Benoit, also known as simply Ben, is the villainous protagonist of Man Bites Dog. He is a charismatic serial killer and snuff filmer, who spends the entire duration of the film, brutally murdering people for the documentary being filmed on him. Quite often even detailing to the camera crew how he gets away with these acts.
He was played by Benoît Poelvoorde.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- Even though he appears nice to some of the random people he meets throughout the film, this is most certainly just him putting up a friendly facade so they don’t suspect him of being a serial killer.
- At the start of the movie, he kills a woman by strangling her with a wire, for absolutely no reason.
- It then cuts to him talking to the camera, detailing how to successfully dumb a body in the ocean, while dumping this woman’s body.
- He then beats a postman to death and steals his clothes.
- A montage then plays, where we see Ben kill eleven people, ten by gunshot, and one by suffocation.
- We also see him throwing a body into what appears to be a lake off a cliff.
- During his conversation about a woman he used to be with, we see him throwing yet another body into a lake.
- It’s mentioned how when a man was once rude to Jenny, he found this man and murdered him.
- He shoots the night watchman at a construction site, simply for doing his job.
- He also humiliates this man, by pulling down his pants to show off his genitals, asking if “the rumours are true” because of the man’s race.
- We then see him applying cement to where he hid the body of someone he killed.
- Even though he calls the construction site using cement that doesn’t last long a “dirty trick”, this is only because doing this makes it harder for him to get away with murder
- He mentions how he once buried two arabic people in a wall on the construction site.
- He tricks an old woman into letting him into her house, only to scare her so she has a heart attack and dies, so he can steal her stuff.
- He jumps into a random Taxi and holds the driver hostage, forcing him to drive after someone, while shooting at other cars.
- We then see him shoot the driver in the head, killing him.
- After a man murders one of the crew, he bludgeons him to death with his own gun.
- He breaks into a families house and kills all of them, bludgeoning the woman leaving her to convulse on the floor, repeatedly hitting the man’s head over a sink and then snapping his neck and then smothering the child with a blanket.
- After killing the child, he states this is the second or third child he’s killed in five years.
- When the nightingale kills one of the crew on his movie, Ben kills him and the crew of people that were recording him.
- We see a brief montage where he kills a man by repeatedly shooting him in the back, kills a woman by strangling her with a wire and then can be seen dragging away the body of someone he killed.
- He sexually harasses Malou by demanding she show her breasts to the camera.
- While drunk, he breaks into a woman’s house, gang rapes her alongside his film crew, and forces her boyfriend to watch, he then ends up disembowelling her and murdering her boyfriend.
- At his birthday party, he accidentally kills one of his friends by shooting him in the head, and shows absolutely no remorse for it.
- He attempts to kill a postman, but he ends up getting away before he’s able to kill him.
- His actions inadvertently lead to his family, Valerie, his crew and himself being killed by the Nightingale’s vengeful brother.
- Despite the film making it clear he used to have a wife, his relationship with her is too vague to count as a prevention.
- Even though he has some comical moments, they don’t really detract from his heinousness, and arguably make him more heinous, and go to showcase how he can just casually murder people, without even really thinking about it.
- Even the scene where he’s drunk isn’t really comedy, as it ends with him raping a woman.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He genuinely cares about his family, Jenny and Valerie, and was very upset and angry when he found out his family and Valerie were killed.
- Despite not really caring when the crew of the movie are killed by other serial killers, he is genuinely affable towards Rémy, the director of the movie, as he seems to be the only crew member Ben genuinely likes.
