Castor Troy is the main antagonist of the 1997 sci-fi action-thriller film Face/Off.
He is a terrorist-for-hire who plans to stage a bombing in Los Angeles with the help of his brother Pollux, with a price tag of $10 million. However, his plans are hindered when his archenemy, FBI Deputy Director Sean Archer, knocks him into a coma and switches faces with him to thwart the bombing.
As his original self, he was portrayed by Nicolas Cage. While masquerading as Sean Archer, he was portrayed by John Travolta.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
In general[]
- Although Castor (and Pollux) is hinted to have a "traumatic childhood", neither he nor Pollux are ever treated sympathetically, and whatever unspecified trauma that had afflicted the brothers (if one even exists; likely so, by their love for each other and indifference to everyone else), he and Pollux have clearly long since surpassed any tragedy that may or may not exist.
- While he has comedic moments, they don't detract from his villainy, and in some cases, they just enhance it.
- He is in overall a gleefully sadistic and evil sociopath who couldn't care less about the lives of anyone who isn't his or his brother.
Background[]
- He tried to shoot and kill Sean Archer, only to kill his son by mistake.
- While he seemed to be shocked at this, it's more likely that he was stunned at what's transpired and failing to kill Sean; this is made evident by his bored expression visiting Michael's grave under the guise of Sean with Eve whilst she weeps, and crumpling a photo of Michael that Sean gave him while giving a smug smile.
- He bombed the Pacific Stock Exchange, murdered the Croatian ambassador, and bombed the car of an informant who had evidence of his crimes.
- Whilst this is off-screen villainy, it is noted by the FBI, and his actions in the film show he is fully capable of these things, and his other onscreen actions ensures he passes the moral event horizon anyway.
Events of Face/Off[]
- He planted a bomb in the Los Angeles Convention Center to blow up Los Angeles on the day three Supreme Court justices were going to appear at the convention, which he described as a "biblical plague".
- While doing this, he groped one of the choir girls by grabbing her rear while she was singing.
- He shot FBI agent Winters who was undercover on the plane just to spite Sean, callously shoving her onto the runway.
- He tried to kill Sean on his plane, before killing the plane pilot just because he didn't fly the plane away from the police and Sean, even though the engine was out.
- He shot at the police after the plane crashed, killing six of them while causing another one to lose his ear, before trying to kill Sean again.
- He tried to convince Sean to join his side, and when that failed, spitefully tried to kill him while mocking his family.
- After waking up and realizing Sean switched their faces to find out where the bomb is, he had Dr. Walsh give him Sean's face, before killing him and everybody who knew about the procedure.
- He revealed himself to Sean, mocking him for the fact he will be in prison for hundreds of years now that all evidence that Sean is in Castor's body is destroyed, and saying that he will get to sleep with Sean's wife.
- He got close to Sean's family only to spite Sean, and cared absolutely nothing for them:
- An example of this is acting as a corruptive influence on Jamie; whilst saving Jamie from being raped to get on her good side, he had also encouraged her to smoke and gifted her a knife with instruction on using it.
- Ironically, she used it on him, fittingly and symbolically spurning the false father figure.
- That he had sex with Eve whilst impersonating Sean makes him guilty of rape by deception.
- An example of this is acting as a corruptive influence on Jamie; whilst saving Jamie from being raped to get on her good side, he had also encouraged her to smoke and gifted her a knife with instruction on using it.
- He got Pollux freed from prison while pretending to be Sean.
- While he did defuse the bomb, this was only for engineered heroics.
- After discovering Sean escaped his prison, he ordered a raid on his headquarters to kill Sean, which killed several FBI members and several of Troy's gang, including Sasha's brother and Pollux. Troy only giggled gleefully at the carnage.
- He tried to shoot Sasha and Adam - a child, and not that Troy was aware of it, his son - only for Sasha's brother to take the bullet. Troy is unmoved by this.
- He tried to convince Sean to switch bodies back and tried to kill him when he refused.
- He shot an FBI agent just because the FBI agent didn't know why he was upset at Pollux's death.
- When his superior Victor Lazarro rightfully chastised him for his "gestapo" tactics of raiding and killing people, as well as his strange behaviour recently, he vents his anger over Pollux's death by judiciously attacking his throat and chest to make his death look like a heart attack.
- He even spitefully confesses that he is Castor Troy beforehand, informing him that he "isn't going to like" his confession.
- He tried to kill Sean when he thought Eve was with him.
- After the funeral, he tried to shoot and kill Sean while having Eve held at gunpoint and Jamie brought to the funeral parlour.
- He tried to shoot Eve only to end up shooting Sasha instead, before trying to kill Sean as well. Troy is predictably remorseless.
- He tricked Jamie into shooting Sean by making her think that Sean was Castor.
- He tried to shoot Jamie after licking her face, saying that he's "going to find out what's in papa's bag".
- He killed two policemen to steal their guns before killing a boat driver to take his boat.
- He shot at Sean and caused a huge explosion that put many people's lives in danger.
- When Sean chased him with a boat, he tried to crash it and killed many policemen.
- When Sean jumped on his boat, he tried to kill him again.
- When Sean had him at gunpoint, he faked remorse for his deeds in order to take Sean's gun and kill him, before trying to cut his face just to spite Sean.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- Despite his deranged and sociopathic disposition, he cares for his brother Pollux, as he cried when he died and even considered killing himself to be with him, shooting an FBI agent just because he mocked Pollux's death.
Trivia[]
- While Castor Troy is currently Near Pure Evil, there's a chance this may change if he returns in the upcoming Face/Off sequel, for which Nicolas Cage has been in talks to return.
