''You need to get off your high horse. You waited until the last minute to do anything, Luther. You watched her die. YOU buried her body in the lake. YOU told them all not to say a word. Even Lily. Even after she took Sarah's last name. Even after she adopted a son in hopes of moving on. You didn't even let Sarah know she killed her own son. So tell me this, Mr. Artwright. How do you think she feels?''
~ Atem chastises Luther.
''It doesn't have to be... You can still control it all... It's yours for taking... It's always been yours for taking.''
~ Atem's last desperate bid to corrupt Sarah and prevent her from redeeming herself.

Atem is the overarching antagonist of the analog horror web series Needlem0use, serving as the overarching antagonist of Season 1 and the main antagonist of Season 2.

It is a demonic entity that resembles a red, skeletal version of Sonic the Hedgehog created from the raw anger and hatred of Sarah Henderson. Due to motivating Sarah to carry out her revenge against her ex-friends and manipulating her into doing so through means of murder, it is directly responsible for most of her actions. It is the arch-nemesis of its positive counterpart, Del.

He is voiced by ShutUpJoJo.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • After Sarah begins to regain her morals briefly, and when she mentions during the time that she cannot continue, Atem appears and says that she can, and then proceeds to manipulate her emotions by saying that Luther is trying to take her happiness away from her, and then suggests that Sarah should go and kill Thomas Bentley Artwright whilst Atem stalls Luther and keeps him busy.
  • He psychologically torments Luther, telling him that he was the one who came up with the idea to bury her body in the lake, and told everyone, Lily included, not to say a word, which practically led to her villainy and insanity, which then led to all the bad stuff that happened in the series (most especially the gruesome death of Kyle, who was her own adopted son). To finish it off, Atem asks one question to Luther; asking how she think she feels. Needless to say, this all sends Luther into a Despair Event Horizon, which he thankfully snaps out of after both Kyle and Del help him move on to the afterlife.
  • Sarah begins to have even more second thoughts on killing Kyle again. Atem then delivers this gem whilst trying to corrupt her.
  • Atem just gives up and begrudgingly decides to let Sarah leave, since he could always find someone else to manipulate and use as a pawn. He's still in the game, however. Just waiting on another victim to corrupt.
  • While Sarah Henderson is the one doing the killing, Atem himself is the one using her mental state in order to claim more victims.
    • Due to Atem being Sarah's hatred embodied, he serves as her driving force and motivator throughout the entire series.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Atem is the embodiment of Sarah's hatred, hence he has moral agency issues. As the embodiment of Sarah's hatred, coupled with the fact that he has a positive counterpart, he is simply incapable of understanding/doing good and only exists to be an evil, soul-collecting monster.
    • Despite this, however, it isn't that strong, given that he still has a personality in the form of a sadistic tormentor, plus how absolutely infuriated he gets once Sarah starts to redeem herself and ultimately abandons the game in favor of going to the afterlife to be with her adopted son and ex-friends.
