Cooper Adams, otherwise known by his alias as The Butcher is the main protagonist of the 2024 psychological horror/thriller film Trap.
Seemingly a devoted and attentive father who takes his daughter, Riley, to her favorite idol's concert, Cooper is a firefighter in Philadelphia who moonlights as a serial killer dubbed "The Butcher", killing innocent people to satisfy a dark urge inside him.
Throughout the film, the concert in question was actually a front to catch The Butcher, serving as the titular Trap to catch Cooper. Cooper has to navigate his way through said Trap, while making sure his identity and secrets are never revealed.
He was portrayed by Josh Hartnett.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- Throughout his life, he has kidnapped, killed and mutilated a total of 12 people before dumping their bodies in a trash bag, earning him the title of "The Butcher". While this may seem off-screen villainy at first, his kills are described vividly and one of the kills are even shown, with the victim's body being chopped up into 6 separate pieces. This makes it so that he doesn't suffer from Fridge Horror.
- Even before becoming an adult, Cooper was always "not normal" according to his mother and seemingly had those dark and murderous urges even during his childhood.
- Before the events of the film, he kidnapped a young man named Spencer and held him captive in an unknown area, intending to make him his 13th victim.
- After learning that Lady Raven's concert was a trap to catch Cooper, he begins to cause a distraction so carry out his plans of escaping the place. He does this by pushing an elderly woman down the stairs.
- Later, while impersonating a cook, he puts oil bottles in a deep fryer, causing it to explode on a nearby female employee's face and severely mutilating and burning her, just so he could get to the roof.
- He lies about Riley recovering from Leukemia to Lady Raven's uncle just so that Riley gets chosen to be Lady Raven's "Dreamer Girl", which would allow both her and Cooper backstage passes to escape safely.
- Upon realizing that the backstage still underwent a security check, Cooper took Lady Raven to a room and revealed his identity to her, demanding that she take him and Riley in her Limousine, threatening her that if she doesn't go through with it, he'd kill Spencer by releasing Carbon Monoxide gas in his room.
- Disguises himself as a SWAT Officer when Lady Raven escapes from his house and kidnaps her in her own limousine, intending to kill her in an abandoned warehouse.
- After he escapes from the police yet again, he goes back to his house to confront and kill his wife, Rachael, for tipping the police off about him.
- When he gets tased by three SWAT Officers, he tackles one of them and attempts to brutally kill him by gouging his eyes out.
- When he's taken away, he steals Riley's bicycle's spoke to break free from his handcuffs, and laughs to himself, implying that he escapes from police custody.
- He is not genuinely affable, as it is all merely a charismatic facade to blend in better. Any form of politeness and kindness is completely superficial on his part, and only for convenience's sake, as seen when he just wanted one of the employee, Jamie's ID Card and Passcode from.
- While he's clearly insane and deranged, he's more than smart enough to know better, and he shows a clear sadism in his actions throughout the film, proving that he has a moral agency.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He has a genuinely tragic background as when he was a child, he was always being abused by his mother for being "abnormal". While the true extent of this abuse isn't shown, it is clear that this all affects him to this day, as seen when he hallucinates her every now and then.
- While he subverts his care for his wife, he never once stopped caring for his two children, Riley and Logan, especially the former. He genuinely wanted her to be happy, rewarded her for getting good grades and often took her to Lady Raven's concerts, and her final scene consists of him embracing her. With Logan, he tells his son to be good for his mother when he's gone after the his actions come to light. In the end, he reveals to Rachael that he's angry with her because he can't see them anymore, which proves he still cares for his children.
