His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- He's one of Voldemort's most devoted followers.
- He sought to restore Voldemort to power after his fall and took part in torturing Neville's parents into insanity.
- While he at first looks sympathetic when he begs for mercy at his trial, it's later revealed that this was an act, as he really was guilty and had no remorse for his crime.
- He showed no gratitude for his mother sacrificing herself to save him from prison, but only thought of rejoining Voldemort.
- He betrayed Winky's trust after she vouched for him, stealing Harry's wand at the Quidditch World Cup and casting the Dark Mark into the sky to incite panic. This resulted in Winky's dismissal.
- He eagerly agreed to help Voldemort back to power, attacking and subduing Moody in order to impersonate him. He kept Moody locked in his own trunk for nine months in order to interrogate him.
- He poses as a mentor to Harry while guiding him through the Triwizard Tournament in order to send him into Voldemort's hands.
- While he is a genuinely good teacher, this is only so he stays in character as Moody, so it's not genuine kindness.
- He took pleasure in demonstrating the Cruciatus Curse in front of Neville, showing he had no remorse for what he did to his parents. He pretends to comfort Neville later in order to use him as a pawn in his plan.
- He placed Harry's name in the Goblet of Fire, forcing him to compete in the tournament even though he was underage.
- He manipulates several people, including Neville, Cedric, and Dobby, as part of his plan, later boasting that decent people are easy to manipulate.
- He murders his own father to silence him, Transfiguring his body into a bone before burying him.
- He attacks the other champions in the third task, stunning Fleur and putting Krum under the Imperius Curse to make him torture Cedric.
- He turned the Triwizard cup into a Portkey, which transports Harry to Voldemort.
- As a result of his plan, he is responsible for Voldemort's return to power and Cedric Diggory's murder.
- He gloatingly reveals his treachery to Harry and tries to kill him.
- He has a sadistic hatred for any Death Eaters who renounced Voldemort, saying he hopes Voldemort tortured them.
- When captured, he shows no remorse for his crimes and proudly boasts of what he did.
- While he's only in one book, he still stands out as one of Voldemort's most dangerous supporters. Even Dumbledore finds him disgusting, and agrees with Fudge that Crouch getting the Dementor's Kiss is "no loss" and is only upset that it prevents him from testifying about Voldemort's return.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He has a tragic backstory of being neglected by his father, leading him to join the Death Eaters.
- He is genuinely loyal to Voldemort, seeming to view him as a father figure, and is disgusted with other Death Eaters for their lack of loyalty.
- His fate of getting the Dementor's Kiss (a fate worse than death), while arguably well-deserved, is treated with some slight sympathy by the narrative, as Harry is disturbed when he hears about it.
Trivia[]
- Only Barty Crouch Jr.'s book incarnation qualifies as Near Pure Evil, as his film incarnation qualifies as Pure Evil instead due to having no redeeming qualities and being much more evil and callous than his book counterpart.
- He was initially considered Inconsistently Heinous as it was thought he was too tragic and his fate made him a scapegoat. However, he was reevaluated and approved on this wiki when it was shown that his tragedy wasn't too mitigating and that his fate, though treated with slight sympathy, didn't really make him a scapegoat.
