Black Zetsu is the secondary antagonist of the Naruto anime and manga series. It is a monster created by Kaguya who set up so much of the events to happen in the series throughout many generations, causing wars between Kaguya's descendants.
For most of the series, he acted as an agent in the Akatsuki organization who would help in capturing the jinchuuriki. He acted as the right-hand to Obito Uchiha. When Madara was revived during the war, he acted his right-hand after betraying Obito until he betrayed Madara in order to revive Kaguya.
It was voiced by Nobuo Tobita and Kengo Kawanishi as a child in the anime in the Japanese version, and voiced by Travis Willingham and Todd Haberkorn as a child in the English version, who also voiced Bellion from The Seven Deadly Sins.

What Makes It Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- Black Zetsu corrupted Indra Ōtsutsuki when he was young, influencing him into believing that power was more important than bonds, making him colder and more distant while also creating a rift between Indra and his family to the point that Indra betrayed them, thereby also creating the conflict between the reincarnations of Indra and Asura, as well as the centuries-old feud between the Senju and Uchiha clans.
- Black Zetsu was the mastermind behind Madara and the Akatsuki. It forged the inscription of the tablet made by Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki so that it can find a pawn that can revive the Ten Tails and eventually Kaguya, which was Madara. He pretended to be Madara's will and creation in order to fool the Uchiha and make him into Kaguya's vessel when the Ten Tails was revived and the Infinite Tsukuyomi was implemented.
- It served for Kaguya's wrongdoing. It used its time to sow discord and take pleasure in influencing ninja history and acting prideful as the sole individual who has manipulated ninja history.
- Black Zetsu caused many conflicts and wars for many centuries, serving as the catalyst for most of the events of the story. It is also the reason Naruto became a child without his parents and drove Sasuke to the path of revenge.
- It assisted the Akatsuki in capturing the tailed beasts and extracting them from their host Jinchuuriki, killing most of the hosts. Its later revealed that Black Zetsu also used the Akatsuki as pawns in its grand scheme to revive the Ten-Tails.
- After Obito hijacked the Eye of the Moon Plan for himself and let Madara remain dead, Black Zetsu manipulated Kabuto into finding Madara's corpse so that Madara could be revived in the future.
- During the war, it took control of Obito's body to force him to revive Madara. As a result, Obito could not revive the tens of thousands of people who died in the war.
- It assisted Madara in his Eye of the Moon Plan and the Infinite Tsukuyomi. After Madara succeeded in trapping most of humanity in the Infinite Tsukuyomi, Black Zetsu betrayed him by impaling him through the back and forcing him to absorb all the chakra from the millions of people trapped in the Infinite Tsukuyomi in order to make him the vessel of Kaguya to revive her. The process causing immense pain to Madara before bringing back its mother in hopes of having her defeat Team 7.
- Black Zetsu mocks Madara for believing himself to be different than Obito in being able to take advantage of others while presuming he is the sole exception, calling him another pawn.
- It tried to help Kaguya in her goal to get most of humanity turned into White Zetsus knowing full well that everyone's personalities and identities will be drained through the process.
- As Obito is slowly killed, Black Zetsu mocks him over having no allies, being used and discarded and regarding him as a fool made up of only mistakes. Then, once Obito dies, he derides him as nothing but a pesky cockroach.
What Prevents It from Being Pure Evil?[]
- It cares for Kaguya. It shows concern for her when she is injured in her fight against Team 7. It even asks Naruto and Sasuke to sympathize with her.
