Dr. Arthur Arden (real name: Hans Gruper) is the secondary antagonist of American Horror Story: Asylum and the overarching antagonist of American Horror Story: Freak Show.
He is the physician and Administrator at Briarcliff Manor. A confirmed Nazi war criminal, he was responsible for the altered humans running rampant in the surrounding forest.
He was portrayed by James Cromwell, while in flashbacks, he was portrayed by his son John Cromwell.

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- Before the World War II took place, in the early 1930s, Gruper worked as a leader of snuff filmers in underworld, filming snuff films that had Elsa Mars' legs sawed off by a chainsaw. When Massimo Dolcefino arrived to his house and tried to avenge Elsa, Gruper captured Massimo and tortured him to the point Nazi officers interfered to free Massimo.
- In the past whilst serving as a Nazi officer, Gruper joined the Nazi's concentration camp in 1940s, where he had Jewish twins taken away, possibly for Josef Mengele's experiments. He also had made bonds with female prisoners by granting them sweets, but it was all a ruse to make them trust him and later had them tormented in his experiments and fell sick.
- The teller of the above story, Charlotte Brown, was merely a mentally ill and delusional woman who believed she was "Anne Frank" and spoke it under her deluded persona. However, turned out she was correct about him being Hans Gruper when the story showed that Charlotte's house had a photo of Hans Gruper with Hitler hanged on her house's wall.
- Sam Goodman, a Nazi hunter who worked with Sister Jude to expose Arden, also revealed that Charlotte - no matter what the reason was - got it all right about Arden being Hans Gruper.
- After the Nazi Party's downfall, Gruper escape to the United States under the alias Arthur Arden. Later, he was hired to be the physician of Braircliff Manor, before striking a deal with Mongsignor Timothy Howard to make a test that would benefit the world. Unbeknowest to the Monsignor, however, Arden secretly had patients in Braircliff as his experimental subject of his mixture of disease, under the belief that it will make his subjects "more than human" and survive the Soviet's nuclear attack (if it ever have).
- Arden's victims were twisted into mindless man-eating monsters known as the Raspers. Whenever there were someone in Briarcliff that died, Dr. Arden will have their corpse mutilated and fed to those monsters in the woods.
- Beside the disease experiments, Arden also collected the patients' brains in his lab. When Kit Walker was detained into Briarcliff under the suspicion that he was the Bloody Face, Arden did test on him and even showed Kit a collection of brains from Briarcliff's patients, implying one day he shall do the same to Kit as well.
- In spite of their rivalry, Arden also assisted Sister Jude into placing Lana (among other patients) under electric shock therapy in an attempt to make her forget anything she saw in Braircliff.
- Whilst he was stated to have a disgust to vulgary by rejecting Shelley's seduction, Arden later hired a prostitute to dine with him under the facade to shield her away from the Bloody Face, albeit demanding her to dress as a nun. When the woman discovered Arden's collection of obscene photos and most importantly, his Nazi memorabilias, he attacked her and tried to rape her, but she escaped.
- After he was distraught over Sister Mary Eunice's change (due to demonic possession), Arden found Shelley trying to escape and dragged her into his office, where he had tried to rape her. When Shelley mocked the small size of his genitalia, however, Arden was furious and knocked her down, before he amputated her legs and turned her into a mutated rasper.
- After he discovered the true identity of "Anne Frank" that attacked him was none other than Charlotte Brown, a disturbed woman who had viewed several Nazi documents and believed she was Anne Frank, Arden lobotomized Charlotte and turned her to a woman that was subdued if not nearly mindless. Judging from the revelation that Charlotte was right about Arden, it was more like Arden trying to shield his own identity.
- Eventually, the Monsignor discovered Shelley's condition and committed mercy kill on her. He confronted Arden on what he did and threatened to expose him, but Arden threatened the Monsignor instead, saying everything from Braircliff will be exposed if the Monsignor to do so. Arden then had the Monsignor to work with him again and got Jude out of Braircliff.
- After Jude's return to Braircliff, Arden gradually accepted that Sister Mary Eunice was possessed by the Devil, but he was still loyal to her. At first, he feigned an alliance with his long time rival Sister Jude, only locking Jude in a room alongside Leigh Emerson.
- Later, Arden and Emerson took part in the Devil's plot of framing Jude on the murder of Frank, which was committed by the possessed Sister Mary Eunice. Jude was detained soon after that.
- When Jude standing up against the Devil-possessed Sister Mary Eunice for multiple times, Arden and the Devil placed Jude under electric shock. Whilst Arden advised that the current should not be put above 10%, the Devil ordered him to increase the current as Jude was one tough cookie, and Arden complied. It had broke Jude's mind even further and nearly made her lost it.
- Despite the High Heinous standards of AHS, he surpasses it as he is responsible for causing hundreds of deaths with low resources.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He genuinely loved Sister Mary Eunice and purity of Marie Eunice, which was destroyed by Satan, and would drive him to suicide once Mary Eunice died.
