Bishop Mozgus is a major antagonist of Berserk, being the main antagonist of the Conviction Arc.
He is one of the Chief Inquisitors of the Holy See, who uses the idea of God and his beliefs as a way to excuse his and his disciples' acts of torture and murder against "heretics". He would eventually face Guts and commit actions which would lead to the rebirth of Femto in the Physical World.
In the 2016 anime adaptation and the video game adaptation Berserk Musou, he was voiced by Rikiya Koyama. He is voiced by Ray Chase in the Dubbed version of the 2016 anime adaptation.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- Even before his first appearance, he and his disciples had brutally tortured and murdered at least 500 people whom they viewed as heretics using visceral torture methods like the breaking wheel, impalement, stake burning, and water torture.
- Mozgus also takes sadistic glee in torturing people, and states that the breaking wheel is his favorite instrument of torture.
- It should also be noted that Mozgus had taught his disciples his ways since they were very young, so he is responsible for turning them into monsters as well.
- He and his disciples are sent by the Holy See to dismantle a recently established pagan cult. Along the way they brutally torture and murder many people.
- One such instance involved a village where Mozgus had all the villagers be burned to death, women and children included, while the men were working away from home, after accusing the town for being a refuge for heretics all because they suggested that they temporarily suspend their offerings to the church since their food stores had hit rock bottom from the famine.
- When a rebel group attacks Mozgus' carriage and some Holy Iron Chain Knights to avenge the families they burned to death in their village, Mozgus lets his disciples torture the rebels to death by the breaking wheel, even forcing Farnese to watch the carnage.
- He takes over the city of Albion, torturing hundreds of nobles and commoners alike, due to seeing them as heretics.
- While Farnese is able to briefly stop him from acting so cruel, he still refuses to think he is in the wrong.
- He did want to stop the Great Goat's pagan cult, which was committing horrific crimes like eating babies, but his attempts to do so were unnecessarily extreme and inept, as he mostly just tortured, mutilated, and killed anyone who he merely suspected of being involved with the Great Goat.
- After assuming Casca is the leader of the pagan cult, as well as a witch due to her Brand of Sacrifice, Mozgus puts her in an iron maiden to be tortured later on.
- This action starts the Incarnation Ceremony, an event which results in a massive amount of deaths and inhumane acts from numerous people. While Mozgus did not intend for this to happen, he feels no remorse for this, believing it to be an act of God.
- The Incarnation Ceremony results in Mozgus and his disciples becoming Pseudo-Apostles, and they proceed to cause even more havoc.
- When the dead start rising from beyond the grave, Mozgus assumes this to be Casca's doing, and attempts to burn her at the stake,
- He attempts to kill Guts for trying to interfere with his plans, which luckily fails and results in him being killed.
- Due to accidentally causing the Incarnation Ceremony, Mozgus is indirectly responsible for the rebirth of Femto and him triggering the Great Roar of the Astral World.
- While it could be argued Emperor Ganishka has done worse, Mozgus has way less resources and his torture count alone makes him easily stand out.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He cares about his fellow Holy See members, especially his disciples, raising them as his own children and taking them under his wing, and even though he did turn them into monsters by teaching them his ways, this doesn't change the fact that he truly loves them as his own. He even cries tears of blood after seeing them die and vows to avenge them.
- He's a genuine Well-Intentioned Extremist who wants to fulfill the wishes of God to the people as shown by his aforementioned Pet the Dog moments. This is minor, though, because most of the tortures are driven by his obvious sadistic bloodthirst.
