~ Android 20 (also known as Dr. Gero) after destroying a city. |
Dr. Maki Gero, also known as Android 20, is a major antagonist in the Dragon Ball franchise.
He is the head scientist of the Red Ribbon Army and the one behind the creation of Cell and the Future Androids and the figure that was responsible for multiple deaths due to his creations. He is also the arch-nemesis of Bulma (primarily her future timeline counterpart).
He was voiced by the late Kōji Yada, and Ikuya Sawaki in Dragon Ball Legends in Japanese and Kent Williams in Funimation dub, Brian Dobson in Ocean Group dub, and Ed Marcus in AB Groupe dub in English.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- He was directly responsible for the actions of Cell and the Future Androids, including Cell almost destroying the Solar System.
- He is completely devoid of any comedic moments or redeeming qualities that other villains show throughout the series and is taken 100% seriously.
- Despite Dragon Ball's massive heinous standards, he manages to stand out for not only being a major part in the Red Ribbon Army, but for being the one who created Cell and the Future Androids, making him the one responsible for the gigantic amount of deaths and destruction they caused. He even gave Cell the ability to painful absorb people and the Androids, making him stand out as well.
- Althrough he was horrified by Android 19's death, it's only because Android 19 was one of his most powerful henchmen and he would have prefered to continue using him.
Background[]
- He was part of the Red Ribbon Army, assisting in their goals to terrorize and conquer Earth.
- After the destruction of the Red Ribbon Army, he created Cell and the androids so he could get his revenge on Goku and kill him.
- While creating the androids, Gero stalked Goku for years during his adventures and used him and his enemies' DNA to create Cell. An addition design for Cell was to not only regain his perfect form, but also acquire even more powerful Saiyan cells.
- At some point of time, he also kidnapped two innocent teenagers named Lapis and Lazuli, forcefully turning them into Androids 17 and 18. In the Future timeline, it's heavily implied, if not outright stated, that he is the reason for 17 and 18 being the way they are, having fully removed their humanity and memories to where they believed they were fully mechanical, as well as programming them to hate humanity to the point of sadistically killing any human they saw, making him just as, if not more, responsible for the people they killed.
- He destroyed all the Androids before 16 (with the exception of 8 in the main series and 13, 14, and 15 if you count the movies) for being too flawed.
Dragon Ball Z[]
- He brutally killed a driver for insulting him, even destroying said driver's car in the process.
- He absorbed Yamcha's energy and tore his hand through his chest, nearly killing him.
- He ruthlessly destroyed half of a city, killing thousands of people.
- He shot Piccolo in the chest with his Eye Beams.
- He gleefully watched Android 19 beat Goku to near-death and draining Goku's energy while Goku was suffering from a heart virus, only for Vegeta to save his life.
- He tried to absorb Piccolo's energy and would've done it if not for Gohan's intervention.
- He struck down Bulma's plane with a Photon Wave, nearly killing her, Yajirobe and Trunks, who was an infant at the time.
- He attacked a farmer who tried to shoot him due to thinking he was a deer.
- He was able to get Goku, King Kai, Future Trunks, Androids 17 and 16 and the future Z-Fighters killed by the hands of Cell and the Future Androids posthumously, before Goku, Future Trunks and 17 were revived by Old Kai and Shenron
- Not only that, but he also indirectly got Bojack released from his imprisonment because of Goku and King Kai's deaths.
- Also, because of Goku's death, he was prevented from helping the Z-Fighters with their battle with Majin Buu, thus allowing Buu to go on a mass killing spree throughout the universe, which would later serve as a catalyst for both Gomah turning Goku and his friends into kids, which kickstarted the events of Dragon Ball Daima, and Moro being able to go on a huge rampage after Buu's death.
- On top of that, as a result of his and the Future Androids actions, this would indirectly allow Goku Black and Future Zamasu to destroy the rest of the future timeline because of Future Trunks' time traveling to the present timeline to warn the Z-Fighters about the androids.
- He was one of the many dead villains shown cheering for Kid Buu during his fight with Goku.
Dragon Ball GT[]
- He helped Dr. Myuu create Super 17, who later killed Krillin.
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero[]
- His actions would eventually lead to the return of the Red Ribbon Army years later, with new androids being built like Gamma 1, Gamma 2 and Cell Max, the latter of which almost beat Piccolo to death and eventually led to Gamma 2's sacrifice.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He loved his deceased son Gevo, so he created Android 16 under his image, and gave him a gentle personality because he couldn't bear to see him get destroyed in battle.
Trivia[]
- Originally, during the early portion of the Android/Cell Saga, Gero himself, alongside Android 19, was to be the main villain of the future timeline, with the manga even having Future Trunks outright say "19 and 20" when warning of the Android menace. Had this remained, Gero would have gotten even worse as he would have been directly responsible for the Future timeline, moreso than he is in the official series.
- He shares some similarities to Doctor Mindbender from G.I. Joe, both are mad scientists (who also are usually depicted with mustaches) working for a terrorist organization (the Red Ribbon Army for Gero, COBRA for Mindbender), they created Androids, and they both created a bio-engineered Supersoldier that ultimately went beyond their expectations (Cell for Gero, Serpentor for Mindbender)
