| ~ Dickson, after shooting Shulk |
Dickson is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Lorithia) of Xenoblade Chronicles. He was one of Dunban's war partner and former mentor of Shulk. He found Shulk in the middle of Valak Mountain along the Monado. He would raised and used Shulk as a vessel to revive Zanza. He is later revealed to be one of two Zanza's disciples, alongside Lorithia.
He is voiced by Tsuyoshi Koyama in Japanese and the late Anthony May in English.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- He participated in Zanza's attack on Mechonis many centuries ago, which nearly wiped the Machina out. This is revealed by Egil in a brief flashback where Dickson stood by Arglas, who was possessed by Zanza.
- Although he was a father figure for Shulk growing up, he did it because he wanted to make a vessel for Zanza, his master.
- While he did help Dunban twice in during their battle against the Mechons in Sword Valley and against Metal Face and his army outside of Colony 6, this was done out of pragmatic in order to manipulate Shulk into Zanza's eventual revival.
- Shoots Shulk in the chest for refusing to kill Egil, betraying his adopted son and friends. This causes Zanza to be revived and the deaths of Meyneth and Egil.
- When he attacks the party again, Dunban and Sharla try to appeal to him, believing he is being controlled by Zanza. But Dickson brushes it off, saying he’s in ‘total control’ and that he’s ‘always been like this’. Showing he has clear moral agency.
- He partook in Lorithia’s forcible conversion of Kallian and several High Entia into Telethia. Giving them all a fate worse than death.
- He tries to kill the party numerous times with the Telethia. He even almost shoots Reyn, which was thankfully thwarted by Shulk.
- He takes great delight in taunting the party following his betrayal, most notably Dunban and Melia (making a very disgusting comment about her and Kallian being a couple in the next life).
- Helps Zanza with his plan to wipe out all life on both Titans.
- Following Lorithia’s death, he tries to kill the party in his giant form, all while mocking them every chance he gets.
- Although their working for Zanza, Dickson holds no care or regard for Lorithia. As upon her death, he simply taunts the heroes before challenging them to a fight.
- While Dickson willingly served Zanza, he only did so for his power and not out of legitimate loyalty. He even admits such when throwing in the towel when Shulk mortally wounds him.
- Unlike many Xenoblade villains, he has no tragic backstory whatsoever to justify any of his heinous actions.
- Even upon his death, Dickson has no remorse or regrets for the many atrocities he committed.
- Furthermore, while his death may be sympathetic to a degree, with even Shulk mourning him, he completely deserves it for everything he did to his former allies. When Dickson stops fighting and Reyn tries to continue to fight until Shulk stops Reyn, this doesn't make Dickson a scapegoat for all of the bad things he done including attempting to shot Reyn.
- Overall, Dickson is a descipible person who abused the trust his adopted son and allies had for him with sadistic glee.
- Although Zanza did worse due to kickstarting the game's plot and doing things like being responsible for Egil killing a lot of people, Dickson still stands out due to having less resources. This is due to the fact that most of his worst deeds were actions he did on his own.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- His death is portrayed as sympathetic to a degree, as solemn music plays while Shulk mourns his death. He even shows some lingering respect toward Shulk before he dies, stating that the student has finally surpassed the teacher. But given that Dickson was willing to kill Shulk with no hesitation, it’s a minor prevention.
Trivia[]
- It's too ambiguous but it's implied that Dickson may have cared about Shulk more than he realized during his death, if Confirmed it could change his status. (Or keep him here if his care about Shulk is a minor prevention)
- Dickson was originally classified as Pure Evil, but was later reevaluated and reclassified as Near Pure Evil due to his clear respect for Shulk, which violates the Pure Evil criteria that disqualify villains who show genuine emotional attachment or regard for others.
