The Chameleon is the main antagonist of Kung Fu Panda 4, the fourth installment in the Kung Fu Panda franchise.
She is an ambitious sorcerer who seeks to acquire Po's Staff of Wisdom to summon deceased Kung Fu warriors from the Spirit Realm, including Tai Lung, Lord Shen and Kai the Collector to gain their skills to become the most powerful Kung Fu master of all and conquer the world.
She was voiced by Viola Davis.
Her Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- She is implied to have murdered and cannibalized innocents in the past as a goose citizen stated that she is "A monster with an appetite of a thousand predators". She has also been implied to kidnap children during the nighttime by a bunny, it is unknown why but its possible she does this so that she can kill them and be feared across the land.
- She took over Juniper City, extorting money from the crime families far more than is actually necessary to show herself to be the more vicious villain.
- Upon taking Zhen in as her adoptive daughter, she subjected her to never-ending emotional abuse to make her be her most exploitable tool, and even admitted how quickly she would dispose of her should Zhen stop being useful to her.
- She wrecked a mine while posing as Tai Lung to sow panic.
- She forced Zhen to play on Po's trust and then capture him so she could acquire the Staff of Wisdom and copy his Kung Fu skills, and later bragged to Tai Lung about having stolen the staff.
- When Po escaped, she disguised herself as Zhen and threw him out of her tower to his near-death. She also responded very coldly to Zhen's pained reaction upon fearing Po had died simply saying someone always gets hurt and that nobody cares about Zhen's feelings.
- She summoned numerous deceased Kung Fu masters from the Spirit Realm, including Lord Shen, Scott the firebreathing dragon and Kai the Collector.
- While Shen and Kai deserved it, she did so to steal their powers and not out of any disgust for their crimes.
- Her method of stealing Kung Fu is shown to be painful for her victims, as they are seen yelling in agony while their powers are being stripped and physically weakened afterward.
- She closed the portal to the Spirit Realm to stop Tai Lung from returning home.
- Overall, she planned to use her armies to overrule Juniper City, the Valley of Peace and then the rest of China and potentially the world itself upon acquiring the skills of every Kung Fu master, with it being implied that billions of deaths will be involved.
- This could have even overshadowed Shen's plan to conquer China, judging by Po's vision of everything engulfed in flames.
- Unlike all the other main villains, she has no redeeming qualities at all nor any sympathetic moments, being just a selfish megalomaniac concerned solely for herself.
- While she treats her komodo dragon soldiers better than Zhen, her "third rule of the streets" that she enforces anywhere else implies she's only doing this to keep them on her side.
- While she has occasional comedic moments, her presence in the story is played completely seriously in which she ends up stealing the skills of the other villains and imprisoning them to show she is the bigger threat, and aside from Lord Shen, she is the only villain to not be played for slapstick comedy in the final battle.
- While she has a backstory of being rejected by Kung Fu masters due to her height, this is never once used to justify her actions (plus the fact that Shifu, Mantis, and Master Rooster are renowned Kung Fu masters despite being small suggests that she gave up on her dreams fairly quickly). It's also stated as an offhand comment and not given too much focus, unlike Lord Shen's past who, despite done many atrocities, is played for sympathy due to being insecure about his parents "not" loving him.
- Even when Po offered to help the Chameleon accomplish her old dreams, she rejects his offer and continues her plans of ruling the world.
- Furthermore she said that she wanted the respect and power from being a Kung Fu master implying that she never had any noble goals to begin with while also rejecting the core principles of kung fu.
- Even though her punishment of being dragged to the Spirit Realm and having her tongue being used as a jump rope by the other masters is harsh, it isn't played for sympathy because she absolutely deserved it for the crimes she committed against them.
What Prevents Her from Being Pure Evil?[]
- Ultimately, other than the single image of everything being on fire, the overall destruction that would be caused by the Chameleon's plans for conquest is left very vague, especially in comparison to the likes of Lord Shen, whose cannons are explicitly shown to endanger and even actually kill people onscreen while committing genocide against the pandas, making her plans rely on Fridge Horror.
- Some of her past crimes like her mass murder, cannibalism and kidnapping are off-screen and therefore also rely on Fridge Horror, as it is only mentioned by two minor characters and are merely implied.
Trivia[]
- The Chameleon is the second Near Pure Evil who appears as the main antagonist of a fourth film helped by Mike Mitchell from a DreamWorks Animation film series, the first being Rumpelstiltskin of Shrek Forever After.
- She is the only Kung Fu Panda Near Pure Evil to have no morality based preventions.
