Frankenstein: Get off me, you vermin from Hell!
Dracula: What are you complaining about? This is why you were made! To prove that God is not the only one who can create life! And now you must give that life to my children.
~ Count Dracula to the Frankenstein Monster.
Don't you understand? We could be friends. Partners! Brothers-in-arms! Did I mention that it was you who murdered me? It must be such a burden. Such a curse... to be the Left Hand of God. All I want is life, Gabriel. The continuation of my kind. And perhaps the return of my ring. Don't be afraid, Gabriel. Don't be afraid. I shall give you back your life, your memory.
~ Count Dracula's last words to Van Helsing.

Count Vladislaus Dracula is the main antagonist of the 2004 film Van Helsing, a homage and tribute to the Universal Monsters franchise.

He is a centuries old vampire who wants to give eternal life to his dead born children, so they may feast on the people of Transylvania.

He is portrayed by Richard Roxburgh.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close To Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Turned against God as he felt he didn't have freedom, which is why he was killed by Gabriel Van Helsing, the Left Hand of God.
  • After being killed by Gabriel Van Helsing, the Left Hand of God, he makes a bargain with the Devil, who gives him back his life, which could only be sustained by drinking the blood of others.
  • He has terrorized Transylvania over the course of centuries, creating and ordering monsters to attack and kill villagers.
    • Transformed some of them into vampires, such as his three brides, Marishka, Verona, and Aleera,
    • He also transforms others into werewolves, which deprives them of free will when they transform during full moons, so Dracula can use them against his enemies.
  • Over the next 400 years, he nearly wipes out all the members of his own family, the Valerious, who vowed to kill him and stop his evil.
    • At the start of the film, the only two Valerious left are the siblings Princess Anna and Prince Velkan.
  • He helps Dr. Victor Frankenstein to create his monster so he could use it as a living battery to give life to his own children since vampire children are born dead.
    • He ultimately plans to give life to his army of offspring so he and his children can conquer the world.
      • When Dr. Frankenstein realizes his true intentions and refuses to cooperate, Dracula bites off his throat and kills him.
  • He kidnapped King Boris Valerious, using him as a living battery to bring his own children to life. The experiment fails and it results in Boris being electrocuted to death.
  • He has Velkan infected by a grey werewolf (presumably Bela the Gypsy), turning him into the Wolf Man and sending him to kill villagers.
    • He allows his servant Igor to torture him.
    • He attempts to use Velkan as a living battery just like he had done to his father to give life to his own children, which results in Velkan being painfully electrocuted.
  • After the revival of his children is momentarily successful, he sends them and his two remaining brides to wipe out a small village and feed on its inhabitants.
    • This only fails because Velkan proves to be insufficient as a human battery and all the children who are revived die.
  • When he learns that Frankenstein's monster is still alive, he tries to kidnap him and use him as a living battery for his machine because this would give eternal life to his children.
  • He has Anna kidnapped and tries to bite her and turn her into a vampire against her will so she may become one of his new brides which fails because Van Helsing saves her on time.
  • It is shown that his summer palace is filled with people whom he has turned into vampires and now serve him, some of them being children.
  • He kidnaps Frankenstein's monster, straps him to his machine, and uses him as a living battery to give eternal life to his children, which causes immense pain to the monster from electrocuting.
    • It is made clear that if Dracula's thousands of children are revived, they are going to terrorize all of Transylvania like never before and eat countless people to satiate their hunger, with everyone being horrified at the prospect of this happening.
  • His actions ultimately lead to the extermination of the entire Valerious line because by the end of the film, Velkan is killed by Van Helsing because he attacks them as the Wolf Man while serving Dracula against his will and Anna is killed by Van Helsing after he transforms into a black werewolf.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Even though he says he has no heart and feels no love, it's demonstrated that he can care about others:
    • He cares about his children and wants to give them eternal life and appears to be a little saddened the first time when they die, due to Velkan being insufficient to sustain them.
    • While his brides are women he has turned into vampires and is willing to find new brides if they are killed, he does seem to care about them to an extent. When one of them, Marishka, is killed and Dracula feels her death, he wakes up and calls out her name in distress. After he snaps angrily at his two remaining brides and they cower in fear from him, he appears to regret his angry outburst directed at them and starts comforting them and tells them not to fear him and to come to him before they start kissing and acting affectionately to each other.
    • During his final confrontation with Van Helsing, he mentions that before Van Helsing killed him centuries ago and lost his memory, the two of them used to be very good friends. He makes multiple attempts to convince Van Helsing to join him, promising him that he would give him freedom and would restore his memory and doesn't appear to be angry that Van Helsing had killed him centuries prior, with nothing indicating it's pragmatic because Dracula has multiple opportunities to kill Van Helsing easily when he transforms into human back from a werewolf, but instead of trying to kill Van Helsing during these moments, Dracula tries to persuade him to join him.
