~ Diesel 10 threatening Mr. Conductor before attempting to drop him off the viaduct, revealing that Diesel 10's goals of wanting to destroy the Lost Engine and the Magic Railway and to destroy all the steam engines will lead to the destruction of both universes of Sodor and Shining Time Station. |
Diesel 10 is the main antagonist of the 2000 comedy, fantasy adventure film Thomas and the Magic Railroad, based on the Thomas & Friends franchise.
He is a wicked and sadistic BR Class 42 Warship based diesel locomotive with an additional rooftop clamshell bucket nicknamed "Pinchy", who is noted by Thomas for being 10 out of 10 brutal strength and devious deeds. Diesel 10 is described to be a feared diesel throughout the Island of Sodor as he has been causing trouble for steam engines, but is also obsessed with wanting to destroy a magical steam engine named Lady. He is Thomas and Lady's archenemy.
He was voiced by Neil Crone.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- Even before the events of the movie, Diesel 10 was already a xenophobic, sadistic, and devious diesel engine, as some of the steam engines themselves heavily implied that he caused some major problems for the railway back then to the point that he was sent away because of his actions, as given of how most of them were horrified on seeing his return back on Sodor and Thomas himself remarking of how awful he was in the past.
- From what could be considered his most heinous and MEH crossing ever was when he threatened a man named Burnett Stone that he would destroy Lady, the lost steam engine, after discovering her to the point he chased her which ended in her crashing and being put out of commission for a very long time.
- This action was so awful that it cause the realms of both Sodor, Shining Time, and the Magic Railway that connected both worlds started to lose most of their energy, including the lack of resources on gold dust since Lady was the only one who could produce it, something that would be a major problem for both Mr. Conductor and his Scottish cousin Junior later in the film. In addition, this was one of the reasons why Burnett Stone fell into mass depression (aside from losing his wife Tasha) given how sadden and hurt he sounded when talking to Patch about what happen during this event and the amount of years it took him to find a way to restore Lady back to glory but to no avail.
- Unlike his TV show counterpart, who at least treated the other diesels with some respect and honor, he has no respect or care for Splatter and Dodge (his henchmen in the movie), referring to them as "Splodge" because he thinks he doesn't have time to say both names. When Splatter and Dodge try to warn Diesel 10 that Mr. Conductor will object to Diesel 10's crimes, he doesn't listen and tells them that he can do whatever he wants. To make his treatment of Splatter and Dodge worse, Diesel 10 scolds them by telling them to stop being stupid when they didn't do much wrong. Thus, in the climax, the two turn against him and refuse to chase Thomas and Lady with him (something Diesel 10 brushes off like it didn't matter).
- Aside from just his henchmen, He also doesn't show any respect towards others, as he calls them insulting names like Puffballs, Twinkle toes, Tin Kettles, and Old Teapots.
- Upon returning to Sodor, he rudely thundered pass Thomas, Annie/Clarabel, and Gordon at Killaban Station in the beginning of the film, startling four of them as they all get covered in dust while Diesel 10 speeds away.
- What makes this worse is that given how Thomas and Gordon were both pulling their respective passenger trains (albeit no actual people shown on the station for unknown reasons), he likely cause a public disturbance and yet he didn't care.
- He went to Tidmouth Sheds and then mocked Thomas and James for always needing help when Thomas tried to cheer the latter up, while xenophobically insulting them by stating that steam engines were, "cowardly, cranky, worn-out hunks of metal who couldn't hurt a fly." As well as stating his evil plans to them that he returned to find and destroy Lady again, saying he will dominate the steam engines afterward to the point they will be scrapped for good.
- He dumped sneezing powder around Tidmouth as one of his plans to foil the steam engines, eventually getting all over Thomas and even his henchmen, Splatter and Dodge after Harold the Helicopter flew over them.
- He later wrecked the under repair side of the same sheds at night with his claw, Pinchy with the intent of causing destruction to the shed and only stopped thanks to Mr. Conductor scaring him off with sugar, not before taunting him that he wouldn't like it when he returns to find him.
- After overhearing Thomas and Percy talking about the Magic Railway and the buffers that lead to it at Knapford Station, he proceeded to tell his plan to Splatter and Dodge at the Smelter’s Yard at Killdane, revealing his intentions to not only kill Mr. Conductor with his claw, Pinchy by, "finally putting his lights out," as he found it as a job for him, but also the entire Magic Railway as well, including the magic buffers.
- He also wanted to kill Toby when he was caught eavesdropping on that meeting, only for him to accidentally collapse the shed he was in as Toby planned.
- He grabs a helpless Mr. Conductor (who was on the verge of finding more gold dust by heading for the windmill) with Pinchy and attempted to drop him off the Big Dipper to give him answers of where the magic buffers are after finding him near the bridge while he was walking all by himself.
- Tells Mr. Conductor that when he finds the magic buffers, he and all the steam engines (Which he referred to as puffballs) will be history.
- And to make matters worse, it’s confirmed that by doing this, Diesel 10 would’ve had both Mr. Conductor’s universe and Sodor destroyed as they rely on steam engines (who were all sentient beings) to survive, Diesel 10 of which not caring about his endangerment of both realms.
- Also, even if Mr. Conductor did tell him where the location of the buffers were when Diesel 10 threatened him to tell him so by giving him ten seconds, he would still drop him off the viaduct anyway since he stated that he want him out of the picture for good as mentioned above.
- When Junior landed on Diesel 10's roof after being flown by the windmill when he foolishly decided to ride on it, he proceeds to kidnap him while taunting him for missing his beach bag and calling him nicknames by referencing characters from Gidget into making him think he was a surf board.
- After he takes Junior to the smelter’s yard, where James is working there as well, he attempts to kill the both of them by forcibly pushing James over the near edge of the smelting pit while taking sadistic joy in seeing them in fear as he taunts them over their deaths, and would had succeeded if Junior hadn't used the last of his cousin's gold dust.
- During the final chase scene in the climax, Diesel 10 attempted to kill Thomas the Tank Engine, Lady and Burnett Stone after seeing Thomas and Burnett managing to put her back on steam, while taunting them with death threats such as, "Pinchy's hungry" or "I like my lunch steamed" in the process, only for him to fall off the Big Dipper (which has finally collapsed on itself) and then pettily begged Thomas and Lady (whom he referred to them as "Puffballs, Teapots, and Tin Kettles") to save him when he managed to have Pinchy grab onto a piece of the fallen track's sleepers before falling into a barge of sludge.
- While he did accepted his fate after falling into the barge of sludge, nothing implies he showed any remorse for his despicable actions and only accepted his fate because he could do nothing about it. In this case, he completely deserved it considering what he did.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He has a few comedic moments that detracts from his villainy sometimes, some are:
- Him accidentally hitting himself with his claw, Pinchy, after telling Splatter and Dodge he could do whatever he wanted when they warned Diesel 10 about Mr. Conductor going to put a stop to Diesel 10.
- Him getting scared off when Mr. Conductor threatened to put sugar in his tank when Diesel 10 wrecked the sheds.
- Knocking down a roof to the sheds in the scrapyard to hit Toby but getting the roof to fall onto him and Splatter and Dodge instead.
- Telling Splatter and Dodge to stop being stupid by hitting a coal hopper, only to have the coal in it spilled all over him.
- After his defeat when falling onto a barge filled with sludge, he says, "Uh. Oh well, nice time of the year for a cruise." and then laughs.
Trivia[]
- To highlight the film version of Diesel 10's NPE status, his TV series counterpart was removed from the show after the season 17 episode "The Missing Christmas Decorations" likely because Mattel thought he was way too scary for the preschool audience due to how vile and twisted his theatrical counterpart was (despite still continuing to have a lot of merchandise until the show ended in 2021), ironic considering how P.T. Boomer (who is Pure Evil) was also removed and was relegated into being a cameo for almost the same reason.
- There is one cut storyline in some of the earliest scripts of the film that could've made Diesel 10 even worse had they been filmed:
- George the Steamroller was going to be another henchman of Diesel 10 and that he was going to order him to destroy all the buffers to find and destroy the magic buffers.
- Another noteworthy thing in one of these scripts is that Diesel 10 and P.T. Boomer's fate was going to be way more gruesome than the original workprint or the final cut, where Junior (who was riding Percy after the chase along with Mr. Conductor) was going to turn Boomer and Diesel 10 into sludge with his magic bandana.
- He, alongside Sir Topham Hatt (Paul Vids), are the only Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends villains to be Near Pure Evil.
- He is also the only Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends Near Pure Evil to be official.
- Only this version of Diesel 10 counts as NPE, as his TV show counterpart doesn't qualify due him being On & Off and bog-standard.
