They say ignorance is bliss... all I am doing is trying to prevent you from killing each other again... just sacrificing a couple hundred to save thousands... only I understand... that's why I have to make sure I am the one in charge. It's too late now... I've gathered enough magic to wipe out this entire city... and once I am done here... I'll make sure the entire world fears me. First, I will get rid of all the monsters on the surface... and without them, these useless humans will have no choice but to vow to my will... why are you even trying to stop me anymore? Your efforts will be in vain... you fail to realize, that for me... this is just the beginning... but for you... It's Game Over.
~ Bête Noire

Bête Noire is the central antagonist of the YouTube animated series Glitchtale, serving as the main antagonist of Season 2.

She is the evil incarnation of FEAR and she seeks on wiping out all monsters on the surface in order to rule over the humans. She is responsible for many deaths, even some of the main characters.

She is voiced by Courtney (ProjectSNT).

History[]

This section is too long. Visit here for more details: Agate Lightvale’s Early Life (+ Bête Noire’s Early Life)

Her Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

Agate Lightvale (Pre-Spell)[]

  • It’s implied Bête is highly connected to Agate Lightvale, the wizard who created her. This is due to the fact they both share the same exact SOUL, which extends to sharing the same exact consciousness. Prior to creating Bête, Agate inverted her Bravery trait to Fear in order to become more powerful so she could try to defeat her twin brother (Copper), in which she killed her younger sister (Amber), who tried to escape, to make her brother lose his Determination at the sight of his younger sister’s death. After Agate killed her brother to claim her victory and her realization that she was slowly dying, she casted a dangerous spell with her own SOUL and created a powerful entity, a Bête Noire, with her sister’s body as a vessel.

The Bête Noire (Post-Spell)[]

  • In Dust, it was revealed that she had been manipulating everyone in the series the entire time, since it turned out that she tricked Frisk into "saving" her from being hit by a car and was orchestrating the events when the humans and monsters tried to make peace.
  • She took Sans' SOUL while attempting to grab Asriel's, leaving Sans dead in some way for a bit and used his SOUL for its magic. Eventually, she would revive Sans using HATE, making him nearly kill his friends and allies.
  • After Jessica refused to give her the HATE vial, Bête forcefully took it by transforming into Jessica's late daughter, Alina, and then turning into her mutilated corpse, tormenting her, and then took the vial.
  • She seemingly takes advantage of people's fears, as seen several times throughout the series.
  • She was responsible for hundreds, if not, thousands of deaths, killing many humans and monsters for their SOULs, showing no remorse for what she did at all. Some of her victims were even children, yet she didn't show remorse for her actions.
  • She seemingly damaged Gaster's SOUL temporarily, but it did destroy his ability to teleport. Even after their battle, she seemed to have affected him mentally.
  • After taking Alphys' SOUL, she tricks Undyne into shattering it, killing her almost instantly.
  • After her battle with Frisk, she is seen shattering several people's SOULs in rage, and almost did the same with Asriel until she decided to use him.
  • She turned Asriel into a cruel, careless, and emotionless monster by using HATE to revive him, using him attack his own family and friends, even stabbing his own father one time and in the now erased timeline, killed his adopted brother, Chara.
  • In Game Over, it was revealed that Bête planned on wiping out all monsters on the surface, in order to finally take over. While she may not have been successful, she most likely still killed a lot of monsters.
  • She successfully tricked Toriel into attacking Asgore, fatally wounding him. After doing this, Bête taunted Toriel by asking if she really hated Asgore that much and made her hallucinate Asgore trying to kill her.
  • She nearly crushed Papyrus to death during her fight with Gaster and Sans.
  • She was indirectly responsible for Sans' second death, making him go over his limit in trying to kill her, which lead to him using all of his Determination and turning to dust. After doing this, she was ready to kill both Gaster and Papyrus, but failed after Gaster brutally killed her out of rage for killing his son twice.
  • While her death by the hands of Gaster was horrendously brutal, it was deserved given everything she did and strived to do. Not to mention there was no other way of stopping her.
  • Despite claiming that she wants to save humanity, she shows no qualms in killing humans alongside the monsters, making her a hypocrite.

What Prevents Her from Being Pure Evil?[]

Agate Lightvale (Pre-Spell)[]

  • Prior to inverting her trait to become more powerful, Agate was a compassionate and selfless young woman who deeply valued her family and often took on a motherly role around Amber. She was also known for her strong drive to push beyond her limits, always eager to take on challenges if it meant she could improve. While Agate believed the barrier should remain in place, this wasn’t due to any hatred of monsters. Rather, she felt that humans and monsters coexisting could lead to more conflicts, and her goal was simply to maintain peace. Agate became more aggressive and twisted after she inverted her trait (possibly inducing some type of mental instability since she was acting much differently, such as laughing manically and being so desperate to win that she killed Amber) and used a spell to pass on (or even reincarnate) her consciousness and will into another physical body/entity, which the same mental instability is also passed on, as well as a twisted, hegemonic version of her original ideals of monsters and humans.

The Bête Noire (Post-Spell)[]

  • Even though it is a part of her and the two are technically the same entity, Bête does seem to genuinely care for Akumu and vice versa. Though, this may just be false hope due to the two needing each other to survive.
  • Bête and HATE have different plans, with HATE’s plan is to exterminate all of everything entirely, in which slightly differs to Bêtes. Bête rejects these plans and is actually quite disturbed by them, meaning she does have slight standards. She is also shown to be genuinely afraid of HATE corrupting her, and only allows it to take control completely after her death.

Trivia[]

  • Bête Noire is the only Glitchtale villain to be considered to be Near Pure Evil.
