King Balon Greyjoy IX is one of the secondary antagonists of the HBO series Game of Thrones, an adaptation of George R.R Martin's fantasy novels A Song of Ice and Fire.
He is the ruler of the Iron Islands as well as its twice-crowned monarch. Theon Greyjoy's father who rebelled against Robert Baratheon before the series which led to his son being sent to Winterfell to be a hostage to Ned Stark. Years later, Theon was sent by the Starks to obtain Greyjoy support in their conflict against the Lannisters and ended up betraying them to win Balon's approval.
He was portrayed by Patrick Malahide.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- His daughter Yara implies when talking to Theon that Balon abused both of them as children.
- Started the Greyjoy rebellion to free the Ironborn from Robert's "oppressive rule" (which was really just not letting them raid and plunder whoever they wanted) and took no responsibility when his two sons Rodrik and Maron died because of it, blaming it all on the Starks.
- Had his men raid innocent fishing villages.
- Treated Theon like dirt when he came home, insulting him for not killing a man for his clothes, berating him for his attachment to the Starks and physically striking him across the face when Theon accurately tells him all the stuff he resents him for is his own doing.
- Pettily rejected a proposal of alliance from Robb Stark and plotted to attack the North as he arrogantly believed that he could take on the Starks by himself, proving that he learned absolutely nothing from the Greyjoy Rebellion.
- His mistreatment of Theon inspired the latter to attack Winterfell which resulted in two innocent children being murdered, Bran and Rickon Stark being forced from their homes and the death of the kindly Maester Luwin. Indirectly, he prepares the ground for the Red Wedding, in which the Northern Army falls.
- When he receives a letter from Ramsay Bolton demanding he cease his pillaging of the North or Theon will suffer further torture, Balon doesn't care since Theon is useless to him now he has been castrated and can't further the Greyjoy line, even insulting his manhood.
- After Yara's attempt to save Theon failed, Balon was annoyed by the loss of useful men, not caring that she was trying to save his son.
- When Deepwood Motte, the last castle the Ironborn held in the North, fell, Balon refused to give up despite Yara's pragmatic advice.
- Despite seeming to treat Yara better than Theon he doesn't hesitate to threaten to disinherit her if she fails to obey his orders.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He fails the heinous standards of the series to others, especially his brother Euron Greyjoy even though the two of them have similar resources since they are both Kings of the Iron Islands.
- He incorrectly laments how Eddard Stark killed his two sons, Rodrik and Maron (they weren't killed by the Starks at all), but it shows that he cares about them.
- He is disgusted about the rumors on Euron cutting the tongues of his sailors.
