Benjamin David Merva, originally known as David James Merva, and called The Messiah or The Strangler, is the main antagonist of the Criminal Minds episodes “Believer” and “300”. He is a former member of Benjamin Cyrus’s cult, and the leader of his cult named “The Believers”. To avenge Cyrus, he ritualistically kills 299 people and targets Spencer Reid, who he blames for the cult's destruction.

What Makes Him Close To Being Pure Evil?[]
- Started The Believers cult after the separation sect was destroyed, initiating a series of kidnappings around the world so he could rip out their thyroid bone and strangle them to death. The goal of the cult is to murder 300 people, with Merva killing 299 people in this way. If you want to join the cult, you must burn off your fingerprints in acid.
- When Agent Owen Quinn linked seven of his murders together, Jerry and Donna Holston held him captive and tortured him for almost a year, starving and strangling him repeatably with a chain.
- On one day, the couple attempted to force their son, Theo, to kill Quinn or else they would murder his girlfriend.
- Broke out of prison by having Mary Meadows abduct Penelope Garcia and Spencer Reid so he could kill them for causing Benjamin Cyrus’s death.
- After being deemed “not worthy”, Merva orders the cult to shoot Theo dead.
- Under threats of violence, the cult forces Garcia to hide the weapons the cult has.
- Binds Reid to a chair with his arms tied, and when SWAT comes, they ambush the group, leading him to try and kill Reid, which ends up in his death.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Evil?[]
- He appears to be genuinely Loyal to Cyrus as every key factor dealing with the cult, even killing 300 people, is to fulfill the religious grandeur that Cyrus used in his group. Merva also specifically leaves Reid to be his last victim as he was key to the destruction of the Separatarian Sect.
