I've been out before, but they always put me back. They always put us back inside. There is nowhere for us to hide here. There is nowhere to go, when we look like this. But if we looked like you, then we could hide. If we looked like you, then we would have somewhere to go.
~ Circus Baby as Ennard explaining her motives to Michael.
You don’t understand. You killed my family. You Americans cheered when we lost. We lost our homes. We lost our families. You nuked us. The nuke took my wife. The nuke took my kids. Hiroshima was our home. […] You took everything from me, so I decided to return peace by getting rid of the people who wronged us.
~ The Man in the Suit explaining his hatred for the Americans in Mailed Message.
You didn’t write about the part where Cletus was abused by Mommy, Daddy and Granny! You didn’t tell the world how he was a scared little boy that no one cared about and no one came to save! You never asked yourself why!
~ Cletus Kasady explaining how much he was affected by his past.

Villains who suffered a genuine tragedy, but since the crimes they committed are unacceptable, the extent of their evil almost outweighs it (e.g. Thanos, Makima, Jason Voorhees (remake), Michael Myers, Victor Crowley, The Governor (TV), Johan Liebert, Bane, Kingpin, Evil Morty, The Tortured One, Darth Nihilus, Sigma, Oh Sangwoo, Ellen, and Barty Crouch Jr.). This also includes if whether the tragedy excuses the villains' actions or not is very debatable. Although, there are occasions where their tragedy still strongly holds up despite everything they've done (e.g. Kazuya Mishima, Skull Face, Lisa Simpson (Ei8ht), John Doe, Davoth, General Grievous, Erik Killmonger, General Shepherd, The Trapper, Charles F. Muntz, Circus Baby, Lady Arkham, Penguin, Simon Laurent, CatNap, Joseph, Brian Moser, Imhotep, Gerald Robotnik (SCU) and The Man in the Suit).

In a couple of cases, it's their only prevention from them being Pure Evil (e.g. Ellen, Oh Sangwoo, Alice, and Monaca Towa) as the latter category can never have tragic villains even if they did suffer a genuine tragedy at some point in their lives.

For obvious reasons, all villains under this category should be under Sympathetic and often should be under Debased. However, extremely rare exceptions exist if they stayed with the same amount of sympathy from the start of their tragedies to end due to already being evil (e.g. Kingpin, Pet Shop, Imhotep and White Death).

This category applies only if the villain's tragedy is recognized as a tragedy. Villains whose tragedy doesn't hold up and whose actions aren’t caused by their tragedy should go to Fake Tragic instead.

Their good counterparts are Tragic Near Pure Good Heroes.
