Otto Octavius was weak! Call me... Doctor Octopus!
~ Birth of Doctor Octopus
Doc Ock: I should have seen it sooner, Spider-Man! You're weak! You can't bear to see anyone hurt!
Spider-Man: I could learn to make an exception!
Doc Ock: And your meager thought process is so transparent! Stall until his power runs out! But this pack has another hour of juice at least! And think of all the damage I can do in one hour, starting with the girl!
~ Doc Ock as he took Liz as hostage.

Dr. Otto Octavius, better known as Doctor Octopus, is one of the secondary antagonists of the 2008-2009 animated television series The Spectacular Spider-Man and a mentioned antagonist in Sony Pictures Animation's 28th feature film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

He is the founder and leader of The Sinister Six. Octavius was a scientist of OsCorp founded by Norman Osborn, but after having his tentacles fused to his back thanks to Green Goblin, he turned into a supervillain, terrorizing New York City as one of Spider-Man's greatest archenemies along with Green Goblin and Venom.

He was voiced by Peter MacNicol, who also voiced the Mad Hatter in the Batman: Arkham series.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Before he became a supervillain, he experimented on Flint Marko and Alex O’Hirn and turned them into supervillains: Sandman and Rhino respectively.
  • While his tragedy was unfortunate and he did not deserve how he turned a supervillain, he embraced his new persona and he viewed his past self as weak.
  • Broke into the Tri-Corp building and attacked two security guards. He then broke into the vault to claim the long term power battery for his mechanical arms, but Spider-Man would snatch it in a nick of time.
  • Chased Spider-Man into Coney Island, endangering everyone in it, including MJ, Gwen, and Flash.
  • Took advantage of Spider-Man's hero syndrome by capturing Liz Allen as hostage and took her to the top of the roller coaster and forced him to choose to keep the battery or save Liz.
  • Upon arrested, he set up a prison break and assembled a villainous group called “The Sinister Six”.
  • He and his Sinister Six tried to kill Spider-Man numerous times.
  • Knowing about Spider-Man’s hero syndrome, he baited him by taking hostages in the bank near Central Park.
  • Taking interest in the Venom symbiote, he decided to peel it off for further study after tempting to kill Spider-Man.
  • Tasked Mysterio in stealing dozens of bombs.
  • Recruited Kraven the Hunter into his new Sinister Six.
  • Had a chance to reform, but instead pretended to have mental illnesses and planned his escape.
  • He revealed himself to be the Master Planner.
  • Bombed the entire construction site just in an attempt to kill Osborn.
  • He jammed the traffic lights, causing multiple cars to crash.
  • Ordered Electro and Vulture to kidnap Gwen Stacy.
  • Ordered Vulture to terrorize New York City as a decoy.
  • Blackmailed Captain Stacy to give him the homeland codes stored at homeland's New York headquarters as he held his daughter captive.
  • Activated the self-destruct sequence in his hideout in an attempt to kill Spider-Man, Gwen, and unconscious Electro in it, proving he does not have genuine care for the latter.
  • Ordered Rhino in destroying the specs so his competitors will not have it.
  • Tries to kill his competitors, Tombstone and Silvermane, so he could rule New York's criminal empire all for himself.
  • Ends up causing Captain George Stacy's death, deeply affecting Spider-Man to the point he joins Miguel O'Hara's Spider-Society upon learning Octopus' actions were part of a Canon Event.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He failed the Heinous Standards to Green Goblin, who is willing to cause more destruction in New York, while having less resources.
  • He seems to have a small, but genuine friendship with the Vulture as they both shared the same desire in bringing down Norman Osborn. This is also the reason why Vulture is one of few members in Sinister Six who never gets berated for his failures.
  • He has a Pet the Dog moment where he politely asked May Parker and Anna Watson to step aside when fighting Spider-Man. He even stopped Rhino from harming them. This was not done out of pragmatism as he gains no benefit of letting them go.

Trivia[]

  • He is the only The Spectacular Spider-Man villain, so far, to be Near Pure Evil.
  • He is one of two versions of Doctor Octopus to be Near Pure Evil, with the other being Olivia Octavius from Into the Spider-Verse.
