Captain Gutt is the main antagonist of Blue Sky's 7th animated feature film Ice Age: Continental Drift, the fourth installment of the Ice Age franchise.
He is a Gigantopithecus who proclaims himself as "Master of the Seas" and oversees a crew of fellow pirates. He is also Shira's former boss and Manny's arch-nemesis.
He was voiced by Peter Dinklage, who also played Bolivar Trask in X-Men: Days of Future Past.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- He is shown to be a bad boss to his own crew, whom he threatens and frequently abuses (especially Flynn and later Shira).
- While he has few comedic moments, they don't detract from his heinousness and completely disappear after he reveals his cruel personality. As the film progresses, he quickly becomes more dangerous and hated by all other characters, and is taken completely seriously, and any comedic moments he may have had after his reveal were just signals of how cruel he is.
- While he has an understandable reason for hating Manny because he destroyed his ship and bounty and stole the replacements, it doesn't hold up as he attempted to kill his family, their friends and surely the entire population of the continent just for spitting him. Even after he surrendered himself to him. He also refused to admit that it is his fault because Manny defended himself against him. Not only that, but he was already a cruel pirate before losing his ships.
- While it's hinted that he has a tragic backstory from being neglected by his own parents which made him to become a pirate, he never mentioned it, meaning it probably didn't have an effect on his villainy.
- While all other Ice Age villains are bog-standard, have redeeming qualities, and/or detracting comedic moments, Gutt has neither of those and stands out as the most evil villain of the franchise. Even Soto, who is much more evil than other villains, cared for his deceased saber-toothed tigers.
- While he did supposedly show attraction to a blonde female ape that the sirens posed as, it could've been out of lust instead of genuine love. The Sirens could have also been messing with his head.
- While Gavin and Orson are way more heinous, Gutt had fewer resources than them as Gavin had access to an asteroid that would destroy the world, and Orson had an entire army of raptors which would kill all mammal life in dinosaur world. While Gutt only had himself and his pirate crew, and still he succeeded to capture an entire population with his resources. He also stands out for having some (at least implied) successful kills and being the first Ice Age villain who tries to commit mass murders on-screen.
- Moreover, Gavin redeemed himself because he takes care of his family and after understanding that they won't survive the asteroid impact. It makes Gutt even worse because he refused redemption and never had positive traits.
- Also, Orson is very incompetent whereas Gutt, even alone, still is dangerous because he has an out of common physical strength.
- His personal villainy against Manny is unique because Gavin and Orson were never foes with Manny, his family and their friends, and they were mainly focused on Buck.
Background[]
- It is implied that he has killed hundreds of animals by gutting them in the past, hence his name.
- The skulls and bones on his ship highly implied that he has committed numerous murders. It shows how much Gutt takes pride in his cruelty.
- Although it is not confirmed, it is more probable that the skulls belong to his victims because he reveals he looted their food. It is shown by great quantity of fruits on his ship, meaning he surely committed numerous crimes.
- Due to Shira's horrified reaction when he wants a tiger's skin as trophy, it suggests he collected the skulls of his victims as trophies.
Ice Age: Continental Drift[]
- He captured many animals who were lost in the sea (including Scrat) and used them as toys for him and his crew to sadistically play with in games that are very dangerous for them, basically enslaving them to his and his crew's will.
- While he offers Manny, Sid, and Diego to join him, it was merely because he see them useful to him, also it's worth nothing that he orders to execute them once they refuse.
- When a rat taunted Gutt right after Granny called him a nice monkey, Gutt grabbed the rat and threw him to the ocean where he would most certainly drown.
- When Sid didn't understand how his claws got him his name, he gave a "playful" demonstration as to how while he slowly attempted to kill him by impaling him from his chin.
- He tricked Granny into willingly accepting her execution by drowning due to her obliviousness, before planning on executing the rest.
- He swore to kill Manny at all costs when he destroyed the ship during the fight whereas Manny acted in self-defense.
- Although Scrat was shown to survive during the sinking of Gutt's first ship, the other captured animals on the ship were never shown to survive, making a bad implication that all of them had drowned.
- Even if unintentionally, Gutt never shown any concern of what would have been of them anyways, only focused to get his revenge on Manny and rebuild everything.
- He coldly left Shira behind to drown despite her being his first mate.
- According to Diego, Gutt never even bothered to send out any search party for Shira, who was in the custody of Manny, Diego, and Sid, confirming that he never cared about her.
- Even Flynn protested against that and, in return, Gutt threatens them if they insist.
- When Gupta proposes a peace with the protagonists, he immediately refuses, confirming his obsession to kill Manny and his choice to stay evil forever.
- He enslaved and abused a group of hyraxes into doing his bidding and creating a new ship, threatening to "keelhaul" them if they refused. Even his own crew expressed disdain towards this.
- He surely wanted the slaves die in captivity once they were no more useful, given that he let them in jail when he was about to leave the island.
- He punished Shira when she revealed that she was unable to kill Manny.
- He also swears her that he will kill her if she fails again.
- Right after his talk with Shira, he replaces her with Squint to be his new first mate.
- He and his crew tried to kill freed hyraxes after seeing a fake Manny with them, but without any success. When he realized that Manny was fake and saw the protagonists fleeing with his ship, he is more concerned to kill Manny than to recover his ship.
- After losing his ship, he doesn't abandon at all his plots against Manny and swears to kill him and everyone he loves.
- While he calls on a pair of narwhals to help him capture Manny and his friends, he doesn't seem to view them any more than pawns.
- He tells Shira that he will have a tiger's skin as a trophy, not caring if it's either her skin or Diego's skin, or both. This finally clued Shira in that Gutt never cared for her, resulting in her redeeming herself by joining the protagonists.
- He destroyed the Land Bridge, leading to the entire population of the continent to be almost condemned to drowning. Even with the possibility he doesn't know if it caused deaths, he doesn't care because he knows they are friends with Manny and his family.
- He captured Manny's family out of spite.
- Attempted to kill Manny, Diego, Sid, Granny, Shira, Ellie, Peaches, Louis, Crash, and Eddie during their final confrontation.
- Though he seemingly demonstrates some measure of honor, as he agrees to give Louis a weapon when the latter challenges him to a duel, it was only because he found it amusing due to his small size. This actually makes it dishonorable. His sarcastic remark on bravery suggests he thinks of it as little more than a sentiment that leads one into a hopeless situation. This also infers that Gutt fully embraces his own cowardly bullying nature, making him even worse.
- Even when his crew was ejected overboard, he was still determined to kill Manny and his family. He would have succeeded in killing Ellie by gutting her if Peaches didn't strike Gutt in time. Sometime later, he attacks Manny once again, refusing to let go of his hatred against him.
- Even if his fate and death of being eaten alive by sirens is horrible, he fully deserves it for his crimes and all those he wanted to commit.
- Even before that, his crew didn't mourn him when they thought he was dead (although, they were all dead besides Squint and Flynn before Gutt has died).
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He suffers from Fridge Horror, as the film doesn't make it explicitly clear if the bones on his ship are from his past kills or if he just found them and decided to use them for weapons and decorations.
Trivia[]
- He and Soto are the only Ice Age villains to be Near Pure Evil, as other Ice Age villains are either too comedic, fail the Heinous Standards and/or have too many redeeming qualities.

- He is one of the 3 villains on this wiki to be from a 4th installment of a computer animated film series, alongside Rumpelstiltskin and the Chameleon. He is also the only one not to be from DreamWorks. Coincidentally, all these three villains each only have one prevention from being Pure Evil.
