Soon come chaos. Chaos soon come.
~ Cletus Kasady’s most famous quote
When I get out of here and I will… there's gonna be carnage.
~ Cletus Kasady to Eddie Brock.

Cletus Kasady is a major antagonist in Sony's Spider-Man Universe, serving as the final antagonist of Venom and one of the two main antagonists (alongside Carnage) of its sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

He is a notorious and deranged serial killer who was locked away in San Quentin Prison, where reporter Eddie Brock interviewed him. However, Kasady eventually managed to break out of prison so he can unleash carnage upon San Francisco. He is also the second arch-nemesis of Eddie Brock.

He was portrayed by Woody Harrelso, who also played Colonel McCullough in War for the Planet of the Apes. As a child, he was portrayed by Jack Bandeira.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • In his childhood, he murdered his grandmother by pushing her down the stairs, his mother by electrocuting her while bathing, and even his own dog with a drill. He tried to do the same to his dad but he failed to do so, which lead him to be sent to St. Estes’ Home for Unwanted Children. Although they were abusive to him, it's unknown whether or not it would have made a difference, considering he killed his pet dog who was innocent.
  • He committed numerous crimes in his adulthood, such as mass murder, cannibalism, possibly rape, necrophilia, and torture, leading him to be sentenced to death.
  • When Eddie visited him in his prison, he claimed that when he got out, there would be complete carnage.
  • He bit down and tried to eat Eddie's hand when he visited him again, as well as guilt-tripping Eddie beforehand by taunting him about his past and blaming Eddie for his execution.
  • With the help of Carnage, he massacred the entire San Quentin prison, killing dozens, if not hundreds, of guards who were there, including eating the warden whole, escaping from prison and freeing the other inmates in the process too.
    • When one guard begged not to be killed because he had a family, he brutally and cruelly murdered him by shoving his tongue down his throat, likely not caring because of his abusive history with his family.
  • Does have comedic moments where tells jokes that are so funny that the audience that help laugh, but it doesn't brighten the mood because his humor is based around dark comedy, meaning his still taken deadly seriously in-universe.
  • He allowed Carnage to launch a random car into the ocean, killing the driver and possibly others in the car, also taking sadistic joy from it.
  • He killed a homeless man for his clothes.
  • He beat a store clerk to death just so he can use his computer and track down Shriek before stealing a man’s car to do so.
  • He slaughtered the entire Ravencroft Institute staff just so he can rescue Shriek.
  • He murdered the authorities who arrived to stop them after he rescued Shriek.
  • He and Shriek burnt St. Estes to the ground.
  • He kidnapped Detective Mulligan and Anne Weying just to goad Venom and Eddie to confront him.
  • He and Carnage attempted to kill Venom and Eddie when they arrive.
  • He nearly killed Dan after he saved Venom, only being stopped by Venom.
  • He tortured Eddie by trying to smother him with a plastic bag and hitting him with a hammer repeatedly when the symbiotes are disabled.
  • He planned to kill Anne only to completely break Eddie.
  • Eddie claims that when he and Carnage will wipe out the whole city when they are done with him and Venom.
  • While Cletus has several comedic moments, he is still taken seriously as a threat in-universe.
  • Despite having to compete with Riot, Carlton Drake, and Carnage, Cletus still stands out due to having lower resources than Riot and Drake and for having a higher kill count than Carnage.
    • Unlike the Green Goblin, he and Carnage don't have to compete with the Heinous Standards of the MCU multiverse due to dying at the end of their film without crossing over to the MCU universe, thus their actions are still enough for them to stand out as Near Pure Evil and Pure Evil, respectively.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He has a genuinely tragic backstory of being born in a dysfunctional family and being constantly abused by his parents and his grandmother, and then he was orphaned and humiliated again by all his companions from the orphanage, with Shriek being the only person in the one who took pity on him.
    • He even told Eddie in prison that all he ever wanted in the world was a family, states that no one ever came to help him from his abuse when he was just a "scared little boy", and in the moment of his death, he tells Eddie that all he wanted was his friendship, to which Eddie apologizes to him for everything that happened.
  • He loved Shriek deeply no matter how depraved he turned out to be, as he was heartbroken when they were separated, rushed to where she was when he escaped prison so he could rescue and marry her, and tried to stop Carnage from killing her.
  • He refused to kill the church priest and was genuinely upset when Carnage ate him.

Trivia[]

  • Cletus Kasady is the only villain of Sony's Spider-Man Universe to be Near Pure Evil.
  • In a concept art animatic, the prison break was meant to be much more unpleasant and would have given the movie an R rating, as Carnage & Cletus immediately after bonding they go on a rampage only this time they target not just guards and the warden, but prisoners too and in extremely brutal ways too as one prisoner took a saw to his face and some guards got ripped in half and last but not least Carnage instead of eating the Warden's head off, it stuffs it's tongue down the Wardens throat, ripping his flesh on the inside with spikes and making him explode from the inside and Cletus appears to revel in all of this. if this was in the film, Cletus would have been much worse but not to the point of being Pure Evil as he still loves Frances.
