| “ | After some hundred... some thousand years... I would be worshiped. I would become the new race's father... Their God! | „ |
| ~ Chief Kakuzawa. |
Director Kakuzawa (simply known as Kakuzawa) is the main antagonist of the manga and anime series Elfen Lied.
He is an power-hungry and egotistical elderly man, entrusted by the Japanese government to run the Diclonius Research Institute, with it being revealed that he is from ancient race of Diclonius himself and seeks to wipe out humanity and rule as a God with his new breed Diclonius, as well as being the one directly responsible for Lucy's fall to the dark side.
Though the government becomes concerned about and suspicious of him, they learn too late that far from controlling the problem of the birth of horned girls with lethal powers, he thought himself their natural ally. It's worth that he almost manipulated all of the characters in the series.
He was voiced by Andy McAvin in English dubbed and voiced by the late Kinryū Arimoto in Japanese dub.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- Despite his so called "tragic" backstory of his kind being hunted by humankind, it don't hold up since it was long before he was born.
- Despite him wanting to create a "Diclonius Uptopia", it don't make him a extremist in slightest.
- He doesn't care for his son Professor Kakuzawa or the nameless Male Diclonius. While he was upset over the former’s death it was due to how useful he is than actual care.
Elfen Lied[]
- He would form the Diclonius Research Institution where he would order to put down many Diclonius children and subjugate any that can be contained to cruel harsh experiments on them without care or remorse where it lead to multiple Diclonius killed or mentally scared.
- He intended to replace humankind with the Diclonius through using Lucy as his means to do so.
- He blackmailed Arakawa into working for him after literally shooting her at gunpoint and only had her treated when she got something useful for him to find Lucy.
- He was the one who sent the Unknown Man out to find Lucy making him responsible for his crimes.
- He would have a missile filled with the Diclonius Virus and had it spread to a city where much later would lead to Diclonius being created leading to Human-Diclonius War and while it happened after his death it counts since he intentionally wanted like it to happen,
- His most disguising crime is revealed he kidnapped Lucy's mother and raped her into having a Male Diclonius son before she committed suicide.
- While not shown the Male Diclonius being the end result of it prevents this from being Fridge-Horror.
- Kakuzawa intended to force Lucy and him to incest crossbreed to replace humankind.
- Despite in the Anime Kakuzawa is a Karma Houdini due to an inconclusive ending, in the Manga he meets his brutal end by Lucy, played for karma and satisfaction for his actions.
- His actions even after his demise would lead to Diclonii from the result of the missile scheme kill many, his actions would also make him partally responsible for Lucy’s death.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He genuinely cares for his daughter, Anna Kakuzawa, as he willingly had put precautions in keeping her alive in a shell in her mutated form so her actual form wouldn't get harmed.
- While this redeeming quality is not shown in the Anime, had a second season been renewed it would’ve likely been shown.
Trivia[]
- He is the only Elfen Lied villain to be Near Pure Evil as the Unknown Man is Pure Evil while everyone else has severe migrating factors or suffer from Van Zant Syndrome.
- He is a Near Pure Evil Hate Sink who is a foil to Kouta a Near Pure Good Love Exalted despite never interacting in and shape or form in either adaption.
- In two known early draft versions of the Anime that would've made him worse if kept in the final version:
- In one lessor known version, he would notice Lucy been attached to Kouta (Who they never interacted in the Manga nor the Final Anime) and kidnap him to lure Lucy who would to come to Kouta's rescue though nothing else beyond it is known what he would have done with Kouta and once Lucy come to his rescue.
- In the more well known Alternate Ending known, he would've had Yuka kidnapped by his men having her nearly become an experiment if not for Lucy and he have Mariko attack the Maple Inn. He would've also not been a Karma Houdini unlike final version as he would attempt his missile sheme from the Manga but would have been foiled by Kurama who survived his demise thanks to Mariko who both would've been killed when it misfired and blown up the institution with them in it would've make it less Anti-Climatic.
