His Evil Ranking
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?
- He killed many animals by gutting them in the past, hence his name.
- The skulls and bones on his ship highly implied that he has committed mass murders. It proves that Gutt is totally proud of his cruelty.
- Although it is not confirmed, it is more probable that the skulls belong to his victims because he reveals he looted their food. It is shown by great quantity of fruits on his ship, meaning he surely committed numerous crimes.
- He doesn’t care for anyone but himself, even his own crew, whom he threatens and frequently abuses (especially Flynn and later Shira).
- He captured many animals who were lost in the seas (including Scrat) and used them as toys for him and his crew to sadistically play with in games that are very dangerous for them, basically enslaving them to his and his crew's will.
- While he offers Manny, Sid and Diego to join him, it was merely because he see them useful to him, also it's worth nothing that he orders to execute them once they refuse.
- When a opossum taunted Gutt right after Granny called him a nice monkey, Gutt grabbed the opossum and threw him to the ocean, killing him.
- When Sid didn't understand how his claws got him his name, he gave a "playful" demonstration as to how while he slowly attempted to kill him by impaling him from his chin.
- He manipulated Granny into willingly accepting her execution by drowning due to her obliviousness, before planning on executing the rest.
- He swore to kill Manny at all costs when he destroyed the ship during the fight whereas Manny acted in self-defense.
- He coldly left Shira behind to drown despite her being his first mate.
- According to Diego, Gutt never even bothered to send out any search party for Shira, who was in the custody of Manny, Diego, and Sid, confirming that he never cared about her.
- When Gupta proposes a peace with the protagonists, he immediately refuses, confirming his obsession to kill Manny and his choice to stay evil forever.
- He enslaved and abused a group of hyraxes into doing his bidding and creating a new ship, threatening to "keelhaul" them if they refused. Even his own crew expressed disdain towards this.
- He punished Shira when she revealed that she was unable to kill Manny.
- He also swears her that he will kill her if she fails again.
- Right after his talk with Shira, he replaces her with Squint to be his new first mate.
- He and his crew tried to kill freed hyraxes after seeing a fake Manny with them, but without any success. When he realized that Manny was fake and saw the protagonists fleeing with his ship, he is more concerned to kill Manny than to recover his ship.
- After losing his ship, he doesn't abandon at all his plots against Manny and swears to kill him and everyone he loves.
- He tells Shira that he will have a tiger's skin as trophy, not caring if it's either her or Diego's skin, or both. This finally clued Shira in that Gutt never cared for her, resulting in her redeeming herself by joining the protagonists.
- He captured Manny's family as well as all the population of what is left of their home island out of spite for their association with Manny and his family and the herd, surely intending to kill all of them later, which would mean he was attempting a populicide.
- Attempted to kill Manny, Diego, Sid, Granny, Shira, Ellie, Peaches, Louis, Crash and Eddie during their final confrontation.
- Though he seemingly demonstrates some measure of honor, as he agrees to give Louis a weapon when the latter challenges him to a duel, it was only because he found it amusing due to his small size, which actually makes it dishonorable. His sarcastic remark on bravery suggests he thinks of it as little more than a sentiment that leads one into a hopeless situation. This also infers that Gutt fully embraces his own cowardly bullying nature, making him even worse.
- Even when his crew was ejected overboard, he was still determined to kill Manny and his family. He would have succeeded in killing Ellie by gutting her if Peaches didn't strike Gutt in time. Sometime later, he attacks Manny once again, refusing to let go of his hatred against him.
- While he has few comedic moments, not only do they not detract from his heinousness, but they completely disappear after he reveals his cruel personality. As the film progresses, he gradually becomes more terrifying and much more hated.
- While he has an understandable reason for hating Manny because he destroyed his ship and bounty and stole the replacements, it doesn't hold up as he attempted to kill his family and the herd (and possibly an entire population) just for spiting him even after he surrendered himself to him. He also refused to admit that it is his fault because Manny isn't pushed around against him.
- While it's hinted that he has a tragic backstory from being neglected by his own parents which made him to become a pirate, that doesn't hold up either as he never mentioned it and it never excuse his actions, meaning it probably had no effect on his villainy.
- While other Ice Age villains are standard evils and/or have redeeming qualities, Gutt has neither of those and stands out to be the darkest villain of the franchise.
- Even if being eaten alive by the sirens was a horrible way to die, he deserved it at 100% due to his crimes and all those he wanted to commit.
- While some could argue he fails the heinous standards to Gavin, he had access to an asteroid that would destroy the world, while Gutt didn't have or about it, he also stands out for having some (at least implied) successful kills and being the first Ice Age villain who tries to commit a mass murder at screen.
- Moreover, Gavin redeemed himself because he takes care of his family and after understanding that they won't survive to asteroid's impact. It makes Gutt even worse because he refused redemption and never had positive traits.
- While Orson also tried to do worse, Gutt had fewer resources than Orson, as Orson had an army of raptors which would kill all mammal life, while Gutt only had himself and his pirate crew and still he succeded to capture an entire population with his resources.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?
- He suffers from off-screen villainy as the film doesn't make it explicitly clear if the bones on his ship are from his past kills or if he just found them and decided to use them for weapons and decorations. However, given that Gutt got his name by killing numerous animals and gutting them could imply that it's definitely the former case, making this a minor prevention.
