Bellatrix "Bella" Lestrange (née Black) is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Peter Pettigrew) of the Harry Potter series.
She is a Death Eater who is fanatically loyal to Lord Voldemort, thus making her his most dangerous and psychotic follower to date.
In the film series, she is portrayed by Helena Bonham Carter, who also played Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd:The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
Her Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
In General/Background[]
- She shares in Lord Voldemort's nihilistic beliefs of romanticizing terror and bloodshed, and due to being raised into this, she also believes in pure-blood superiority and hence hates anyone she perceives as lesser than her, which led to her turning against her sister Andromeda for marrying a Muggle-born wizard.
- While Harry Potter has a pretty high heinous standard, she managed to stand out for being a more personal villain due to her leading the torture on Frank and Alice Longbottom, and being responsible for the deaths of Sirius, Dobby, Tonks, and Fred Weasley. She also commits all of her crimes out of her own freewill, despite her loyalty to Voldermort.
- Despite being clearly insane, she has enough moral agency to know what is right and wrong, as most of her actions are done out of her sadistic tendencies.
- She became one of Voldemort's most loyal and ruthless Death Eaters, fighting viciously against the Order of the Phoenix throughout the First Wizarding War and causing unethical deaths on the battlefield.
- Following the events of Godric's Hollow, Bellatrix led her husband Rodolphus, his brother Rabastan, and Barty Crouch Jr. in torturing Frank and Alice Longbottom with the Cruciatus Curse for information about Voldemort's location, driving them to the point of insanity, breaking their minds and leaving them permanently catatonic.
- Despite this crime being offscreen, it is given onscreen weight as Neville Longbottom is left distraught at what happened to his parents and both Frank and Alice are shown in St. Mungo's to forever be left catatonic.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix[]
- After her escape from Azkaban, she joins back up with the Death Eaters to continue their evil work.
- She attacks Harry and his friends in the Department of Mysteries, taunting Neville about what she did to his parents.
- She takes Neville prisoner and threatens to kill him.and
- She murders her own cousin, Sirius Black, in front of Harry Potter, sadisti cally taunting him about it. In the film, she even mocks him by pretending to whimper apprehensively just to piss Harry off further still.
- In the film, she cowardly deserts Voldemort instead of helping him team up against Albus Dumbledore.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince[]
Both Versions[]
- She convinces Snape to make the Unbreakable Vow, a life-staking mystical pact, to force him to help Draco become a better Death Eater.
Film Only[]
- She attacks the Weasley's house with Fenrir Greyback, continuing to taunt Harry about how she murdered Sirius Black. Then she and Fenrir destroy the Weasley's house.
- She furiously and repetitively goads Draco to use the Killing Curse on Albus Dumbledore, ranting about how this is "his moment", and glares at Severus Snape when he steps in.
- After Dumbledore's death, she casts the Dark Mark above Hogwarts and trashes the Great Hall.
- She destroys Hagrid's hut, putting his dog Fang in mortal danger in the process.
- She zaps Harry as she laughs maniacally and only backs off when Snape claims he belongs to Voldemort.
- While she does have a lot of comedic moments, none of those detract from her actions and they just show how insane she is.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows[]
- She volunteers herself to hunt down Harry due to hating him for the threat he poses to Voldemort (film only).
- She imprisons Harry, Hermione, and Ron at Malfoy Manor, where she brutally tortures Hermione for information about the sword from Godric Gryffindor, after thinking it was stolen. In the books, she uses the Cruciatus Curse to torture Hermione, while in the film, she carves Mudblood into her arm. In her anger over how the trio got the sword, she slipped up about a certain artifact Lord Voldemort entrusted to her in Gringgots and feared the trio stole it as well, much to Hermione's suspicion that she correctly deduced the artifact — later confirmed to be Hufflepuff's Cup — to be the next of the Dark Lord's Horcruxes to be destroyed and took her ordeal as the opportunity to steal a piece of Bellatrix's hair in a bid to impersonate her later on.
- When Dobby arrives and rescues Harry, Hermione, Ron, Luna Lovegood, and Garrick Ollivander, Bellatrix murders Dobby with her knife.
- During the Battle of Hogwarts, she murders her own niece, Nymphadora Tonks. She is thus responsible for Nymphadora and Remus Lupin's son, Teddy Lupin, being orphaned.
- She attempts to murder Ginny Weasley and when confronted by Molly Weasley, Bellatrix taunts the latter and attempts to kill her. In the books, she mocks Molly over the death of her son, Fred.
What Prevents Her From Being Pure Evil?[]
- She is genuinely loyal to Lord Voldemort and cares for her master. Even after she was sentenced to Azkaban, she voiced her loyalty to Voldemort and she stayed loyal to him for all of her years in prison. When she was released, she immediately went back to continuing to serve him. She also has twisted, but genuine, romantic feelings for him, even siring a child with him, and she once blushed deeply when she mistakenly thought he was praising her concerning his prolonged stay at Malfoy Manor. And when Voldemort falls over after using the Killing Curse on Harry, Bellatrix quickly rushes over to help him up whilst tenderly asking him if he is hurt.
- She seemed to have some care for her sister Narcissa Malfoy and her nephew Draco, due to bringing Narcissa to Severus Snape so that Snape could help Draco to become a better Death Eater behind Voldemort's back, despite him wanting to send Draco on a suicide mission out of spite. Bellatrix never thought to rat out Narcissa for going behind Voldemort's back. Although she becomes oppressive towards her family during the battle at Malfoy Manor, this behavior stemmed from the intense pressure of the situation rather than a desire to control them.
Trivia[]
- She was originally considered Pure Evil as it was believed her love for Voldemort was just an unhealthy obsession, before it was decided that her love for Voldemort, as well as her care for Narcissa and Draco, were genuine.
