His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- He murdered Inigo Montoya's father, Domingo, so that he would not have to pay the full price for the sword that Domingo had made. He did this in front of Inigo, when he was only eleven years old.
- He permanently scars Inigo's face to remind of the event.
- He serves as the chief torturer to Prince Humperdinck and has a sadistic fascination with pain.
- He creates a torture device called "The Machine" which has the ability to literally suck life.
- He conspires with Prince Humperdinck in his plot to murder Buttercup in order to start a war with guilder.
- He knocks out Westley and brings him to the Pit of Despair to be tortured, which he offers Prince Humperdinck the opportunity to watch.
- He uses the machine to torture Westley and suck away one year of his life, sadistically enjoying his pain and smiling, leaving Westley sobbing.
- While he is initially horrified when Humperdinck brings The Machine up to fifty when torturing Westley, he calms down and observes, still clearly fascinated.
- When Inigo Montoya pursues him and catching up to him in the dining hall, Rugen cheats in the duel by throwing a knife in Inigo's stomach. He reminisces about what he had done to him as a child and taunts Inigo about how he chased him his whole life only to fail.
- When Inigo overpowers him in their duel, Rugen cowardly pleads for his life and offers Inigo whatever he desires, before attempting to kill him one last time.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Evil?[]
- He has genuine loyalty and care for Humperdinck, insisting he take time to rest before he continues his plotting.
- He has some standards, as he is horrified when Humperdinck brings The Machine up to fifty. Though considering he goes back to curiously observing Westley's pain after objecting, this isn't too mitigating.
