I prefer the term eccentric, but yeah, I guess you could say I'm a little nutty
~ Brenda Bates to her attempted victim Natalie.

Brenda Bates is the main antagonist of the 1998 slasher film Urban Legend.

She is a young woman who lost her boyfriend David Evans in a car accident caused by the reckless driving of college girls. As such, Bates vowed vengeance by becoming a serial killer hellbent on causing misery and destruction whilst having a theme for urban legends.

She was portrayed by Rebecca Gayheart, with her in-costume scenes being played by Matt Biram.

Her Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • After her boyfriend David is killed in a car accident, Brenda enrolls in school to get her revenge and becomes friends with Natalie.
  • Kills Michelle, the girl who drove the car, by decapitating her with an axe.
  • She then kills Damon, who was urinating near her when she was disguised as the hookman, hanging him from a tree.
  • When Natalie spots Damon's corpse, Brenda has Reece come over, making Natalie believe Damon is playing a prank on her to ward off suspicion.
  • Brenda strangles Natalie's other roommate, Tosh, and uses his blood to write a message on the wall.
  • She murders Dean and covers Professor William Nexler with blood to frame him for the murders she committed to convince Paul, who was investigating the murders that he was the killer as he was the only survivor of the previous massacre at the school.
  • Later at a party, Brenda takes Parker's dog, microwaving the dog alive before killing Parker himself in the bathroom by forcing chemicals and poprocks down his throat.
  • She then proceeds to kill Sasha during her talkshow.
  • Brenda tries to frame Professor William for the murders but she decides to kill him later and puts his mutilated corpse on Paul's jeep in an effort to frame him.
  • She intentionally ditches Natalie in order to make her think Paul is the killer when they run off and chases Natalie in Paul's jeep whilst Natalie was riding in the Janitor's car, the car crashes and whilst Natalie and Brenda survives, the Janitor dies.
  • When Natalie escapes the scene, Brenda screams and Natalie walks in and sees her friend's dead bodies as well as Brenda's 'dead' body, only for Brenda to reveal she's alive and that she's the killer and plans to take Natalie's kidney after revealing her motive for killing people was because of her boyfriend's death. However, before Brenda can follow through, Reese rushes in to ruin her plans, Natalie managing to shoot Brenda whilst Natalie, Reese and Paul escape.
  • When they try and escape, Brenda tries to kill them one last time, but Paul crashes the car, causing Brenda to fall into the river, allowing them to escape.
  • Whilst Brenda does fall in the river, she's later revealed to be alive in another movie, Urban Legends: Final Cut, where she tells Professor Solomon that they aren't so different whilst in a nurse disguise, thus making her a Karma Houdini as despite the hero's evading her, Brenda ultimately faces no consequences for her actions and is free to terrorize the populace.
  • Whilst she is mentally unstable, Brenda can distinguish right and wrong. Whilst she does express interest in Paul, given she's more than willing to try killing him, it's likely just obsession.

What Prevents Her from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Despite Brenda's heinous actions, she is a tragic villain, as Brenda's motivation is the death her old boyfriend, David Evans, who was killed in a car accident caused by two girls pulling a prank on him, thus causing Brenda to fall into villainy in an effort to avenge him. That said, she goes way too far, and kills a bunch of innocent people who didn't have anything to do with his death, so it's a minor prevention.
  • Brenda loved David and as mentioned above, he is her reason for villainy and still continues to care for him despite her vile actions.
