~ Derek Lucks' final words before getting shot by Masa's hacked Meta Runner arm. |
Derek Lucks is the main antagonist of the Glitch Productions computer-animated webseries Meta Runner, serving as the main antagonist of Seasons 1 and 2, and the posthumous overarching antagonist of Season 3. He is the archenemy and former boss of Tari and Masa Shimamoto.
He was voiced by David J. G. Doyle.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- Is shown to be very abusive towards his employees, as he threatens to decommission Belle Fontiere after failing a single speedrun, he constantly yells at Tari when she fails, flips out over interviews, etc. It is even heavily implied that he may have been responsible for some of their deaths.
- Though Season 2 flashbacks showed him as much more polite and caring towards Masa, Belle and Lucinia, he ultimately subverts any care for them after Lucinia’s disappearance and only focuses on protecting his own reputation.
- Sofia Porter states how TAS Corp's employees have been connected to fatal gunshots, showing he's probably done several arranged murders.
- In Death Warp, Lamar Williams says that growing up, he had seen what TAS Corp did to their Meta Runners after they had outlived their usefulness, implying that the act of decommissioning a Meta Runner is painful.
Season 1[]
- Experimented on Tari's Meta Runner arm in the real world, causing her to feel excruciating pain inside Theo's game. Even Belle Fontiere thought he was going too far with that, and when she said so to him, he yelled at her saying that only he knew when it was too far.
- Ordered Belle Fontiere to kidnap Tari and Theo so he could make tests on them.
- After witnessing Tari's skills while chasing her car, he switches his plans around from only wanting Tari's abilities to wanting Tari herself. Belle even says how creepy he sounded when he said that.
- Shot Masa's Meta Runner arm off and threatened to have him murdered if Sofia Porter didn't show up to hand his hacked data back to him.
- Crushed Theo's Cartridge which resulted in him feeling immense pain due to not being in his game, Ultra Jump Mania. He then kept the remains of the cartridge to hold him hostage into the TAS Corp servers and guarantee that both Tari would unquestionably work for TAS Corp from that point on and that MD-5 would never try to interfere in his plans again, threatening to completely erase Theo should they go against any of his demands. This shows Luck is perfectly fine with child murder.
Season 2[]
- Tortured Theo by trapping him into a virtual replica of Ultra Jump Mania which kept constantly glitching out, subsequently making the original game's landscape more dangerous, its enemies bigger and stronger, and preventing Theo from defending himself. Lucks even displays sadistic gratification while watching as Theo's despair grows from the disturbing experience he put him through.
- Basically everything he did involving Lucinia Porter: Stating he doesn't need her, threatening his employees to cover it up, telling the public that "she went missing", lying to Belle Fontiere, and firing Masa Shimamoto as he may have been on his tail. Therefore, he is also responsible for Sheridan's path to villainy.
- After Sofia Porter reveals to him that MD-5 is back scheming against him during the Hidden Heroes event, he orders Evelyn to kill off the rest of the players to end the game as fast as possible and foil their plans again.
- He sent Evelyn to TAS Corp's server to kill Theo and Tari to prevent them from obtaining his data.
- Attempted to retrieve the cartridge from Tari by angrily threatening to kill Masa. He then tried to shoot Masa after all his information was released to the media and public.
- His claim that Masa could have saved Lucinia had he stayed loyal to him are so hypocritical it angered Belle to say she's had enough of his lies. Belle also remarks that he is still responsible for what happened to Lucinia since he allowed Sheridan's experiment despite knowing its dangers, and that he could have been honest and taken responsibility for what happened from the start, but instead lied to her and everyone else about Lucinia's whereabouts only to protect his own reputation, reinforcing his selfishness.
- Although his death caused by Sheridan, who in the end turned out way worse than him, ended up horrifying the main characters, it was not played for sympathy; the heroes were scared solely because Masa would be charged with murder. And whenever brought up in season three, his death is seen as well-deserved karma for everything he has done to Tari, Lucinia, the MD-5 and other Meta Runners at TAS Corp.
Season 3[]
- While nothing justifies any of Sheridan's actions and crimes, Lucks is still indirectly responsible for everything he did in Season 3, since his selfish act of stealing Sheridan's credit for the invention of the Meta Runner arm was what influenced Sheridan's insanity and fall to villainy in the first place.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- Despite having no redeeming qualities and passing the general standards, a large majority of his crimes are either offscreen or just heavily implied. In other words, he suffers from fridge horror due too there being too much speculation and theories in his villainy that have yet to be confirmed.
Trivia[]
- As shown in a video containing deleted scenes for Season 1, the act of decommissioning (removing a Meta Runner's arm) would have been demonstrated by having Lucks tear off a Meta Runner's arm with his bare hands. If this had been kept, it would have made Lucks even worse.
- Derek Lucks is the only Meta Runner NPE.
- He is also the only Glitch Productions NPE from a Glitch Productions Show instead of SMG4.
- Although an A.I of him that was created by Sheridan purely just to be tortured gives sincere advise to Tari that helps both her and Theo live in cyberspace after the former gives up her life to save Lucinia, this isn't a redeeming factor on Lucks' end as they aren't the same character.
