Brauner is the central antagonist of the 2006 platform video game Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. He is a former artist who became a vampire following World War I and attempts to resurrect the Castlevania to take it over in order to destroy all of humanity.
He was voiced by Hisao Egawa in the Japanese version, and Jamieson Price in the English version.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- Upon realizing his daughters died during World War 1, he declared war on all of humanity in order to get revenge for his daughter's deaths.
- Soon after the deaths of his daughters, he used the souls from the deceased victims of World War 2 to bring the Castlevania, and used paintings so Dracula wouldn't come back in order to have control of the castle.
- He ambushed and killed Eric Lecarde when he went to investigate the castle.
- When he sees Eric Lecarde's daughters, Stella and Loretta, he brainwashes them due to believing they were the blood reincarnation of his daughters, by making them vampires alongside having them think he is their father.
- When Jonathan and Charlotte manage to cure Eric Lecarde's daughters from vampirism, Brauner gets very mad at them, and tries killing them once Jonathan points out how pathetic it is that he took someone else's daughters away from them and manipulated them due to being unable to accept what happened to his daughters.
- While he does save his "daughters" Stella and Loretta from Jonathan and Charlotte in the game's bad ending, which could be used to make him even more tragic and protective, the bad ending is non canon, meaning this doesn't happen.
- While Dracula generally did a lot more than Brauner alongside also attempting to destroy humanity, that was due to him being in way more games, being around for far more years, and having more minions to assist him in his goals.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He has a tragic backstory of losing his daughters to World War 1, which warped his mindset to believe that humanity was inherently evil due to causing lots of death and destruction, made him lose some of his sanity, and generally served as the motivation behind his actions. Given how Jonathan and Charlotte both consistently go against his tragedy though, as well as him hypocritically taking away someone else's daughters as a replacement right in front of them, this is a minor prevention.
- He cared for his daughters greatly, being upset and driven insane by their deaths, and upon convincing himself that Stella and Loretta were his daughters due to soul relations, he cares for them too, as he tries to keep them out of harms way, which is why he orders them not to fight Jonathan and Charlotte.
- He is occasionally affable, though this is generally overshadowed by his wrathfulness, arrogance, hatefulness, and insanity, and that side of him disappears by the end of the game, making this minor.
Trivia[]
- He is the only Near Pure Evil in the Castlevania games who doesn't in any way fail the heinous standard or suffer from off screen villainy.
