~ Bowyer's first words in the game where he reveals his plans.

Bowyer is a major antagonist in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and its remake, Super Mario RPG, serving as the main antagonist of the second chapter and a posthumous antagonist for the rest of the game. He is a large bow-like robot creature who is part of the game's main antagonistic group, the Smithy Gang.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He terrorizes Rose Town by shooting his Aero minions at its Toad residents, freezing them in place and making them unable to move. This is not temporary either, as his victims are still frozen after a jump-skip between Mario getting knocked out and waking up again.
  • Given his rank in the Smithy gang, it’s likely he committed (and helped the others commit) other terrible crimes in the past.
  • He intended to attack even more villages, and organizes a thousand more minions to prepare for another invasion.
  • He expresses sadistic joy over his victims' fear.
  • He does not care for his Aero minions, as when one of them shows him a star piece, he angrily snaps at them.
  • He attempts to paralyze Geno, Mario and Mallow when they try to attack him.
  • Even though he admits he thinks highly of Geno’s strength, he specifies it to be why he means to kill him.
  • Upon realizing he is outnumbered in battle, he extends his best effort against them by periodically locking a command button of his choosing, and at the end, he locks all 3 buttons to prevent the heroes from attacking him.
    • In the remake, he also throws a fit when Mario and his team are about to use a Triple Move, only before realizing he has no allies to join forces with.
  • Although he works for Smithy, he never mentions him, which implies well enough that he is terrorizing cities entirely by his own will and not orders from his boss.
    • Also, even though it’s suggested that Smithy created most of his minions, Bowyer still shows a clear personality and prioritizes his own interests, hence ruling out any concern he might be made of Evil.
    • This note is also further supported by Claymorton, Speardovich, the Axem Rangers, Smithy himself, and all of his soldiers having clear personalities of their own.
  • Although his crimes are not on the same scale as King Boo, Princess Shroob, King K. Rool, Cackletta, Wizpig, or Terrormisu, Bowyer has nowhere near any of their power or resources.
  • Even though it’s only part of the effect and hints at how abusive Smithy is to his soldiers, Bowyer very much deserved the punishment of being hit over the head for his actions.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • The full extent of his terrorism is not explored in-depth and is arguably not treated as horribly as it could be. The narrative hardly acknowledges that his victims could be stuck in a fate worse than death, nor does anyone note that they could starve or become crippled by the effects, making these actions rely on Fridge Horror, although it does still have some weight as the Rose Town citizens are clearly terrified by Bowyer's deeds.
