Near Pure Evil Wiki

Detective Fenn is one of the overarching antagonists of the Black Mirror episode White Christmas. He is one of the detectives who offered Matthew Trent freedom from prosecution in exchange for helping interrogate murder suspect Joe Potter.

He is portrayed by Simon Nock.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Alongside his co-workers, he had a cookie of Joe Potter created for interrogation as a means to getting a confession out of it for a crime the real Potter committed. They did this through placing Potter's cookie in a cabin that changes to remind him of his crimes for what was five years from his point of view with fellow criminal Matthew Trent.
    • A cookie is a digital copy of a person with equal sentience, initially made to complete tasks for their real selves. However, through using them this way, Fenn has not only removed all agency and rights of the real Potter in fighting his conviction, but he's also tormented an individual who would technically be innocent, given that the cookie is a separate entity from the real Potter. As well, while the real Potter did murder his father-in-law, leading to a child's death, this was done under incredible pressure, and he is shown regretting it immensely.
  • Following Potter's confession to Trent, he enthusiastically goes along with his fellow detectives' arrangement that Trent only be released under the condition that he go on the register. This means he can't hear or see any other person, and the same goes for the other way, where he is singled out by appearing in red. While Trent was a sex offender, this was too severe a punishment for even him.
  • He changed the time settings on Potter's cookie to 1000 years a minute while playing the song 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday' over and over again for no reason other than sadism.
  • After Detective Holder tells him to leave Potter on the setting over Christmas, he does so with pleasure. This would mean he condemned Potter's cookie to at least 3.5 million years trapped in a cabin made to remind him of the worst day of his life while a Christmas song plays in the background on repeat.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil[]

  • He has genuine standards against murderers like Joe Potter and perverts like Matthew Trent. His crimes against them were done to punish them for their actions, even if said punishments were far more severe than warranted.
