates, making them blindly loyal to him, and have created dungeons in the castle's catacombs to torture those he particularly hates.
- While he was friends with Brio, this friendship deteriorated in the later years as Cortex has been cruel and controlling towards him, making him a doormat servant and constantly abusing him, such as putting screws in his skull as a way to punish him.
- Unlike the Cortex in the finished game (as well as the following games), this version of Cortex is hardly played for laughs. While he does have some funny moments, they are very few and not frequent, and he is generally treated seriously by the narrative. Not to mention, he is more competent compared to Cortex in the finished games, despite having some failures of his inventions.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He has a tragic backstory as he suffered abuse and humiliation during his circus career, to the point of having trauma of anything related to clowns. After going to high school, he is still bullied by others for his infancy or bookish attitude. It is also shown that he and Brio were ridiculed in many places they went around the world, which caused him to resent humanity to the point of wanting revenge. While it doesn't excuse his actions, it is portrayed out of sympathy to some degree and he is actually affected by it.
