Cala Maria is a major antagonist in SonicDestroyer12's Cuphead Backstories.
She is a gorgon who sunk ships and consumed their souls. Despite this, she despised her appearance and, upon encountering the Devil, made a deal to become beautiful.

What Makes Her Close To Being Pure Evil?[]
- She attacks ships, consuming the souls of pirates for no particular reason, and traps their souls in a fate worse than death.
- What makes this worse is that she's shown spitting out their souls at Cuphead during the boss fight, using them as attacks.
- When the Devil confronts her and offers her beauty in exchange for her soul, Cala makes a deal but welches out on him by running off with her soul contract as due to Cala Maria having consumed the souls of many pirates, she didn't use her actual soul for the deal.
- Is willing to attack Cuphead and Mugman when they confront her, albeit this is more understandable given they are there for her soul contract. Unlike the rest of the debtors who while flawed, aren't villainous, Cala Maria was already evil prior.
- Her Death Screens show she can be sadistic as she mocks Cuphead and Mugman's efforts when they fail to defeat her.
- While Cala does celebrate with the other debtors after Cuphead and Mugman get rid of the contracts, this is not redemption as there is no indication Cala regrets any of her actions.
- There is no evidence Cala cares for the sea creatures she uses to fight and if anything, she uses them as tools to fight against the Cuphead brother's.
- Cala Maria passes the heinous standard as the other debtors aren't truly evil, and her victims being trapped in a fate worse than death allows her to compete with the Devil.
What Prevents Her From Being Pure Evil?[]
- Cala Maria has a sympathetic backstory, as the whole reason she made a deal with the Devil was that she found herself utterly hideous as she was constantly reminded of her appearance through the ocean's reflection and wasn't happy with her life prior.
- Cala Maria respects Cuphead and Mugman for freeing her as at the end of the game, she will show up with the other debtors to celebrate being free of the Devil. Whilst this is not an action of redemption as she's not shown to regret her actions, she does seem to at least respect them.
