I LIVE TO SERVE OUR ANGEL OF SALVATION.
~ A message left by CatNap.
The Prototype... will save us.
~ CatNap foreboding the Hour of Joy to Leith Pierre.

Theodore Grambell, better known as Experiment-1188: CatNap, is the secondary antagonist of the Poppy Playtime franchise, serving as the main antagonist of the first game's third chapter, Deep Sleep.

He is a monstrous life-sized Toy recreation or version of one of the members of Playtime CO.'s "Smiling Critters" series of toys. In reality, he is an orphaned child that was experimented on as part of the Bigger Bodies Initiative to serve as the protector of Playcare, the company's on-site orphanage. CatNap is completely loyal to the Prototype due to him saving his life when he was still human, worshipping him like a god and killing the "heretics" who don't follow him.

As a human, he is modeled after the games' sound designer Ben Rooker, and as CatNap, he was voiced by an uncredited Neil Ross, who also voiced the alternate Green Goblin in Spider-Man: The Animated Series, the Cyclops in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie and Grandfather in Codename: Kids Next Door: Operation: Z.E.R.O.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • When he was transformed into CatNap via the Bigger Bodies Initiative by Harley Sawyer, he started gassing the other children in the Playcare to sleep so the scientists would have an easier time experimenting on them, just like he was made to do. His use of the Poppy Gas would cause many children, including Marie Payne (who eventually became Mommy Long Legs) to experience horrible nightmares and hallucinations.
    • In Marie's case, he was likely the "colorless monster" she saw in her nightmares, considering that during the final battle, the player sees him as a contorted, colorless version of himself.
  • According to the Poppy Playtime Orientation Notebook, he had brutally murdered six workers in a failed escape attempt even before the Hour of Joy.
  • He directly assisted the Prototype in orchestrating the Hour of Joy on August 8th, 1995, where they and the other Toys slaughtered the entirety of Playtime CO. before devouring the bodies. As shown in the official music video "Sleep Well", CatNap has actively convinced and indoctrinated Toys into joining the massacre, which makes him an important member of the operation instead of a simple follower like the others.
    • Additionally, Poppy states even the innocents weren't spared during the massacre and it was a "senseless slaughter" that didn't fix anything, proving CatNap isn't in any way an anti-villain or extremist.
  • After taking over Playcare, he proceeded to make it into his Prototype-worshipping "church" and hunting ground, where any Toy that doesn't follow the Prototype is deemed a "heretic" and murdered, and Playtime CO. is littered with corpses of dead toys. CatNap's slaughter went so far that the Mini-Smiling Critters began following him in fear for their lives, making him responsible for their crimes. Additionally, with it being stated CatNap toys with his victims, they were likely all tormented and tortured before death, similar to DogDay.
    • Additionally, he has also made a shrine for the Prototype out of the corpses of several toys and an employee.
  • He slaughtered the other large Smiling Critters for trying to fight the Prototype, with the only known survivor being DogDay, who was split in half and crucified, forcing him to spend his days in a fate worse than death. Additionally, CatNap would be indirectly responsible for the Mini Smiling Critters entering his body and using him as a skinsuit.
  • He imprisoned Playcare's teachers at the school, where he waited until only one of them, Miss Delight, was left alive after becoming a mentally broken shell and cannibalizing her sisters. They would afterward make a deal where Miss Delight reports everything she sees to CatNap and the Prototype.
  • When the Protagonist crashed the train going into Playcare, CatNap dragged them into a compactor with the intent to kill them.
  • He causes the Protagonist to inhale the Poppy Gas, which results in them suffering a hallucination of being chased by a twisted version of Huggy Wuggy.
  • He knocks out the Protagonist and makes them inhale the Poppy Gas once they get one of the batteries for the generator, which causes them to have another nightmare where they're once again accused by Poppy of letting countless kids suffer during their time working at the factory.
  • He threatens the protagonist to leave Playcare or else he would kill him by himself.
  • He tries to kill the Protagonist one final time before dying.
  • While he only has a few lines, he’s characterized enough as a sadistic fanatic who kills anyone who dares to defy the Prototype, as shown in one tape when he taunts Leith Pierre that everyone will die by saying that the Prototype will "save the Toys".
  • While Poppy Playtime has a massive Heinous Standard due to every Toy participating in the slaughter of hundreds, CatNap still stands out due to being a major player in the Hour of Joy in addition to his other brutal crimes.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He has a genuinely tragic backstory. He was a lonely orphan whose only friend was the Prototype, who convinced him to team up so they could escape the Playtime CO. factory only to be severely injured after accidentally electrocuting himself with a green GrabPack hand, surviving because the Prototype brought him to Playtime's scientists. He would then be forcibly transformed into a monstrous recreation of the CatNap cartoon character, and he would spend four years being mistreated by the workers at Playtime. It is played with sympathy (for instance, he can be seen looking at a drawing of his human self in the tie-in music video) and this all explains why CatNap is now a monstrous fanatic of the Prototype, as he was the one and only person who was there for him.
  • He is very loyal towards the Prototype for being his only friend (reinforced further in the official music video "Sleep Well", where one scene shows the Prototype comforting him about his human past), saving his life after he was electrocuted, and then freeing the Toys from Playtime's abuse. It's mentioned that, freshly after he was transformed into a toy, he followed the Prototype around "like a lost puppy". Because of this, CatNap views him as a deity and "superhero" who deserves to be adored for his actions. Additionally, he seemingly allows the Prototype to kill him in his final moments, though it's ambiguous just what he was expecting his master to do to him.
  • He has a minor "Pet the Dog" moment where he refused to tell Miss Delight where Playcare's children were being hidden after the Hour of Joy, knowing she would try to kill them all. There is currently no known pragmatic motive for this.

Trivia[]

  • Him and DogDay are, fittingly enough, morally opposite due to the latter being Near Pure Good.
    • Coincidentally, the color schemes of the wikis they are on are almost the same as their own colors (Yellow and Orange for the NPG wiki and DogDay and Purple for the NPE wiki and CatNap)
  • Some theorize that the Prototype used a brainwashing ability to make Theo loyal to him and influenced most of his decisions. If this is confirmed, CatNap would not qualify as Near Pure Evil due to having no control over his actions.
