You're too late, O'Connell. l have released the Army of Anubis. Lord Imhotep will defeat the Scorpion King and take command!
~ Baltus Hafez to O'Connell in the pyramid.

Professor Baltus Hafez is a major antagonist in the 2001 fantasy action-adventure film The Mummy Returns, the second installment of Stephen Sommers' The Mummy film trilogy.

He was a curator at the British Museum of Antiques in London that become evil and lead an Egyptian cult known as the Cult of Imhotep that worships the accursed mummy Imhotep. Once Imhotep comes back to life, Hafez does everything at his disposal to assist him in his and Anck-Su-Namun's plans to find Mathayus III to take over the Army of anubis.

He was portrayed by Alun Armstrong.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • After hearing of the power given when The Scorpion King is killed, he creates a cult dedicated to Imhotep, believing Imhotep was the only one who could possibly slay him (unaware that Rick O’Connell could do the same).
  • He leads a dig with Meela Nais, a reincarnate of Anck-Su-Namun in the remains of Hamunaptura to Dig up Imhotep, finding the Book of the Dead & the Book of Amun Ra.
  • He hires 3 thieves to steal the Scorpion king Bracelet, but the O’Connells get to it first.
  • He shows complete apathy when the Scarabs begin massacring and devouring the workers and his own cult members within one hole.
  • He goes to London after hearing where the Bracelet is.
  • He breaks into the O’Connells' Mansion where he interrogates Rick’s brother-in-law Jonathan Carnahan who Hafez thinks is Rick himself even having Meela try to kill him with her snake.
  • He kidnaps Rick’s wife Evelyn.
  • He resurrects Imhotep in the British museum, also indirectly resurrects other mummies inside the museum.
  • When Imhotep orders Evelyns death and Evie herself says that she will put him back in the grave, Hafez remarks “not before he’ll put her in hers first”.
  • He runs away from the fire fight between the O’Connells, Ardeth Bay & the cult.
  • He has his right hand Lock-nah kidnap Rick & Evie’s son Alex.
  • While in Egypt, he steals a train.
  • He dismisses the three thieves' superstitions of the curse of the chest they stole saying it’s a fairy tale knowing that it is all true.
  • He travels across Egypt with Imhotep the new resurrected Anck-Su-Namun, Alex and the rest of the cult.
  • Upon reaching the Pyramid he orders Lock Nah to retrieve the bracelet from Alex which at the same time is ordering his death.
  • When ambushed by Pygmy Mummies he orders his two remaining henchmen to sacrifice themselves to save him, justifying it saying they will be rewarded in heaven, showing himself to be a coward.
  • He uses the bracelet to awaken the Anubis Army so all the Medjai killed in their battle are tied to him.
  • While the bracelet literally gets eaten off him alongside his arm down to the bone by the pygmies is horrific it isn’t played for sympathy at all.
  • When found by the newly resurrected Scorpion king and caught by him, he cowardly begs Imhotep to save him but Imhotep refuses, then Hafez is literally ripped apart by the Scorpion King.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He is genuinely loyal to Imhotep, doing anything he orders.
  • He fails the heinous standards to Imhotep and the Scorpion King both who did worse.
