| “ | You see, under the laws of Chickasaw County, Broomhilda here is my property... and I can choose to do with MY PROPERTY... WHATEVER I SO DESIRE! | „ |
| ~ Calvin Candie |
Calvin J. Candie is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Stephen) of Quentin Tarantino's 2012 western drama film Django Unchained.
He is the ruthless owner of the Candyland plantation as well as a monstrous slave owner. Assisted by his right-hand Stephen, Candie employs most for the African American men under his employment to either work at his house or fight to the death for his own amusement, willing to kill anyone who dares trying to escape.
He was portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- He is the owner of Candieland, the fourth largest slave plantation in Mississippi, and often enjoys abusing them.
- Bought Django Freeman's wife Broomhilda.
- Hosting Mandingo fights, which force his slaves to fight to death for money, taking a big enjoying these fights.
- Had his dogs brutally tear apart one of his slaves, D'Artagnan, after he refused to fight again.
- He killed his sister's lover, suggesting he has an incestuous relationship with her.
- After discovering that both Dr. King Schultz and Django tried to trick him to get Broomhilda back, he threatened to destroy Broomhilda's skull with a hammer and kill Schultz and Django if they didn't pay him $12,000 for Broomhilda's freedom and thus prove his point of phrenology.
- After he got exactly what he wanted, in a petty attempt to rub his victory in Schultz's face he asks him to shake his hand to conclude the deal, and threatened to have his men kill Django and Broomhilda if he didn't shake his hand.
- His death caused Dr. King Schultz to be murdered after he shot him in the chest for refusing to shake his hand and caused both Django and Broomhilda to be in danger.
- Although he treats Stephen better than most slaves and gives him special privileges, it’s only because Stephen is a useful asset who facilitates his sadistic desires. There’s nothing that indicates Calvin actually values him as an individual as opposed to a slave.
- While he does have some comedic moments, they only highlight how sadistic he is.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He genuinely cares about his sister Lara as shown when he asked her to leave dinner before confronting Dr. King Schultz over his deception so she would be spared from viewing any hostility.
