Sitting there in the dark, I had the chance to think about a lot of things, including the nature of the world itself. And after lengthy consideration, I realized something: when all is said and done, this world is an unknowable place. On the surface, all appears rational, orderly. But what lies beyond that thin veneer of reason? Stability and reality? Or chaos and madness? What are we really made of in the end? Is there truly any meaning to the lives we lead? Or are we nothing more than hollow vessels? These are questions we can never answer because we cannot hope to see beyond the world's fragile layer of skin. So we live our lives filled with uncertainty, never knowing who or what we truly are or what the future will bring. All we can do is imagine. Life becomes an unsolvable mystery with any number of twists and turns awaiting us. And that's enough to fill any soul with terror!
~ Asura

Asura is the main antagonist of the anime and manga series Soul Eater. He was a former member of Lord Death and his eight guardians, but he was a rather fearful man until one day, his fear got the better of him and turned his back on Lord Death and his guardians.

He was voiced by Toshio Furukawa (who also voiced Hantengu from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) in the Japanese version and Chris Patton (who also voiced Turles from Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might) in the English dubbed version.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

Both Versions[]

  • In general, he's a cataclysmic monster who has no remorse for any of the harm he's caused to others or destruction he caused to the world.
  • Before the events of the anime and manga, due to being extremely paranoid and fearful, he betrayed Lord Death and the guardians and teamed up with Vajra.
  • He fed his former partner Vajra innocent souls, and he would later betray and eat Vajra in his weapon form to gain the ability to consume innocent souls himself.
    • As a result of eating many innocent souls, he became the first ever kishin in history and would use his Madness Wavelength to make people hallucinate and drive them to insanity like him and almost destroy the world.
  • Once he is revived, he uses his Madness Wavelength once again to start plunging the world into insanity, resulting in a domino effect of Arachne and her group Arachnophobia coming back with a vengeance for Lord Death and the DWMA, as his madness wavelength directly reawakened Arachne after many years of laying dormant in a golem.
  • He attempts to bring an end to the world a second time after he is revived.
  • Almost kills Maka, Soul and the rest of their team in a very deadly battle.

Anime[]

  • He teams up with Arachne so he can get help in defeating Lord Death, as well as continue Asura's reign of insanity over the world with the help of Arachne spreading his madness with the moral manipulation machine.
  • He kills three Arachnophobia members on the way to his room to eat their souls as a snack.
  • He attempts to kill Death the Kid (his own brother) and Azusa Yumi before Lord Death gets in front of them to take the blow for them.
  • He explains how Death failed because of how his love for others got the better of him, which reminds him of how he fell for Arachne, and out of fear that his love for Arachne will lead to his own demise, he goes over to her and takes Arachne's soul and consumes it, turning him into his kishin form.

Manga[]

  • He allowed Crona to absorb him only to then to take back power and absorbs Crona's body right back, believing that they weren't worthy of using his power, having only "teamed up" with Crona for pragmatic reasons.
  • He attempts to kill his own brother, Death the Kid, in a battle that in his mind, would determine who is the true shinigami.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

In General[]

  • He appears to have a couple of comedic moments, as well as also being proven to have a weird sense of humor, although this is a rather minor prevention since they don't detract him from his villainy enough.
  • The fact that Maka’s anti-magic attack, Kishin Hunter, had minimal effect on Asura means that he is not considered to be traditionally evil by the Soul Eater universe, as he is the embodiment of madness, which isn’t inherently evil, being an emotion inside everyone on earth.
  • He, to some extent, is not entirely there mentally. While it’s not entirely clear exactly how far it goes, as he typically is coherent and speaks rationally, he is clearly not normal either (being the embodiment of madness), and is likely insane or close to insane with an extremely paranoid and disturbed mind controlled almost entirely by anxiety and fear.
    • He was created by Death using Death’s fears, which means that his incredible anxiety and paranoia that drove him to madness was likely out of his control to some extent.
    • He also may struggle from developmental issues, as shown by how maternal his relationship with Arachne Gorgon is.

Anime[]

  • It is implied that he genuinely loved Arachne Gorgon before killing her as when he gloats to Lord Death about how his love for his son, Death the Kid, was the result of his downfall in their battle, his mind flashes a vision of Arachne which reminds him that the same could very well apply to him with his love for Arachne. The reason he kills Arachne is so he can eliminate that potential weakness and so he could consume her soul and turn into his kishin form.

Trivia[]

  • Asura is the only Soul Eater character that is Near Pure Evil.
  • Many of Asura's preventions come from the anime more than the manga, since the anime deviated from the manga's story, his version of the manga does not have many preventions in comparison.
