Cyrus Grissom, otherwise known as Cyrus the Virus, is the main antagonist of the 1997 action movie Con Air.
He is a criminal on death row and the mastermind behind the take over of the Jailbird, which he and his fellow convicts used as a way to escape confinement and fly to a non-extradition country.
He was portrayed by John Malkovich, who also voiced Dave in Penguins of Madagascar.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- He was already on death row for many reported counts of robbery, arson and murder.
- Before the events of the movie, he had already killed 11 inmates in prison.
- He worked with many other deranged criminals, like Nathan Jones, Johnny 23 (albeit reluctantly) and Joe Parker to hijack the Jailbird as a way to escae confinement.
- He had planted a bomb in his cell before the events of the movie, which later blew up, killing 4 officers.
- He and his fellow convicts disguised themselves as police guards as a way to get even more convicts in another prison onto the Jailbird without any suspicion.
- He takes a notice of Garland Greene and states that he admires the man, which shows just how messed up Cyrus is, as Garland is a serial killer of men, women and children.
- While he orders Nathan to not kill the hostages they had, this was not out of standards but merely pragmatism, as Cameron had convinced him that they may need them alive later on.
- After Francisco Cindino attempts to betray him, instead of simply quickly killing him, he uses a cigarette on a huge puddle of gasoline that Francisco was in, burning the man alive with no remorse.
- Even Diamond Dog was shocked by this action
- When the military men arrive to stop Cyrus' plans, he orders his convicts to kill them, which results in dozens of deaths and almost no survivors on the opposing side.
- He makes threat to Cameron that he will kill his daughter if he tries to stop him, showing he has no qualms against harming children.
- He crashes the Jailbird in Las Vegas, which endangered many innocent lives and killed some of the convicts on the plane, including Johnny 23 (although he did deserve it).
- He attempts to escape from the police once again using a fire truck so that he can be free and most likely cause more mayhem, which luckily fails and results in his death.
- Although he has some comedic lines, he is taken seriously by the story and other characters.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He is honorable to an extent, allowing his fellow convicts to do certain stuff despite it not contributing to his overall plan, getting along with them at times and only attempting to kill those who betray him.
- He has standards against rape, stating he despises rapists and viewing Johnny 23 as a disgusting person and only sparing him for the sake of his master plan to work. He also threatens to kill Johnny if he tried to rape the female guard taken hostage on the Jailbird.
Trivia[]
- Cyrus, alongside Nathan Jones, are the only two antagonists in Con Air to be Near Pure Evil.
